Duke, UNC roll in exhibitions
DURHAM -- Junior Jasmine Thomas led the way with 17 points, freshman Allison Vernerey scored 16 in her debut and senior Joy Cheek pulled down a team high 13 rebounds as Duke ran away from Wingate 99-31 in an exhibition contest Thursday night.
Six Blue Devils scored in double-figures with Cheek, junior Krystal Thomas, junior Karima Christmas and sophomore Kathleen Scheer all chipping in with 12 points.
The Blue Devils ended the game shooting 41-of-83 (.494) from the field and 7-of-19 (.368) from 3. Duke heated up in the second half connecting on 20-of-35 (.571) shots.
Vernerey ran the floor well in her debut in front of the Cameron faithful with Thomas and sophomore Chelsea Hopkins finding the 6-8 target in the middle of the paint.
Heels dominate Francis Marion
CHAPEL HILL -- Freshman Tierra Ruffin-Pratt led five Tar Heels in double figures as No. 5 North Carolina topped Division II Francis Marion 105-64.
Ruffin-Pratt added seven rebounds, four steals and three assists for the Tar Heels, who play their final exhibition Nov. 10 against Carson-Newman. FMU's Shannon Singleton-Bates had a game-high 28 points to lead the Patroits.
After Ruffin-Pratt opened the game with a 3-pointer, Francis Marion scored six of the next eight points to take its final lead of the night at 6-5. Carolina then responded with a 14-2 run that gave the hosts some breathing room before another extended run that put the game out of reach.
Led by four buckets from Ruffin-Pratt, the Tar Heels scored 23 straight over a five-minute stretch starting at the 11:48 mark to open up a 30-point lead at 44-14.
