DURHAM — Odessa Brown passed on Tuesday, February 4, 2014.
She is survived by her daughter, Sandra B. Jones; three grandchildren, Shawn, Steneica and Shelton Jones; three great-grandchildren, Tiffany Agerston, Braxtom Jones and Ian Jones; one great-great-grandson, Joshia.
Services will take place on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 at Emmanuel A.M.E. Church, 2018 Riddle Rd, Durham, NC 27713 at 1:30 p.m. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service.
Services are entrusted to Scarborough and Hargett Memorial Chapel and Gardens.
Henry Lee “Bo” Bryant
DURHAM — Henry Lee “Bo” Bryant, age 88, former resident of Hamlin Road died Tuesday morning at Duke Regional Hospital.
Born October 2, 1925, in Greenville, Mr. Bryant was the son of the late John Roy and Madie Lee Bullock Bryant. He had lived in Durham most of his life, and served in the United States Navy during World War II. Mr. Bryant was employed with Big Star Food Store for 36 years, where he was manager of the produce department. He was a member of Angier Avenue Baptist Church.
Mr. Bryant enjoyed bowling, and had belonged to several leagues. He was an artist, and loved fishing. He looked forward to attending his Navy reunions.
Surviving are his wife, Edna Harris Bryant; his sister, Lois Bryant Cantrell and husband James Guthrie of Orange City, Florida, and a number of nieces and nephews. He was
predeceased by his brothers, Roy Bryant and William Lynwood Bryant, and his sisters, Kathleen Bryant Rogers, Margaret Bryant Bates and Bertha Bryant Cayton.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:00 PM in the Howerton & Bryan Funeral Chapel, Rev. Forest Gale officiating. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:30 to 2:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a church of one’s choice or to a favorite charity.

DURHAM — Mrs. Elouise Gattis departed this life on February 4, 2014. She leaves to mourn one daughter, four sisters, and two brothers.
Funeral service will be Monday, February 10, 2014 at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, 2508 Crest St., at 1:00 pm and the wake 12:00 pm.

William Grady “Bill” Gooch
DURHAM — William Grady “Bill” Gooch, age 79, a resident of the Gorman community, died February 5, 2014 in Duke Regional Hospital after a short illness.
Born October 18, 1934 in Durham, Bill was the son of the late Hughie T. and Nina Haithcock Gooch. He was employed with North Carolina Mutual Drug Company for 34 years, retiring in 1994. He served in the U.S. Army.
Bill was a lifelong member of Gorman Baptist Church, serving as the Sunday school secretary for 47 years. A sports fan all his life, he enjoyed watching football, baseball, and NASCAR. He carried a ball and glove with him in his car, and was always ready for a game of catch with his nephews and great-nephews.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by three sisters, Margaret Sutton, Thelma Washington, Peggy Nifong, and a brother, Tom Gooch.
Surviving are nephews, Sammy (Betty Jo) Nifong of Castle Hayne, Dale (Cathy) Nifong of Dublin, GA, Doug Nifong (Teresa) of Wilmington, Hal Washington (Brenda) of Youngsville, Tommy Fuquay of Ormond Beach, FL, Chris Sutton (Kathy) and Tom Sutton (Donna) of Erie, PA, nieces, Susan Voges (Bill) and Nancy Saulf (Joe) of Ormond Beach, FL, Maggie Washington of Youngsville, and Gayle (Jim) Adams of Wake Forest. He is also survived by many great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday at the Gorman Baptist Church, Dr. C.J. Bordeaux officiating. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service at the church.

Otha MacDonald Greene
DURHAM — Otha MacDonald Greene, 71, (Mac) departed his life on February 4, 2014.
He leaves behind his son Bernard Greene, sister Zella G. Alston, other relatives and friends.
Funeral service will be held at First Ledge Rock Baptist Church, 4719 Redwood Rd. on Monday, February 10, 2014 with the wake at 12:00 noon and service at 1:00 pm.

