TAR HEELS WIN!

May. 31, 2014 @ 09:08 PM

After Friday’s loss to Long Beach State, North Carolina third baseman Logan Lassiter vowed the Tar Heels would play their best game of the season on Saturday.

Through an injury to its best hitter and a more than three-hour weather delay, No. 3 seed North Carolina delivered on Lassiter’s promise. The Tar Heels stunned No. 2 national seed Florida with a 5-2 win, knocking the host Gators out of the Gainesville Regional.

Florida had been stunned 3-2 by underdog College of Charleston Friday night.

“All year, when we’ve had our backs against the wall, we’ve come out and played pretty well,” North Carolina right fielder Tyler Ramirez said. “I think that’s what happened today. Everybody was really locked in from the get-go, ready to go.”

North Carolina (35-26) broke the game open, scoring five runs in the third shortly after a three-hour, 19-minute rain delay. The Tar Heels strung together four straight hits against Florida reliever Kirby Snead. Former Jordan High School star Alex Raburn began the damage with an RBI single, then Ramirez followed with a two-run double over the head of Florida center fielder Harrison Bader to extend UNC’s lead to 3-0.

Adam Pate added another RBI double, then catcher Korey Dunbar followed with an RBI single to put UNC up 5-0.

“It’s kind of the tale of two games, yesterday (against Long Beach State) we had it done to us and then we were able to do it today,” Fox said. “I can’t say enough about Adam Pate. He’s a freshman who hasn’t played a lot for us and he hit four balls right on the screws for us today.”

From there, North Carolina relief pitcher Reilly Hovis (9-1) protected the lead, allowing two runs over four innings to earn the win.

“He did exactly what we hoped he would do, which was get us late into the game,” North Carolina coach Mike Fox said.

Spencer Trayner closed out the game for UNC with two scoreless innings.

Before the weather delay, North Carolina endured a scare when leadoff hitter and shortstop Michael Russell was hit in the head with a pitch in the bottom of the second. After taking an 80-plus mile per hour fastball from Florida starter Bobby Poyner off his helmet, Russell was able to get up under his own power, but suffered a bloody gash to the side of his head

Under NCAA rules, North Carolina had 10 minutes to try to get Russell stitched up and back in the game because it was a blood-related injury. The game was delayed for more than 15 minutes before Russell was replaced by Zach Daly. Russell also underwent a concussion test in the dugout, which North Carolina said he passed.

Fox said Russell wanted to go back into the game and said hopeful he will be available today.

“Under the circumstances everyone was trying to do the right thing and give him as much time as possible, maybe get him back in the game” Fox said. “It just didn’t work out. It was good that everyone was on the same page in trying to do the right thing.

“Anytime you get a cut to the face, there’s a lot of blood. He’s a tough kid. I don’t know if it was the ball or the helmet that actually got him. But he’ll be fine.”

Defensively, North Carolina was forced to move Raburn from first to shortstop and left fielder Parks Jordan to first base. Daly went to left field. Raburn came up with a big defensive play in the seventh inning, cutting down Florida shortstop Richie Martin at home with a throw after he stumbled coming around third base.

“We had some guys step up today, which you have to in order to advance,” Fox said.

North Carolina will face the loser of Saturday night’s late game between Gaineville Regional No. 2 seed Long Beach State and No. 4 seed College of Charleston at 1 p.m. today. Fox said that righty Zac Gallen will start for the Tar Heels.

NOTES — If the Tar Heels win the 1 p.m. game, they would have to play again at 7 tonight against the winner of Saturday night’s game. The tournament is double-elimination, so the loser of today's 1 p.m. game will be eliminated from the tournament. The Tar Heels have to win two games today to remain alive in the tournament. If they do, they will play a regional title game against tonight's 7 p.m. game loser on Monday.
