If you need a reminder about what’s important in life, consider Jessica Wilkes. The 27-year-old renewed her vows with her husband, Joshua, at Duke Chapel earlier this week. It had been a dream of hers since she was a child.
Wilkes, who has battled cancer since childhood, wanted to do this before her death, which is imminent. But she is not waiting passively. She is living.
Walking down the aisle was extraordinarily difficult for her, but she did it with determination and grit, on her father’s arm, because that was part of her dream. Determination and grit are traits that friends say have always been a part of who Wilkes is. She also has always celebrated life.
We have a deep admiration for Wilkes, and the inspiration she brings. The winner of this week’s Grit Award encourages us all to live to the fullest.