Roderick Sebastian Heath
DURHAM — Born on October 25, 1937 in Birmingham, Alabama to October Wade Heath and Lucille Parker Heath. He accepted Christ at an early age and united with Saint Luke AME Zion Church in East Birmingham. He attended Lincoln Elementary School and graduated from A.H. Parker High School in 1955 in Birmingham, Alabama where, he was President of his senior class. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. After being discharged, he attended North Carolina A&T University followed by employment with The Wastewater Treatment Plant. He leaves to cherish his memories two daughters Crystal Pace (William) and Monique Webb, 4 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren, loving sister Evangeline Williams (Carmin), devoted niece Carmen Perkins (Byron), sister-in-law Barbara Heath, step-son Shelton Watlington, longtime friend, Delphine Lemon and many other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held Sunday, February 9, 2014 at Fisher Funeral Home from 5:00PM – 7:00PM. Burial will be Monday, February 10th, 2014 at 2 PM at The Veterans National Cemetery in Salisbury, North Carolina.
Donald Ray Maxwell
DURHAM — Donald Ray Maxwell, 57, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 2, 2014 at his home.
He leaves to cherish his memory his lovely wife, Lisa D. Maxwell; four daughters; two sons; five grandchildren; one brother; one aunt; and one daughter-in-law; and other relatives and friends.
A wake will be held at Holloway Memorial Funeral Home on Monday, February 10, 2014 at 12:00 pm and funeral service at 1:00 pm.
Helmy Hamdollah Baligh
HILLSBOROUGH — Dr. Helmy Hamdollah Baligh passed away Monday, January 27 at his home surrounded by his loving family following a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease. He was born in Cairo, Egypt on October 17, 1931 to Hamdollah Baligh and Aziza Tewfik. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two siblings, Samiha Baligh Hafez and Mostapha Baligh.
Helmy matriculated at the English Mission College in Cairo. He studied at Dulwich College and then Brasenose College at Oxford University where he received a BA with Honours. Following graduation, Helmy worked for Standard Oil in Egypt in the management training program.
In 1956, Helmy left Egypt to attend the University of California at Berkeley. He received a Master's of Business Administration in 1958. After fulfilling his military duty in Egypt, he returned to California and enrolled in the Business Administration PhD Program at UC Berkeley. Helmy married Sara Jane Walker in September 1959. He received his PhD in 1963 and became a naturalized citizen in 1965. Helmy was an Associate Professor of Business at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign from 1962 to 1967. He moved the family to North Carolina in 1967 when he took a position at Duke University, where he was recruited to assist in the development of the Graduate Business School at Duke. He developed the first curriculum, became a Full Professor in 1970 and served as the Associate Dean from 1971 to 1973. Helmy took his family to Cairo on sabbatical in 1973 where he taught at Cairo University. Returning to NC in 1974 he continued teaching until his retirement and appointment to Professor Emeritus in 2002. During his tenure he published numerous articles and several books.
Helmy enjoyed spending time with his family, horses, horse racing, foxhunting, soccer, swimming, boxing, rugby and squash. He was a longtime member of the Chapel Hill Tennis Club and the Red Mountain Fox Hounds. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sara Jane (Sally Walker) Baligh; three daughters, Aziza Baligh Clark and her husband Scott, Magda Baligh and her husband Nabil Bensimmou, Laila Baligh Patrick and her husband Jay; and four grandchildren, Kenzi and Nazli Clark, and Talib and Adaira Patrick.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Parkinson’s and Movement Disorders Center, Department of Neurology, School of Medicine, Duke University, Durham, NC. Plans for a celebration of his life will be announced later.
