Bertha Yates McDougald 
DURHAM — Bertha Yates McDougald, 75, departed her life on November 30, 2012.
She leaves behind her children, six daughters; eight sons; 36 grandchildren; 55 great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; five brothers; two sisters; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends.
Visitation will be at Holloway Memorial Funeral Home Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. and funeral services will be at Mt. Calvary United Church of Christ Thursday at 1 p.m.

Louise Waller
DURHAM — Mrs. Louise Waller, 90, died Sunday at Carver Living Center. Mrs. Waller was born in Durham Co., the daughter of the late Calvin Chester Waller and the late Betty Lucretia James Waller. She was a graduate of Braggtown High School and Croft Business School. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Liggett & Myers Tobacco Co. for 40 years. Mrs. Waller was a long time member of McMannen United Methodist Church, serving on many committees of the church and was a member of the church choir. She served as president of the UMW of McMannen for eight years. Mrs. Waller was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby Waller; and children, Betty Anne Nance and Ricky Waller.
Mrs. Waller is survived by a son, James Calvin Waller and wife, Pattie, of Durham; a daughter, Bobbie Blalock and husband, Tommy, of Durham; sisters, Alma Williams and Sylvia Holder and husband, Arthur, all of Durham; brothers, John Waller of Durham and Earl Waller and wife, Shelby, of Garden City, SC; and grandchildren, Elizabeth Ward, Phillip Waller, Lorrie Dove, Tommy Blalock III, Kimberly Buff, Jimmy Waller and Michael Waller; and 13 great grandchildren. 
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at McMannen United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ed Priestaf officiating. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home in Durham and other times at the home of her daughter at 6419 Pondview Lane, Durham.
Flowers are acceptable or memorial contributions may be made to McMannen United Methodist Church, 4102 Neal Rd., Durham, NC 27705.

Virginia Archer Blakeslee
11/27/21 – 11/30/12

PITTSBORO — Virginia Archer Blakeslee, 91 years young, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, died Nov 30, 2012 in her Pittsboro home with her daughter and son-in-law at her side. She is formerly of Raleigh and Manchester, Conn. She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore Robert Blakeslee II; and son, Theodore Robert Blakeslee III. She earned degrees from Mt Holyoke and Trinity College. She had a passion for family, friends, theater, teaching, reading, music and UNC Tar Heels.
Throughout her life, she gave so much and asked for so little. She is dearly missed – her smile, her laugh, her caring. She is soaring with angels now. The family especially thanks the staff of UNC Hospice for the loving care they provided in her final weeks.
She is survived, loved and missed by her devoted family: her daughter and son-in-law, Meg and Bobby Summey, of the home; daughter-in-law, Rena Blakeslee, Hillsborough, NJ; and grandchildren, Katherine Bruno (Mike), Matawan, NJ; Tiffany Otto (Bill), Fort Drum, NY; and Rich Blakeslee, Hillsborough, NJ (Anna). Also surviving are grand-dogs, Jessie and Dash; and grand-cat, Kasey of the home; plus great-grandchildren, Michael, Katherine, and Richard Otto, and Anthony, Dominic and Gabriela Bruno.

Denise M. Johnson

CHAPEL HILL — Denise M. Johnson, a resident of Carol Woods Retirement Center in Chapel Hill, died on November 26, 2012.
Denise was born in England in 1918. During World War II, she worked at the House of Commons in London and for a year worked in South Africa before coming to the United States in 1948. Denise lived and worked in Houston as an editor in geological research for Exxon's Geologic Research Organization. In 1965, she moved to New England where she worked for the Newton Massachusetts School System while gaining her Masters in Science Education at Wheelock College in Boston. For several years she worked as Editor of Software Manuals for Digital Equipment Corporation.
For 15 years she served as Chair of the Trustees of the Wadleigh Memorial Library in Milford, New Hampshire. In 1992, she was named Library Trustee of the year by the New Hampshire Library Trustees' Association. Denise served as a volunteer and docent at the Currier Gallery of Art in Manchester, New Hampshire and Executive Chair of the Guild of Volunteers. She was interested in community affairs and local and international affairs. She learned French as a child and German while staying in Germany immediately before World War II. She moved to North Carolina in 2000.
She is survived by her Goddaughter, Patricia Rhoades of Holliston, Massachusetts. 
A memorial service will be held at 10 o'clock a.m, on Monday, December 10, 2012 at The Church of the Holy Family, 200 Hayes Road, Chapel Hill.

Violet Edmonds McCullock
HILLSBOROUGH — Mrs. Violet Edmonds McCullock, 79, died peacefully at her home Sunday morning. A native of Alamance County, she was the daughter of the late Columbus D. Edmonds Sr. and Rosie Jones Edmonds. Violet was of  the Baptist faith. She was a homemaker and loved to bake for friends and relatives, and always caring for others’ needs. The family would like to give special thank yous to hospice, nurses, and all her caregivers who were by her side. 
Mrs. McCullock is survived by her two granddaughters, Melony and Bailey McCullock of Graham; and a sister, Bettie E. Edwards of Butner. She is preceded in death by her husband, Fred McCullock; and her son, Don McCullock of Cedar Grove. 
A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. at Mt. Zion Church Cemetery today, December 4 by the Rev. Fredrick Bunts.   Memorials may be sent to Hospice and Palliative Care of Alamance-Caswell, 914 Chapel Hill Rd., Burlington, NC 27215.

Dolores Janett Barbour

CLAYTON — Ms. Dolores Janett Barbour, 81, died Saturday, December 1, 2012, at Rex Hospital. Ms. Barbour was born in Durham Co., the daughter of the late Claud Almon Barbour and the late Alice Leoney Beasley Barbour. She was preceded in death by a brother, Wallace Barbour.
Graveside service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Maplewood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home in Durham.

Bobby Darwood Hawley
BROOKSVILLE, FLA. — Bobby Darwood Hawley, age 78, of Brooksville passed away Thursday, November 22, 2012 at HPH Hospice Care Center in Brooksville. Born in Durham, he came to this area five years ago from Bracey, Va. He retired from the U.S. Navy and was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association and the Mobile Patrol in the Highpoint Subdivision.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Beth Hawley; son, William Henry Hawley of Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.; sister, Gaynell Pope; and granddaughter, Jannah Rose Hawley.
A graveside service with Military Honors will take place 11 a.m. Thursday, December 6, 2012 at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, Fla.
