DURHAM
Milton Lee (BB) Blackburn
DURHAM — Mr. Milton Lee (BB) Blackburn, died at Durham Regional Hospital at 1:25 a.m. on Thursday, February 28, 2013. He was 81 years old.
He served in the U.S. Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. He retired from Overnite Transport after 39 years of service.  He attended the Old Fashion Tabernacle Church.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Ruth Blackburn; two sons, Johnny Blackburn Sr. and wife, Brenda, Jerry Blackburn; two brothers, Lambert Blackburn, Curtis Blackburn; and one sister, Alene Simmons; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Hudson Funeral Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Morris Westbrook and the Rev. Bill Lawrence. Burial with military honors will be in held in Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Joseph Walker Garrard II
DURHAM - Joseph Walker Garrard II, 97, died at 1:00 a.m. on Thursday, February 28, 2013 at his home.
Mr. Garrard was born in Durham County on February 11, 1916, a son of Isaac Marion Garrard and Lonie Grey Sanford. He was preceded in death by his wife, Minnie Boddie Green; his son, Isaac Marion Garrard II; his sister, Lucille G. Dunnagan; his two brothers, John T. Garrard and Robert S. Garrard.
He founded Garrard Sausage Company and with the assistance of his son, accomplished widespread distribution of its products.   He retired at the age of 70 and began to enjoy leisure time on the golf courses of The Villages, Florida and in and around Durham. He developed many friendships during his long and full life and treasured all of them. He delighted in telling stories and was a master at wit and communication. He was a member of Grey Stone Baptist Church.
He is survived by two daughters, Marie G. Kolodij and her husband, Roman, Luanne G. Holland and her husband, Jimmy; three granddaughters, Lauren Jones, Jennifer Hall and Rachel Holland; two grandsons, Joseph Garrard III and Dillon Holland; five great grandchildren, Neah and Cailyn Garrard, Carson and Emory Jones, and Luke Hall. He is also survived by Salle Elizabeth Bell who shared his professional work and was a personal family friend for over 50 years.
Friends may visit from 6-8 p.m. Saturday evening at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.
Funeral Service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday in the Chapel of Hall-Wynne Funeral Service with the Rev. Dr. Clay Waters and Rev. Malbert Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Maplewood Cemetery.

Theodore “The’“ Johnson
DURHAM – Funeral services for Theodore “The’“ Johnson, 83, will be held at 12 noon Saturday at Community Baptist Church, 4821 Barbee Road. Family visitation, 30 minutes prior to service. Masonic rites and family visitation will also be held on Friday night from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the church.
He was a 1949 graduate of Hillside High School and a U.S. Army veteran.
He was a retired 45 years employee of Duke Medical Center. He was also a school bus monitor with the Durham Public Schools.
He attended White Rock Baptist Church as a youngster and later joined Community Baptist Church.
He was well-known in the Masonic community and was a member of Doric Lodge #28, PHA, Durham Consistory #218, PHA and Zafa Temple #176, PHA.
Survivors include his loving and devoted wife of 59 years, Gladys Brooks Johnson; one son, Alfred Johnson; two sisters, Alice Johnson Davis and Teresa Johnson Daye (Paul); step-siblings, Christopher Johnson and Geneva Johnson; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; special brother and sister, Edward and Ruby Laster; sister-in-law, Mary Pinckney (Joseph); brothers-in-law, John Ross, Nathaniel Richardson and Leo Davis.
Viewing, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday at Fisher Funeral Parlor.


Laura V. Langley
DURHAM - Laura V. Langley, 85, born August 8, 1927, in Granville County to the late Jasper Green and Arie Crews.
Laura departed her life on Friday, February 22, 2013 in Duke Medical Center. She is survived by her husband, George E. Langley, of the home. 
Visitation with the family will be held at 11 a.m. at the church, and funeral service will start at 12 noon at Union Baptist Church, 904 N. Roxboro St, Saturday, March 2, 2013.

Patricia Ann Richardson
DURHAM - Patricia Ann Richardson, age 67, died on Saturday at Hock Family Pavilion.