Bryan Roberts Yates
CHAPEL HILL — Bryan Roberts Yates, 77, former owner of Bryan Yates Plumbing and Heating went to his heavenly home on February 6, 2014. He is survived by his wife, Helen Hogan Yates, children Linda Comer, Sonya Gilmore, Nadine Zollars and Paul Yates and 5 grandchildren. Visitation will be held at Walker's Funeral Home in Chapel Hill on Sunday, February 9, from 6-8 pm. The funeral will be held at 2 pm on Monday, February 11, at Mt. Pleasant UMC on Mann's Chapel Road in Pittsboro.
Virginia Johnson Lunsford
TIMBERLAKE — Virginia Johnson Lunsford, age 79, of Timberlake, NC passed away peacefully Thursday night, February 6, 2014 at Person Memorial Hospital with her family by her side after a courageous battle with cancer.
Mrs. Lunsford was a native of Chatham County, NC, daughter of the late Ralph Leslie & Cass Fox Johnson and wife of 15 years to Cheatham Donald Lunsford who survives. After retirement from Roxboro Manufacturing she helped her son with catering and prep work at The Homestead Steakhouse. She loved her family and especially her great-granddaughter, Charleigh Burke, and was a member of Antioch Baptist Church. Her hobbies included her yard and working in her flowers.
Surviving in addition to her husband are two sons, Randy L. Cash & wife, Debby of Timberlake, NC, James W. Oliver, Jr. of Roxboro, NC, two step-daughters, Donna Ray Atkins & husband, John of Cocoa, FL, Wanda Faucette of Timberlake, NC, brother, Joe Leslie Johnson of Roxboro, granddaughter, Calyn Cash Burke & husband, Charles, great-granddaughter, Charleigh Catherine Burke and great grandson, Casen Cash Edmund Burke.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Lunsford is preceded in death by a sister, Hilda Johnson Chambers, granddaughter, Catherine Christy “Cassie” Cash and a step-daughter, Deborah Lunsford Ellis.
A celebration of life and homegoing service will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. Monday, February 10, 2014 at Antioch Baptist Church by the Dr. M. David Chambers. A visitation and meal will be from 5:00 till 7:00 p.m. prior to the service in the church fellowship hall. The public may visit and view Mrs. Lunsford after 2:00 p.m. Monday, February 10 at the church. The family will receive friends other times at the home of Randy & Debby Cash, 155 Frank Timberlake Road, Timberlake, NC. A private interment at Burchwood Cemetery will be held at a later date.
Pallbearers will be Jimmy Bryant, Andy Chambers, Rick Chambers, Eddie Eubanks, Rick Foushee, Paul Hair, Pete Horne, Bryan Moore, Bo Smith and Jeff Taylor. Employees of The Homestead Steakhouse and The Roxboro Homestead Florist will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Joyce Ann Day Walters
ROXBORO — Joyce Ann Day Walters, 78 of 249 Barnette-Tingen Road, died Thursday, February 6, 2014 at Duke Regional Hospital. Born in Person County daughter of the late T. T. Day & Bessie Chambers Day, in addition to her parents she was preceded in death by three brothers & three sisters. Mrs. Walters retired from C & A after thirty-five years of service and enjoyed working at several softball fields in the county. She was a member of North Roxboro Baptist Church.
Surviving are her husband of over fifty-two years E. C. Walters of the home; three children Allen Walters of Roxboro, Todd Walters & wife Dee Dee of Blairs, Va., Tammy Walters of Roxboro; her sister Shirley Gravitte of Danville, Va., four grandchildren Libby McDonald & husband Andrew, Sammanthia Walters, Crissy Byrd & Brandon Walters,; two great-grandchildren Kadance Lawson & Cole McDonald.
Funeral Services will be held 3:00 PM Sunday, February 9, 2014 at North Roxboro Baptist Church by the Rev. Ben Durand & Rev. Herbert Brown. Interment will follow in Person Memorial Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Saturday from 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM at North Roxboro Baptist Church and other times at the home of her daughter Tammy Walters, 237 Cedar Grove Church Road, Roxboro, NC 27574.
