BAHAMA — Mr. Charlie Eakes, 62, of Bahama passed away Sunday, February 7, 2010.
Mr. Eakes was a lifelong resident of Bahama, the son of the late Edward Eakes and Daisy Oakley. He is also preceded in death by his sister, Mahalia Crabtree.
Mr. Eakes was an ‘awesome’ welder, working at Millers and Mayville Metal most of his life. He enjoyed his Nascar, cooking out, and sharing good times with family and friends.
He is survived by his son, James Eakes and wife, Kim, of Bahama; daughter, Rita Miller and husband, Mike, of Franklin County; two grandsons, Justin and Josh; brothers, George Eakes
of Durham and Edward Preston ‘Duck’ Eakes of Stem; sisters, Bettie Gean Polson of Durham, Melba ‘Tootsie’ Ellis of Bahama, Mary Alice Castle of Durham, Connie Currin of Durham, and Rachael Blackwell of Stem; and seven nieces and five nephews.
There will be a memorial service Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Ellis Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Marilyn Shipman officiating.
The family will receive friends before and after the service.

Sandra Lisk ‘Sandy’ Fearrington
CHAPEL HILL — Sandra Lisk “Sandy” Fearrington, 66, of Chapel Hill, went to be with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Sunday, February 7, 2010 at UNC Hospital after a long battle with multiple complications from diabetes.
Mrs. Fearrington was born in Guilford County on January 20, 1944 to Leard Evander Lisk Jr. and Eva Caudle Lisk. She was employed with Dillard paper Company and owned Golden Gate Outlet Ladies Shop in Greensboro. Mrs. Fearrington was also associated with Guilford County Home Economics and USDA ASCA offices.
She is survived by her husband, Paul Elwood Fearrington Jr.; daughter, Angela Fearrington Reeves and husband, Eric, of Chapel Hill; step-daughters, Kimberly Fearrington Darnell and Tommy Darnell of Apex, and Karen Fearrington and partner, Christine O’Sullivan of Apex; grandchildren, Emily Darnell and Kaylie Darnell, Jordan Fearrington, Collin O’Sullivan, and Bandon Paul Reeves; brothers, Van Lisk III and Terry Lisk; sister, Wanda Bowman and husband, Gary; and her niece and nephews.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, February 10, 2010 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Apex Funeral Home, 550 W. Williams St. (Hwy 55), Apex.
A funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 11, 2010 at Merritt’s Chapel UMC, 1090 Farrington Point Rd, Chapel Hill, conducted by the Rev. Richard Farmer. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

ROUGEMONT — Jeroline Laws Mangum, age 81, of 8111 Bunny Road died Monday, February 8, 2010 at Durham Regional Hospital.
She was born in Orange County to the late Bernard Russell Laws and Pattie Gates Laws. She was retired from Gates Egg Farm. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie L. Mangum; and one granddaughter, Amy Poole Cabe.
Surviving are her children, Carolyn M. Poole and Landis Mangum, both of Rougemont; one brother, Felton Laws of Roxboro; one sister, Pattie Mae Kiger of Rougemont; one grandchild, Christy P. Johnson; and two great-grandchildren, Jeremiah and Dalton Johnson.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at the Brooks & White Funeral Home in Roxboro and other times at the home of her sister, Pattie Mae Kiger, 8115 Bunny Road, Rougemont.

HILLSBOROUGH — Howard ‘Pollie’ Earl Medlin, age 77, 1911 Orange Grove Rd., Hillsborough, died February 8, 2010 at 2:25 a.m. at UNC.
Howard retired from Cone Mills after 25+ years of service; music was the highlight of his life.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Medlin of the home; daughters, Susan Carden and husband, Ronnie, of Durham, Joyce Grizzle and husband, David, of Hillsborough, Mandy Broome and husband, Eugene, of Stoneville; sons, Robert Earl Medlin and wife, Robin, of Ooltewah Tenn., Mark Anthony Medlin of Efland; nine Grandchildren; nine great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Lee Medlin and Mary Ida Monday Medlin; sisters, Irene Davis, Essie Andrews and Louise Dunn; brothers, Fred Medlin, Buddy Medlin and John Medlin.
The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb, 10, 2010 at McClure Funeral Chapel in Mebane with the Rev. Eugene Broome officiating. Burial will be in Hillsborough Cemetery. The family will receive friends at McClure Funeral Home in Mebane from 6 until 8 this evening. Other times they will be at the home of David Brian Grizzle, 5204 Meadow Field Dr. Mebane.

