DURHAM
Leon Allen "lil Leon" DesChamps Jr.
DURHAM - Mr. Leon Allen DesChamps Jr., 43, passed on February 26, 2013. Born in Brooklyn, NY, Mr. DesChamp Jr. was the son of the late Mr. Leon A. DesChamp Sr. and Ms. Betty Merkerson.
Survivors include his wife, Jerrie Freeman; children, Latronicca, Amanda and Ronnie; mother, Ms. Betty Merkerson; two sisters, Jeanine Sutton and Latoya DesChamps.
Services will take place on Monday, March 4, 2013 at Victorius Praise Fellowship C.O.G.I.C., 2116 Page Rd., Durham, NC 27703, at 11:30 a.m. A visitation with family will precede service at 10:30 a.m. The DesChamps family is assisted by Scarborough and Hargett Memorial Chapel and Gardens.


John Andrew Dickerson
DURHAM — Mr. John Andrew Dickerson, 80, of 1714 Capps St., died Sunday, February 24, 2013 at Hock Family Pavilion.
His service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Monday, March 4 at the Holy Cross Catholic Church, 2438 South Alston Ave. The family will receive friends at the church from 12:30 to 1 p.m., one half hour prior to the service.
Mr. Dickerson is survived by his sister, Lida D. Malloy; and his brother, Nathaniel Dickerson.

Joseph Walker Garrard II
DURHAM - Joseph Walker Garrard II, 97, died at 1:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 28, 2013 at his home.
Mr. Garrard was born in Durham County on February 11, 1916, a son of Isaac Marion Garrard and Lonie Grey Sanford. He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Boddie Green; his son, Isaac Marion Garrard II; his sister, Lucille G. Dunnagan; his two brothers, John T. Garrard and Robert S. Garrard.
He founded Garrard Sausage Company and with the assistance of his son, accomplished widespread distribution of its products.   He retired at the age of 70 and began to enjoy leisure time on the golf courses of The Villages, Florida and in and around Durham. He developed many friendships during his long and full life and treasured all of them. He delighted in telling stories and was a master at wit and communication. He was a member of Grey Stone Baptist Church.
He is survived by two daughters, Marie G. Kolodij and her husband, Roman, Luanne G. Holland and her husband, Jimmy; three granddaughters, Lauren Jones, Jennifer Hall and Rachel Holland; two grandsons, Joseph Garrard III and Dillon Holland; five great grandchildren, Neah and Cailyn Garrard, Carson and Emory Jones, and Luke Hall. He is also survived by Salle Elizabeth Bell who shared his professional work and was a personal family friend for over 50 years.
Friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. this evening at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.
Funeral Service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday in the Chapel of Hall-Wynne Funeral Service with the Rev. Dr. Clay Waters and the Rev. Malbert Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery.

DURHAM — Silas Powell, 85, departed this life on Sunday, February, 24, 2013. He is survived by one daughter, Sheila T. Brown of Durham, NC.; one sister, Legirthia Frink of Philadelphia, PA; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Services will be held at Holloway Memorial Funeral Home, Monday, March 4 , 2013 at 1 p.m. with visitation at noon.

Elnora N. Worth
MEBANE — Elnora N. Worth of Mebane died in her home on Tues., Feb. 26 at the age of 85.
A public viewing will be held on Sun., Mar. 3 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home, 112 S. Graham St., Chapel Hill.
Funeral Services will be held on Mon., Mar. 4 at First Baptist Church, 106 N. Roberson St., Chapel Hill, beginning at noon.


