Lady Eagle seniors celebrate 'their' day with big win

N.C. Central feasted on S.C. State 60-43 at McDougald-McLendon Gymnasium on Saturday. The Lady Eagles ate red-velvet cake after it was over. They were celebrating senior day. It was pretty sweet.

“It feels amazing that we were able to step it up,” NCCU senior forward Tiffany Gary said.

Those game-high 28 points from NCCU redshirt-senior guard Jessica Freeman were a season-high for her.

“That’s Jess. She was doing her thing out there on the court,” Gary said.

Gary and Freeman, NCCU’s lone seniors, got help from junior forward Racquel “Rocky” Davis, who had 12 points and 14 rebounds.

“Rocky did her thing. She was in her beast mode,” Gary said. “Everybody played their role. Every time somebody got subbed in, they just put it up a notch.”

Gary and Freeman will play their final home game Monday against Savannah State (4 p.m., NCCUEaglePride.com).

Freeman said an NCCU win against Savannah State and another one on Thursday at Norfolk State would be just the momentum the Lady Eagles need heading into the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament, which runs Mar. 10-15 at Norfolk (Va.) Scope Arena.

“Honestly, I think that’s where it starts,” Freeman said. “We come in with wins under our belts — these three wins (would be) big for us. We come in with that, that’s going to bring confidence. That can bring us confidence that we can really play with these teams and that we can actually beat these teams and come out with the win in the tournament. We can make history.”

NCCU (10-17, 5-9 MEAC) has struggled since transitioning to Division I, rejoining the MEAC in 2011.

A year ago, NCCU was 2-28.
