Barbara Ann Lewis Brooks
DURHAM — Barbara Ann Lewis Brooks, the daughter of Robert and Arnetta Turrentine Lewis, was born on March 26, 1943. She departed this life on July 31, 2014 at Duke Medical Center after a very brief illness.
She is survived by her husband of fifty-three years, Nathaniel Brooks Sr., of the home; a son, Daryl Brooks of Durham, NC and a “special son,” Rodney Rodgers of Timberlake, NC; grandchildren, Cameron, Daryl Jr., Nicholas, and Chyna; an extended family of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins, and other family and friends.
A memorial service will be held on August 9, 2014 at Mt. Calvary United Church of Christ, Rev. Cheryl McNair officiating. The visitation will begin at 12:00 noon and a memorial service will follow at 1:00.

Artelia Tennesee Bryant
DURHAM — Artelia Tennesee Bryant, 93, of Durham passed away peacefully on Monday, August 4, 2014 at her residence. Born in Phoebus, Va. (Hampton), Mrs. Bryant was the daughter of John Jesse Tennessee and Artelia Darden Tennessee. She is survived by her spouse of nearly 70 years, R. Kelly Bryant Jr.; children, Sandra Bryant-Yubwannie and Robert K. Bryant III; grandchildren, Keith Bryant, Korey Bryant, Raevin Bryant, Mykel Bryant-Moore and Yohanna Yubwannie ; 4 great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Maggie P. Bryant; and a host of other dear family members.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Thursday, August 7, at White Rock Baptist Church located at 3400 Fayetteville Street, Durham, NC, with Pastor Reginald Van Stephens officiating. A wake will be held for receiving friends on Wednesday, August 6, from 7 to 9p.m.

Roosevelt Boyd, Sr.
DURHAM — Mr. Roosevelt Boyd, Sr. was born on September 4, 1947 in Roxboro, NC. He departed this life on August 3, 2014 at the age of 66.
He is survived by his wife Monicah Wambua, two brothers and seven sisters. He also leaves behind eight children, three stepchildren, fourteen grandkids, and four great-grandkids.
Funeral services will be held at Holloway Memorial Funeral Home on Thursday, August 7, 2014 at 11:00 am and the viewing will be from 10:00 am to 11:00 am.

James Edward Floyd
DURHAM — James Edward Floyd was born to the late Alvester Floyd and Lillie Mae Thompson on April 20, 1934 in Lumberton, NC. He was affectionately known as "Pop" to family and friends. James E. Floyd slept away peacefully on Wednesday, July 30, 2014 at Duke University Hospital.
He leaves behind to cherish his memories four daughters, one sister, three nieces, eleven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild.
Services will be Friday, August 7, 2014, at Holloway Memorial Funeral Home; viewing at 1:00 pm with services at 2:00pm.

Golan Samson Frazier, Sr.
DURHAM — Mr. Golan Samson Frazier, Sr., age 90, of Durham, NC, passed away on August 1, 2014, at the Veterans Administration Community Living Center in Washington, DC. His funeral services will be on Saturday, August 9, 2014 at 11 am at St. Joseph’s A.M.E. Church located at 2521 Fayetteville Street, Durham, NC. There will be a viewing one hour before the services. Beverly Victoria Mercer Griffin
DURHAM — Beverly Victoria Mercer Griffin, 52, departed her life on August 3, 2014.
She leaves behinds her daughter, K’sandra Mercer Griffin; one granddaughter, Kayla Lloyd; her father, Thomas Hardnett, Sr.; seven brothers and three sisters.
A visitation will be held at 11:00 am followed by a memorial service at 12 noon on Friday at Union Baptist Church.

Crystal "Darcel" Nichols
DURHAM — Crystal "Darcel" Nichols, 51, departed her life on August 1, 2014.
She is survived by her mother, Minnie Nichols Lyons; a lifetime partner, Corey Owens; four children; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three sisters and one brother.
Funeral Services will be held at Northside Baptist Church, Durham NC, on Friday, August 8, 2014; visitation at 12 noon with the service following at 1pm.

