James Edward Allen Jr.
DURHAM — Mr. James Edward Allen Jr., the son of the late James Edward Allen Sr. and Margaret Cobb Allen passed on Friday, September 6, 2013 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Durham, NC. Survivors include a daughter, Yolanda Allen of Kent, Washington; a son, Steve Allen of Lubbock, Texas; a grandson, Robert Babs of Kent, Washington; several cousins; and his Brooktown family.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 12, 2013 at his church since childhood, West Durham Baptist Church, 1901 Athens St., officiated by his pastor, Reverend Dr. Terry Thomas. Funeral services will begin at 11:30 a.m. with family visitation beginning at 11 a.m.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Scarborough & Hargett Memorial Chapels and Gardens.
David R. Dean
DURHAM — David R. Dean, 79, passed away suddenly on Thursday, September 5 at his home in Little River, SC. Dave was born and raised in Durham, NC, the last of 10 children born to Junie and Minnie Dean.
Dave graduated from UNC and was a devoted Tarheel, life-long golfer, and avid sports fan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie and is survived by his daughters, Kentley, Kelley and Ashley; his sons-in-law, Richard and Kevin; five devoted grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter; his brother, Lonnie “Jim” Dean; and numerous beloved cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Memorial services will be held on Sunday, September 22 at 9:15 a.m. at his beloved Church of the Lost and Found, located at the O.D. Pavilion, 91 S. Ocean Boulevard in N. Myrtle Beach. The family will receive friends immediately following church service.

Donald Wayne Franklin
DURHAM — Donald Wayne Franklin, 75, died Monday morning at his home. A Durham native he was the son of the late Green Berry Franklin and Juis Hobby Franklin.
He was educated in the Durham City Schools and a graduate of Durham High School. Mr. Franklin was employed with North Carolina Mutual Drug Co., for 32 years.
A member of Dukes Chapel United Methodist Church he was a former trustee and deacon. He was a member of Eno Masonic Lodge 210 and a Shriner affiliated with Sudan Temple.
Surviving are his wife, Evelyn Ellis Franklin of the home; and one sister, Mary Hester of Durham. He was predeceased by a brother, George Franklin; and a sister, Virginia Marrow.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, September 11, 2013, in the Howerton & Bryan Funeral Chapel. Officiating will be the Rev. Gloria Harris. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 o'clock.

DURHAM — Elsie Harper, formerly of Carolina Point in Durham, passed away on September 9, 2013 at Duke University Hospital. She touched many lives and was a very loving and caring person to her family and friends. Mrs. Harper was born on August 13, 1929 in Person County, NC. She was the daughter of the late Jesse Long and Thelma Atkins Long Shelton.
She is survived by her two daughters, Jackie Dean (Richard) of Creedmoor and Juanita Whisnant of South Port; son, Robert Harper (Pamela) of Durham; brother, Bobby Long of Burlington; eight grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.
Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Harper; sons, Olden Waller, Tommy Atkins and Needham Sloan; brothers, Donald Long, James Long, Harvey Long and Lawrence Long.
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at 3 p.m. in the McClure Funeral Chapel in Mebane officiated by Pastor David Braddy. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 2 to 3 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. The burial will take place in the McCray Church Cemetery.

Jewel Marie Forbush Tevepaugh
DURHAM — Mrs. Jewel Marie Forbush Tevepaugh, 68, of Durham died on Monday, September 9, 2013. She was a native and lifelong resident of Durham. She was the daughter of the late Victor Crawford Forbush and Josephine Wilkins Forbush. She was a homemaker and a member of Fellowship Baptist Church. She was a caretaker of her parents and worked at the snack bar at Starlite Movie Drive-In. She was preceded in death by her son, Michael Dale Tevepaugh; one brother, Thomas “Buddy” Forbush.
She is survived by two sons, Roy Tevepaugh of Wake Forest; and Ronnie Tevepaugh of Durham; one daughter, Katie T. Berry of Creedmoor; one sister, Mary Glasgow of Durham; two grandchildren, Joseph Berry and Lauren Tevepaugh. The family would like to thank her special friend Christopher Malm for his care and companionship during her final years.
Graveside service will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Woodlawn Memorial Park. Ken Finley will officiate.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home prior to the service at Woodlawn Memorial Park. Vida Mable Philpot Winston
DURHAM — Vida Mable Philpot Winston, age 95, passed on Friday, September 6, 2013, at Hock Family Pavillion.
She is survived by her brother, Jesse Philpot, Patterson, NJ; and sister, Virginia Lambeth, Durham, NC.
Visitation with friends will take place at noon and funeral service at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept 12 at Union Chapel Baptist Church, Butner, N.C.

Sandra Gerrey Grindstaff
WALKERTOWN, NC — Mrs. Sandra Gerrey Grindstaff, 74, of Walkertown, NC, passed away on Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at Forsyth Medical Center.
Sandra was born on April 7, 1939 in Forsyth County, NC to William Preston Gerrey and Onie Marshall Gerrey. She was a member of Oak Grove Moravian Church. Sandra retired from the Forsyth County Sherriff’s Department.
Mrs. Grindstaff was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Joe Grindstaff; her parents; two brothers, William M. Gerrey and Lester J. Gerrey; and two sisters, Florence G. Boles and Mozelle G. Lewis. Mrs. Grindstaff is survived by her son, Baron Grindstaff and wife, Alison of Graham, NC; and one grandson, Samuel E. Grindstaff of Graham NC.
A funeral service was held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at Oak Grove Moravian Church with Rev. Matthew Allen officiating. Burial followed in the church graveyard. The family received friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
