Former Blue Devil Shannon Rowbury secured an automatic bid by placing first in the 1,500. Rowbury became the first Duke woman to win an event at the U.S. Olympic Trials as she clocked in at 4:05.48 in the third and final qualifying race on the last day of competition. Rowbury, a 2007 Duke grad, is the Duke record holder in the distance with a 4:14.81 time in 2005. She also is the Blue Devils’ lone women’s national champion, which came in the indoor mile in 2007. Former Tar Heel Erin Donohue also earned a spot on the Olympic team, finishing second in the 1,500 with a 4:08.20. Donohue joins fellow Tar Heels Blake Russell (marathon), Alice Schmidt (800) and Shalane Flanagan (5000, 10000) in earning an Olympic berth. Pole vaulter Jillian Schwartz, who graduated from Duke in 2001, made it to the finals and came up just short of her second straight Olympic bid. Her vault of 14-9 was two inches short of third place, which would have guaranteed her a spot on the squad.

Even though the Tar Heels haven't relied on power to win games all season, UNC coach Mike Fox said that doesn't mean his team isn't able to blast one out of the park.
