UNC’s women’s team is the last one standing from the Triangle. The good news doesn’t stop there for the team, though. Coach Sylvia Hatchell said Thursday she has been cleared by doctors to join her team in Nashville for the Final Four.
Hatchell was sidelined this season as she battled leukemia. It is now in remission.
She has shared her journey with fans and players as she underwent treatment. Hatchell has inspired others by being open about her experience dealing with leukemia.
The Hall of Fame coach, who is this week’s Grit Award winner, also has inspired her team. “It’s been more motivation all season,” said UNC forward Diamond DeShields. “Winning is one step closer, every day is one step closer to her coming back. She sees the light at the end of the tunnel, and we see the light at the end of the tunnel.” We hope UNC makes it past the obstacles that remain to make it to the Final Four, both for themselves and for the coach who can finally join them there.