ROXBORO — Mrs. Mary Jo Jackson Barton of 856 Burlington Road, died Sunday, February 7, 2010, ay her home.
Mrs. Barton was a native of Person County daughter of the late Lorraine Bailey and Stonewall Jackson, wife of the late William Wallace Barton.
Mrs. Barton was preceded in death by two sons, William Wallace Barton, Jr. and Paul Barton; one brother, David Jackson and was a member of Westwood Baptist Church.
Mrs. Barton is survived by three daughters, Jodie Barton of Roxboro, Lisa B. Stephens and husband Jack of Leasburg, Stacy B. Strickland and husband Jimi of Roxboro; two brothers, Reginald Jackson of Sanford and Danny Jackson of South Lake, Texas; eight grandchildren, Wendy Kerr, Kristin Linthicum and husband Ben Allison Stephens, Jay Stephens and wife Whitney, Will Stephens, Trae Strickland, Zack Strickland, Kacee Strickland; two great-grandchildren, Paul Thomas Solomon and Harper Linthicum.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Brooks and White funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Herbert Brown. A private interment will follow at Person Memorial Cemetery.

RABUN GAP, GA. — William Frederick Schuck III, 26, of Rabun Gap, Georgia, tragically died while on duty with the Oconee County, S.C. Sheriff’s Department on Sunday, February 7, 2010.
He was born in Baltimore, Md. and was the son of William Frederick Schuck Jr. and Darlene Schuck.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Erin Schuck; and his paternal grandmother, Theresa Schuck.
In addition to his parents Mr. Schuck is survived by his loving wife, Carey Ann Johnston Schuck of the home; a sister, Rebecca Anderson of Baltimore, Md.; maternal grandparents, Edwin and Anna Reid; and his paternal grandfather, William F. Schuck Sr.
He was a graduate of Orange County High School in Durham and graduated from Western Carolina University with a degree in Criminal Justice. Mr Schuck worked for three different police departments ‘ Durham City Police Department, West Columbia City Police Department and the Oconee County Sheriffs Department. He volunteered helping the JV Boys and Varsity Girls Soccer Teams at Rabun Gap Nacoochee School.
The family will receive friends at Beck Funeral Home on Tuesday, February 9, 2010 from 5 to 7 p.m. A memorial service will be held following visitation at 7 p.m. in the Beck Funeral Home Chapel.

George Wallace Curtis
DURHAM -- Mr. George Wallace Curtis, 97, died Friday afternoon at his home. Mr. Curtis was born in Palacios, TX, the son of the late Myrtle Ashley Curtis and the late George Walker Curtis. He served in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II and later attended Texas A & M University. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a supervisor with Exxon Mobil Oil. Mr. Curtis was a member of Edgewood Baptist Church. Prior to becoming a member of Durham Masonic Lodge # 352, he was a District Deputy Grand Master in Kerrville, TX. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Pauline Harman.
Mr. Curtis is survived by his wife, Betty Ferrell Youngs Curtis; a godson, Douglas Youngs of Glendale, Ariz.; a brother, Robert Curtis of Nacogdoches, TX; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Monday 2 p.m. at Edgewood Baptist Church with Pastor Ernest Ferrell and Kenneth Ferrell, Sr. officiating. Following the funeral service, Masonic Lodge # 352 will conduct the committal service.
Pallbearers will be Henry Ward, Gerry Williams, Roy Wallace, Tommy Simmons, Buck Ferrell and Robert Griffin. The family will receive friends Monday from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church. Frances Pendergraft 'Sis' Ellington
DURHAM -- Mrs. Frances Pendergraft 'Sis' Ellington, 84, of Durham, died at Treyburn Healthcare on Friday, February 5, 2010.
Mrs. Ellington, a native and lifelong resident of Durham, was the daughter of the late Robert Levy Pendergraft and Clemmie Lorraine Sykes Pendergraft. She worked for CCB bank as a teller and was a faithful member of Lowes Grove Baptist Church.
Sis was a woman of God, a grandmother, a sister, a best friend and a mother to many. She was a vision of grace, beautiful inside and out. Sis stood tall with dignity and pride, a pride not of this world but of who she was in Christ Jesus. Sis loved God and singing His praises in church. She cooked memorable family dinners that brought her family and friends together for fun and fellowship. Sis would talk and laugh and love. She was always present. Although she will be dearly missed, Sis left us many blessings, wonderful memories and her faith.
She is survived by two sons, Tom Roberts of Washington, N.C. and Rodney Roberts, Sr. of Creedmoor; one sister, Catherine Utley of Durham, four grandchildren, Rodney Roberts, Jr., Traci Farmer, Tommy Roberts II, Karrick Lossinger and two great-grandchildren, Jackson and Ava Farmer.
Also survived by extended family Cathy Riggsbee and Landon Riggsbee.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Chapel, officiated by Rev. Forest Gale. Entombment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum. Active pallbearers will be Daryl Pitts, Larry Perkins, Marvin Utley, Lou Utley, Ken Smith and Joe Farmer.

