Tuesday's Duke football news and notes
A few notes from Duke coach David Cutcliffe’s Tuesday press conference.
Duke’s initial depth chart for the regular season lists the following starters for Saturday's N.C. Central game:
QB Anthony Boone
RB Juwan Thompson OR Jela Duncan
WR Max McCaffrey OR Brandon Braxton
WR Jamison Crowder
WR Issac Blakeney
TE Braxton Deaver
LT Takoby Cofield
LG Dave Harding
C Matt Skura
RG Laken Tomlinson
RT Perry Simmons
DE Justin Foxx
NG Jamal Bruce
DT Sydney Sarmiento
DE Kenny Anunike
MLB Kelby Brown
WLB C.J. France
CB Ross Cockrell
CB Garett Patterson
S (Bandit) Dwayne Norman
S (Rover) Corbin McCarthy
S (Striker) Jeremy Cash
-- Justin Foxx in the starting lineup is big for Duke. During the first week of practice earlier this month, there was doubt he’d play at all against NCCU
“The training room and Justin’s perseverance came together,” Cutcliffe said. “I don’t know anybody that is more diligent than Justin Foxx. He did everything they asked him to do and he didn’t do too much. He just didn’t waste a day.”
-- The secondary will indeed be young with two sophomores (Norman, Cash) and a redshirt freshman (McCarthy) listed as starters at safety. True freshmen Chris Holmes and Deondre Singleton are listed on the two-deep chart behind those three.
At cornerback redshirt senior Garett Patterson is starting opposite All-ACC cornerback Ross Cockrell. But true freshmen Breon Borders and Bryon Fields are on the two-deep along with redshirt freshman DeVon Edwards.
“We are going to play a number of people,” Cutcliffe said. “So if somebody is coming out of the game, don’t look at that as somebody failing. We anticipate playing numbers of people in the secondary.”
-- LB Kelby Brown as a starter is a good thing for Duke. Brown missed all of last season with a torn ACL. Cutcliffe says, “We are thankful that Kelby is there. Our biggest concern is that Kelby stays healthy. He is certainly the dominant person there for us.”
-- True freshmen WRs Johnell Barnes and Ryan Smith are listed as reserves on the two-deep.
“I feel in my heart the wideouts will be as good a group as a season ago,” Cutcliffe said.
-- Injury report will be released on Thursday. But Cutcliffe said only players known right now to be out due to injury are: QB Thomas Sirk (Achilles), OT Tanner Stone (foot), OT Casey Blaser (hand) and DE Jordan Dewalt-Ondijo (ankle).
