Grit Award

It was a happy ending for Sophie, the 9-year-old Yorkshire terrier who was stolen from her family’s home Tuesday.

It’s a testament to her family that they did everything they could to spread the word that their longtime pet, who has health issues, had been taken.

A sixth-grader who saw Elizabeth Newman, Sophie’s owner, putting up reward posters liked the idea of getting a prize, and just happened to have seen a dog that looked a lot like Sophie. Sophie and her people were reunited, thanks to the sixth-grader's tip.

The thieves who took a family pet should be ashamed. They caused the owners a tremendous amount of worry and broke the heart of a 6-year-old when she discovered Sophie was not hers to keep. We hope that law enforcement officials will be able to find them through the family that had Sophie.

The family who graciously returned Sophie to her rightful owners, the young tipster and Sophie’s indefatigable family all deserve the Grit Award for getting the pooch safely home, no worse for wear except for being tired.