A native of Granville County the daughter of the late Roger and Cora Nelson Currin. She was a member of Stovall Baptist Church and a homemaker.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Stovall Baptist Church by Rev. Eddie Mauldin. Burial will be in Stovall Memorial Cemetery.

Julius S. Howard 'Papa J'
PALM SPRINGS, VA. -- Julius S. Howard 'Papa J', 68, died on Saturday, February 6, 2010. Papa J. was born in Wake County, NC to the late Carl and Pauline Howard on October 14, 1941.
Papa J. was a 1959 Graduate of Chapel Hill High School. He also worked with Triangle Ford Industrial Engines for 25 + years where he eventually retired as General Manager. He served with the National Guard for 8 years. He was and did many things that he was greatly proud of, but his greatest pleasures came from the time and company that he spent with his family and close friends. Papa J. lived for his grandchildren and seemed to collect more than just his own everywhere that he went. He was a great man and will always be remembered with every sunset, trip to the lake and Duke victory.
He was a Shriner and a Mason and until he was no longer able to, he greatly enjoyed donating his time to both organizations in their efforts to help children everywhere.
Papa J. is survived by his wife Ann Howard of Palmer Springs, Va.; son Steve Howard (Laura Ann) of Durham; daughter Kimberly Howard Naughton of Raleigh; grandchildren Zach McGhee, Taylor Naughton, Rachel Ann Howard, Emma Howard, and Jake Howard; brother Eddie Howard of Durham and many good friends. He is predeceased by his parents and his faithful pet companion of many years C.J.

Charlie Branson Crabtree
BAHAMA -- Mr. Charlie Branson Crabtree, 96, went home to be with his Lord and Savior and his beloved wife Thursday morning.
Mr. Crabtree was born July 3, 1913 in the Mangum Township (Bahama) to the late Charlie and Mattie Crabtree. He married his high school sweetheart, Nellie Roberts in 1938 and they shared an uncommon bond of love for 65 years. Branson was a farmer in his early years, and never gave up his love for the outdoors and for all of God's creations.
He loved serving other people, but mostly his Lord. Mr. Crabtree served in the US Army, and retired as a foreman at American Tobacco Company, where he was employed for 41 years. Branson was a faithful member of Union Grove United Methodist Church since age 12. He was also a member of the Knap of Reeds Masonic Lodge #158 A.F. & A.M. in Bahama.
Mr. Crabtree is survived by his sister, Eunice Nichols; many nieces and nephews; family members and dear friends, all of whom he loved so very much. In addition to his wife and parents, he was pre-deceased by three brothers; and four sisters.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the Howerton Bryan Funeral Chapel, the Rev. Cheryl Lawrence officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Lebanon Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery on Guess Road (at Russell Road).

