Schools in the UNC system are also grappling with budget cuts, and leaders on the system's 17 campuses are being asked to collectively trim their budgets by more than $170 million.

Members of the UNC board of governors gathered in Chapel Hill on Thursday to hear from where the more than 900, mostly administrative job cuts throughout the system, have come from over the past year to achieve the targeted budget reduction.

Locally, the region's three state supported schools have lost more than 420 positions.

UNC Chapel Hill, which was forced to cut its budget back by $68 million for the 2009-10 academic year, has lost 203 full time positions.

Meanwhile, N.C. State lost 205 positions as part of a 57 million budget reduction.

And in Durham, N.C. Central University was forced to trim 21 administrative positions as part of a budget reduction totaling $8.7 million for the academic year.