ORANGE
Jacquelyn Renee Taft
CHAPEL HILL — Miss Jacquelyn Renee Taft, 22, passed away Thursday, February 28, 2013. She was born in New Castle Co., DE to John Kenneth Taft and Lori N. Taft. Jacki is also survived by her brother, Colin Kenneth Taft. Jacki attended Cedar Ridge High School in Orange County, NC, graduating in 2008. She was active in sports, clubs and student government, serving as Class President Junior and Senior years. She attended UNC-Chapel Hill, majoring in Chemistry and graduating in 2012. She routinely volunteered to help various activities and causes while at the University, including a trip to Honduras over spring break to assist with the Global Medical Brigades program in the poorer sections of the country. Jacki would not shy away from an argument and, with joy in her heart, would be quick with a laugh should the situation arise. She presented a down to earth personality, accepting all the variety of humanity. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends. We love you Jacki.

Bobby Wayne Rogers
HENDERSON — Bobby Wayne Rogers, 78, of 2039 Valley View Drive, Henderson, NC died Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at his home.
Born in Vance County on June 19, 1934, he was the son of the late Hartwell Biscoe Rogers and Rena Gentry Rogers.
Bobby graduated from Henderson High School in 1952, whereupon he entered the United States Navy.  After declining a commission to the U.S. Naval Academy, Bobby received his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1955.  He then enrolled at North Carolina State College where he graduated in 1959 with a degree in Civil Engineering.  He worked full-time for the U.S. Bureau of Ships while attending law school at George Washington University.
Bobby returned to Henderson in 1963 and began practicing law.  He was the Prosecuting Attorney in Vance County Recorder’s Court.  He also served in the North Carolina House of Representatives from 1970 to 1976, and was a member of the Board of Trustees at Vance Granville Community College from 1977 to 1989.  Governor Jim Hunt awarded Bobby the Order of the Long Leaf Pine Award in 1995.  Bobby loved his family, North Carolina State College, practicing law, thoroughbred horses, and the Democratic Party.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 3, 2013 at 4:00 p.m., at First United Methodist Church, conducted by Dr. John Check.  Burial will follow at Sunset Gardens.
Left behind to cherish his memory are his wife, Kim Johnson Rogers; his children, Sam Rogers of Boone, NC, Mike Rogers and wife Camilla, of Henderson, Matt Rogers and wife Angie of Henderson, Justin Roberson and wife Ashley of Youngsville, NC, Morgan Roberson and friend John Cash of Henderson, Beth Pugh and husband Curtis of Stovall, NC, and Colin Roberson of Greenville, NC; his grandchildren, Lauren Thorpe and husband Tyler of Chapel Hill, NC, Megan Rogers of Henderson, Cameron Rogers of Henderson, Bret Rogers of Henderson, Leigh Talley of Henderson, Matthew Cash of Henderson, and the most recent “light of his life” Ty Roberson of Youngsville, NC; two brothers, H.B. Rogers of Raleigh, NC and Steve Rogers and wife Shirley of Hampstead, NC; his mother- and father-in-law, Betty and Jim Johnson of Henderson; sister-in-law, Amy Johnson of Henderson; nieces, Katie Steg and Holly Steg, both of Henderson; nephew Christopher Steg of Henderson; brother-in-law, Jimmy Johnson of New York, NY; and longtime family friend, Myrtle Lloyd of Henderson.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Rena “Bebe” Perry and a brother, Gary Rogers.
The family will receive friends Sunday from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., in the Parlor at First United Methodist Church.  All other times, they will be at the home, 2039 Valley View Drive, Henderson.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Jerry Stainback, J.H. Hughes, John Zollicoffer, Mike Satterwhite, Donnie Pergerson, Charles Davis, Gene Edmundson, J. Henry Banks, and Boyd Sturges.  Members of the 9th Judicial District Bar will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Flowers will be accepted; or memorials may be made to the church or charity of one’s choice.

FRANKLINTON — Beloved wife, mother, daughter and sister.
Surviving are her husband, Edward Phillips; twin daughters, DeAnna Brooks and Crystal Phillips; brother, Richard Watkins; father, Herald Ellis; and stepmother, Mozelle Ellis; aunt to Hannah Watkins, Emily Watkins, Timmy Watkins, Hailey Watkins, James Watkins and Amanda Phillips.