Timmons and husband Anthony of Madison Wisconsin; Cloyce Michelle Hunter, and Yvonne Lassiter-Murphy and husband Jevon of Durham; four grandsons, Charles McIntyre, Damien Lassiter and Joshua Murphy of Durham and Jesse T. DURHAM -- John Robert 'Whisel' Patterson departed his life on February 4, 2010.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Mrs. Jennie C. Patterson. He leaves to cherish his memories wife Diana L. Patterson; his father, Robert E. Patterson; daughters, LaQuishia R. Patterson, Sheralyn P. Forrest (Roderick Sr.), and Nikia N. Patterson; brothers Barry Patterson Sr. (Dinah), Michael Patterson Sr. (Shelia) and Floyd Patterson (Tamara) and seven grandchildren, all of Durham, NC.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, February 9, 2010 at Mt. Sinai Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Viewing will be one hour prior to the service at 1 p.m.
Odessa Carr Samford
DURHAM -- Mrs. Odessa Carr Samford, formerly of 1205 Fleetwood St, and for the past 7 years a resident of Atlanta, Ga., made her transition from this life to eternal life on Thursday, February 4, 2010. Her service will be held at 12 noon on Tuesday, February 9, at the Ebenezer Baptist Church, 2200 S. Alston Ave. The family visitation is from 11:30 a.m. to 12 noon, one half hour prior to the service.
Surviving are six children; Thomas Edward, Douglas Clark, Yvonne S. Dunlap, Katrina S. Evans, Connie S. Corders and Anthony Devon; one sister, Bertha K. Tyus, and many other family and friends. There will be a public viewing from 1 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Monday at Burthey Funeral Chapel.

Dorothy Wray Harris Beach
OXFORD -- Dorothy Wray Harris Beach, a resident of Oxford, died Saturday, February 6, 2010 in Brantwood Nursing Center. She was a native of Granville Co. and was the daughter of the late John Pearson Harris and Irma Grant Harris. Dorothy was the widow of the late John W. Beach. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church where she was active in the choir, a lifetime member of the Presbyterian Women, the Women's Circle and active in all church activities.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, February 10, 2010 at 2 p.m. in the Oxford Presbyterian Church by Rev. Alan Koeneke. Burial will be in Meadowview Memorial Park.
There are no immediate survivors, but she was preceded in death by a daughter, Sally Grant Elliott and a brother, J.P. Harris, Jr.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service in the church fellowship hall.

Pauline Clayton Coleman
ROXBORO -- Pauline Clayton Coleman, age 86, 106 Brater Street, Roxboro, NC died Saturday morning, February 6, 2010 at Person Memorial Hospital.
Mrs. Coleman was a native of Person County, NC, daughter of the late Robert Zach and Gracie Saunders Clayton and wife of the late Lawrence Nichols Coleman. She was a homemaker and was a member of North Roxboro Baptist Church. Surviving is a daughter, Pam Coleman of Roxboro, N.C.; a son, Bob Coleman and Carol Silbaugh of Roxboro, N.C.; two grandchildren, Josh Poole and Michael Coleman and wife, Dawn; two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Ian Coleman
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday, February 8, in the Strickland Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Ben Durand. Interment will follow in the Providence Baptist Church Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Sunday, February 7, from 6 till 8 p.m. at Strickland Funeral Home and other times at the home.

Dorothy White Hoyle
HENDERSON -- Dorothy White Hoyle, age 84, a resident of 1417 Peace Street, died Friday, February 5, 2010 at her home. Born in Vance County on April 10, 1925 she was the daughter of the late Ed Gardner White and Blanche Thompson White. She was the widow of the late Wilson Edison Hoyle.
Mrs. Hoyle and her husband were the former owners and operators of Hoyle's Jewelers in Henderson for over thirty years. She was a member of Gillburg United Methodist Church and active with the American Cancer Society from 1974 to 1986.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at the Gillburg United Methodist Church by Rev. Ray Pearce and Rev. Pam Gilliam. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.
She is survived by one son, Michael W. Hoyle and wife Beth of Durham; one sister, Marion W. Bennett of Henderson; two brothers, Billy E. White and Edwin T. White both of Henderson; three grandchildren, Elisabeth Anne Hoyle of Raleigh, John Wilson Hoyle and wife Kerry, and Meredith Hoyle Wilkins and husband Scotty all of Durham; and two great-grandsons, Mason Scott Wilkins and Carter Wilson Hoyle. She was preceded in death by one son, Eddie Wilson Hoyle and two sisters Goldie White Ayscue and Mary Frances White Thompson.
The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the home.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Will Hoyle, Scotty Wilkins, Jeff Dickerson, Larry Thompson, Jimmy Hoyle and Raymond Strum. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Donald Gupton, Neil Wolfe, William Baker, Joseph Lassiter, Brad Satterwhite, Donnie Hoyle, William Cawthorne, Wallace Cawthorne and Wade Abbott.
