This newspaper was founded in 1889, never missing a day of publishing. We consider that some serious longevity. But J.E. Ladd & Son Transfer has us beat. The moving company began in 1882, well before there were trucks in which to move people.
Instead, J.E. Ladd headed downtown with his horse and wagon to meet people disembarking from the train and take them to their destination.
From dray service to delivering voting machines to polling sites, J.E. Ladd & Son Transfer has grown and thrived.
Jimmy Ladd retired this week and has passed the torch to son Jay and son-in-law Rodney Lewis. We congratulate this Durham family institution – the winner of this week’s Grit Award – on its many years of serving customers, and we hope to see it in operation for many more decades to come.