Carrie Mae Parker
DURHAM — Funeral services for Carrie Mae Parker will be held Friday, August 8, at 2 p.m. at Fisher Funeral Parlor. The family visitation will be held 30 minutes prior to service.
Survivors include a son, Leroy Harris; 3 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Dr. Shabeg Singh Sandhu
DURHAM — Dr. Shabeg Singh Sandhu, born December 4, 1937, passed suddenly and too soon on August 2nd, 2014. He was born in Lahore and lost both his parents by the time he was eight years old. Despite struggling as an orphan, he obtained his undergraduate and master's degrees with honors from Punjab University. He was also a well-known scholar in Sikhi writings. In the early 1960s, he met with then Prime Minister Nehru along with the Sikh leader at the time to discuss Sikh interests in Punjab.
He obtained his PhD in genetics in 23 months from Purdue University and led a distinguished career as a professor and researcher. He traveled around the world representing the United States Environmental Protection Agency as well as the United Nations as a speaker and distinguished Delegate of International task forces. Later in his career he became a successful developer.
His greatest joy and gifts were his unwavering humility, compassion, wit, and devotion to helping others. His unique ability to find common ground regardless of cultural, racial, and socioeconomic differences was unparalleled. A devoted Rotarian and gardener, he leaves his life partner and wife, Surinder; three children, Dr. Aman Sandhu, Navi Sandhu J.D., Dr. Ripple Shabeg Singh Sandhu; two granddaughters, Noor Shabeg Singh Sandhu and Ria Sandhu; his beloved extended family and his friends. He will be missed and is loved very much. His integrity, compassion and selfless giving will live on forever.
A memorial service will be held on August 9th at 3 pm at the Sikh Gurdwara of North Carolina on Banner Street in Durham, NC. In lieu of flowers please donate to the Research Triangle Rotary Club’s polio eradication efforts.

Gloria Jean Streeter
DURHAM — Ms. Gloria Jean Streeter passed on Friday, August 1, 2014. The funeral service will be held Friday, August 8, 2014, at 11:00am at Community Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at 10:00am one hour prior to the service at the church. Services are entrusted to Scarborough and Hargett Funeral Home, Inc.

Lunette Villines
MEBANE — Lunette Villines, 90, of Mebane, NC, died on Sunday, August 3, 2014, at Hospice Home of Alamance in Burlington, NC.
Surviving are daughters, Yvonne Villines, Ernestine Thompson, Queen Bradsher (Lacy) and Gloria Villines; six grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted Thursday, August 7, 2104 at 2:00PM at Lattisville Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will be in the Lattisville Grove Memorial Garden. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church.
Public viewing will be held Wednesday, August 6, 2014 from 12:00PM until 7:00PM in the Chavis Parker Funeral Home Chapel.

Dorothy Link Choate
CHAPEL HILL — Dorothy Link Choate was born December 19, 1919 in Charlotte, NC and died on August 4, 2014 in Chapel Hill, NC. She graduated from Queens College in Charlotte. In 1963, Dorothy and her husband, Herman Crowell Choate, moved to Chapel Hill. Dorothy retired from the University of North Carolina. She is survived by her daughters, Suzanne Richie and Christine Wend of Chapel Hill, grandson Scott Richie and granddaughter Kelli Richie of Chapel Hill. Walker’s Funeral Home of Chapel Hill is honored to serve the Choate family.

Lily Long Harper Hall
LEXINGTON, S.C. — Lily Long Harper Hall, 77, formerly of Butner, NC, died peacefully at her home following a valiant and brave battle with cancer on August 2, 2014. Lily is preceded in death by her parents, Nelson Harper and Martha Harper Morris.
Lily graduated from Leggett High School, Edgecombe Cty, NC, in 1955. She also graduated from Flora McDonald College in Red Springs, NC. Lily worked as an Asst. Home Economics Agent (working with the 4-H clubs) in Pitt Cty, NC. It was there that she met her husband Robert. She worked in Halifax Cty for a short period of time. They moved to Butner, Granville Cty, NC in 1964 and she went to work with Vocational Rehabilitation for the State of NC. In 2006 Lily and Bob moved to Lexington, SC, to be near their son Robert, daughter-in-law Lynn, and the apple of their eyes, grand-daughter Rebecca. Lily was a longtime member of Community United Methodist Church in Butner, NC.
Lily is survived by her husband of 53 years, Robert Hall, Sr. of Lexington, SC; son, Robert Hall and wife Lynn and granddaughter, Rebecca, all of West Columbia, SC. Lily is also survived by her sister, Linda Tucker of Momeyer, NC; and her nieces and nephews, Meredith Tucker Bass, Timmy Tucker, Bobby Lee Tucker, Lara Rose, Pam Bobbitt, Kenny Hall, Cindy Hall, Kay Dee Hall, Sherry Hall and Joshua Hall; numerous great-nieces and -nephews and many beloved cousins.
