How cool is it to have a festival that’s bringing 48 artists from all over who will converge on different venues downtown to entertain residents and visitors with jazz and further enhance the Bull City’s image?
Two visionaries gave the inaugural Art of Cool Festival life. They did it at warp speed. Cicely Mitchell and trumpet player Al Strong started The Art of Cool Project in 2011 to promote jazz. The concerts were popular, and the number of venues grew in 2012. Two years later, there’s a full-blown festival with major headliners and a lot of buy-in from downtown businesses and music lovers.
As thanks to Mitchell and Strong for making all of us and our city a little bit cooler and more cultural, we are naming them this week’s Grit Award winners.
