Burr’s tax reform plan would benefit Burr and friends

I occasionally write to Sen. Richard Burr to express my views as a citizen of North Carolina. Sometimes he writes back to me, always a vacuous (having or showing a lack of thought or intelligence; mindless) form letter until today.

On April 4, I wrote to Burr about my concerns that historically low tax rates during a decade-long war were not sustainable: "Tax rates and tax revenues as a percent of GDP are at post-WWII lows. That is not sustainable after 10 years of unfunded war. If you think it is, then you need to brush up on your economics."

Today, I received his response. He believes that taxes must be reformed: "We need a tax system that reduces the overall tax burden on Americans while also creating an economic environment that encourages private sector innovation and investment." What do you think will accomplish this?

Burr knows. "This is why I am a cosponsor of the Fair Tax Act of 2013." In case you haven't heard about this one, in Burr’s words "it will eliminate all personal and corporate income taxes, in addition to payroll, estate and gift taxes. It would replace these taxes with a single-rate, federal sales tax."

Think how this will benefit Burr and his rich friends. They won't have to pay lawyers, accountants and lobbyists to avoid taxes anymore, because you will be paying the same rate they pay. This will enable them to innovate and invest more.

Why didn't we think of this years ago?

In praise of George W. Bush

Congratulations to former President George W. Bush upon the opening of his presidential library!

Among his many heartfelt accomplishments was the love he had for God and country. I also wish to thank him for "leading" this country after 9/11, which was the most horrific attack ever launched upon a nation of goodwill and peace extended throughout the world. Thank you for "KEEPING AMERICA SAFE!" Thank you for making it possible to get the "terrorist" Bin Laden through enhanced and humane interrogation that produced the pathway that gave cause for the death of Bin Laden and no casualties until a week after the excursion!

Many proud service men and women perform miraculously when orders call for such sacrifice and commitment! Your love of the greatest fighting force in the world, our United States military, showed through proudly!

May you and Laura enjoy your life together, devoted to the grandchild’s most recent arrival and many more sure to come. Thank you both as "leaders" in your devotion to our country! God bless and keep you always.