Allan Thomas Summers Sr.
DURHAM - Mr. Allan Thomas Summers Sr. transitioned to his heavenly home on February 25, 2013. He was born on June 9, 1932 to the late Joseph and Bessie Edwards Summers. A lifelong Durham resident, Allan was a 1958 graduate of Hillside High School. He also attended North Carolina Central College, now known as North Carolina Central University. He served in the US Air Force from 1950-1953 and the US Air Force Reserve from 1954-1958. He retired from Duke University in 1996 after 36 years of employment. Prior to retirement, Allan had been a research technician in the Duke University Department of Pathology.
He leaves to cherish his memories his wife of 56 years, Pearline; his daughter, Syvil (Clarence) Burke of Durham; his son, Allan (Rita) Summers Jr. of Knightdale; four grandchildren, Cedric Burke, Mia burke and Larry Keith Jr. of Durham, and Marcus Summers of Rocky Mount; two great grandchildren, Jordan and Jaylin Summers of Rocky Mount; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Allan Summers will be held on Saturday, March 2 at 1 p.m. at North East Baptist Church, 3200 Block of Apex Hwy., with Reverend Wesley Elam Sr. officiating and Reverend Clarence Burke as eulogist. The family will greet friends beginning at 12 noon prior to the service. Viewing will also take place at that time.

Louise Knight Tilley
DURHAM - Mrs. Louise Knight Tilley, 91, passed away Thursday, February 28, 2013 at Durham Regional Hospital. Mrs. Tilley was born in Durham Co. to the late Harvey Wilson Knight and Margaret Wood Knight. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Tilley; son, Larry Tilley and grandson, Jason Tilley. Louise was a member at Braggtown Baptist Church.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda Tilley; son, Steve Tilley; sisters, Myrtle Brown, Jean Hicks; grandson, Jeff Tilley (Sherri); and great-grandchildren, Jodi and Alex Tilley.
Family will receive friends Friday, 6 to 8 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home in Durham. A funeral service will be held Saturday, 11 a.m. at Clements Funeral Chapel with Rev. Norman Stallings officiating. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery.

Leroy James Jones
GRAHAM — Mr. Leroy James Jones, son of the late Zora Banks Jones and Alfred Jones, was born November 26, 1926 in Crowley, Louisiana.
He departed this life on Tuesday, February 26, 2013 at the VA Hospital, Durham, NC.
He is survived by his wife, Priscilla W. Jones, of the home.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, March 3, 2013 at First Baptist Church, Chapel Hill, NC at 3:30 p.m.

Viola F. Hairston
CHAPEL HILL — Ms. Viola F. Hairston went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, February 24, 2013 at the age of 93.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2013 at First Baptist Church, Chapel Hill, at 1 p.m. Family visitation one hour before the funeral at the church. Burial, Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery.

Elizabeth “Lib” Riley Morrison
GREENSBORO — Mrs. Elizabeth “Lib” Riley Morrison, 96, of Greensboro, died Wednesday, February 27, 2013 at Well Spring Retirement Community, where she was a resident.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, 2 p.m. at the Well Spring Richardson Auditorium by Rev. John Akers. A private committal service will be held at St. Francis Episcopal Church Columbarium, prior to the service.
Lib was born May 22, 1916 in Durham, the daughter of Samuel Oscar Riley and Mary Elizabeth Covington Riley, and step-mother, Pearl Beavers Riley.
In addition to her parents, Lib was preceded in death by her husbands, James Heilig and Edmund Morrison; and her sister in law, Ruth Morrison.
Surviving are her cousins, Margaret Lawrence and Betty Lawrence Huckabee of Durham and Mary Ann Lawrence Austin of Greenville, SC.; step cousins, Howard Raymond Weeks Jr. and wife, Ginger, and Patricia Weeks Johnson, all of Charlotte, and Margaret Weeks Redcay of Lubbock, TX; nephews, James Armfield and Claude Heath Armfield Jr., both of Marietta, GA.
Mrs. Morrison grew up in Durham where she attended public schools and was a graduate of Duke University where she received her master’s degree in education. She taught in the Greensboro Public Schools for 28 years, retiring in 1973. Lib was a member of St. Francis Episcopal Church, where she served on the Altar Guild for 30 years. Other activities include membership in the Euterpe Club, Greensboro Opera Association, Opera Companions, The Forum, Musical Arts Guild, English Speaking Union, Piedmont Bird Club, Greensboro Historical Museum and Guild, and Mobile Meals.
Friends will be received following the service at Well Spring.
