Richard Carol Smith
ROXBORO — Richard Carol Smith, 74, of 79 Smith-Hill Lane went home to be with Jesus on July 30, 2014.
He was born in Cluster Springs, VA to the late Dickie Adam Smith, Sr. and Evelyn Smith. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Shirley Smith. He is also survived by two sons, Rickey Smith, Sr. and friend Mary Joe Daniel, of Roxboro, and Randy Smith & wife Kris, of Roxboro; three grandchildren, Rickey Smith, Jr., Brandon Smith, and Angela Newcomb; one great-granddaughter, Alana Faith Walker. He is also survived by a large family of brothers and sisters, Gladys Loftis and husband Jim, Dickie Smith, Jr. and wife Hazel, Earl Smith and wife Gail, Lester Smith and wife Gale, and Ronald Smith, all of Roxboro, and one sister, Joyce Lamberth of Atlanta, GA.
Mr. Smith was also a longtime business owner in Roxboro, having been co-owner of Roxboro Glass, and sole proprietor of Smith Glass Center for many years, along with various auto body shops in the 60s & 70s. His business on Ridge Road still exists today, under new ownership, once he retired.
Mr. Smith was also a musician and singer from an early age. He played guitar alongside his father, who played banjo. He was also a founding member of The Faith Quartet, which played regularly in local churches and functions, sometimes as far away as West Virginia, for over 20 years, singing Southern Gospel music. He later went back to his love of Bluegrass Gospel, along with his brothers, and helped form The Smith Brothers group. If he could have taken his guitar to Heaven, I'm sure he'd go through those pearly gates with it slung around his neck, looking to sing a song for his Heavenly Father!
