Sara McKee Samonds Harris
DURHAM - Sara died Sunday, October 6th, at Duke Hospital after several months of declining health. She was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, on July 25th, 1929. She moved to Durham at an early age where she spent the remainder of her life. She graduated from Durham High School and Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia.
Sara was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Carl Nelson Harris; and her brothers, John Patrick Samonds and David Alexander Samonds. Surviving are her devoted daughters, Darian Harris Jaynes Henne (Kevin) of Winter Haven, Florida, and Dawn Harris Ruff (William) of Franklin, Tennessee; her adored grandchildren, Evan Arthur Jaynes and Annie McLendon Jaynes of Winter Haven, Florida, and Sara Caitlin Ruff and Hannah Dawn Ruff of Franklin,Tennessee. She is survived by her sister, Janet Samonds Holderness (William Transou) of Durham, and many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
Sara gave generously of her time and talents to her community. She was a great supporter of the arts, especially opera, the symphony, and the wealth of choral music available in Durham and other cities. She was a talented knitter and stitcher and a world traveler. She loved playing bridge and was a voracious reader. She was the family’s favorite chef.
Honoring her wishes, there will be no funeral or memorial service. Her close friends and family will gather at a later date to celebrate her life. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Duke University Chapel or a charity of the donor's choice.
Her family wishes to thank the doctors and nurses of Duke Hospital for their incredible skill and their warm humanity. She had elegant care at Duke.

Faye Althea Hewett Tilley
DURHAM — Mrs. Faye Althea Hewett Tilley, 81, of Durham, died on Thursday, October 10, 2013. She grew up in Brunswick County, NC and lived her adults years in Durham. She is the daughter of the late Weldon Dudley Hewett and Edith Mooney Hewett. She was a retired seamstress with Royal Home Fashions. She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, her cat "Frazier" and traveling. Her husband, George S. Tilley, Jr. and a brother, Roger Hewett preceded her in death.
She is survived by her son, George Edward Tilley of Wilmington; two daughters, Shelby Tilley and Gloria Hill (Roger), both of Durham; grandchildren, Kristen Foster (Dave), Ivy Hill, Bryan Hill; and a great-grandson, Erik Foster.
Funeral services will be held on Monday at 12 noon at Grace Lutheran Church. Burial will in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 11 a.m. to 12 noon, prior to the service, in the Grace Lutheran Church sanctuary.

James Milton McGowan
CHAPEL HILL — James Milton McGowan, 77, died October 9, 2013 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
Mr. McGowan was born May 13, 1936 in Haywood County, NC to Leslie E. McGowan and Julia Emma Weaver. He was a retired accountant.
Jimmy is survived by his wife of 51 ½ years, Judy Ward McGowan; and their two sons, James Martin McGowan, of Chapel Hill and Randall Keith McGowan with his wife, Terri, of Pittsboro, NC; his brother, Lindy A. McGowan and wife, Jackie of Tampa, FL; his sister, Nancy M. Greene of Clyde, NC; and his two granddaughters, Katie Lynn McGowan and Ashlyn Brooke McGowan; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers and a sister.
The service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday October 13, 2013 from the graveside at Cedar Grove United Methodist Church cemetery, with the Reverend Leah Skaggs presiding. The family will receive friends following the service in the fellowship hall of the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made out to: Make-A-Wish Foundation of Eastern NC, 2880 Slater Rd. Suite 105, Morrisville, NC 27560.

Clarence Cates
HILLSBOROUGH - Clarence Cates, 71, son of the late Hattie Daye Cates and Walter Cates, born May 20, 1942, died on Thursday, October 10, 2013, at Laurels of Chatham in Pittsboro, NC.
The funeral will be conducted 2 p.m., Monday in Glenn Grove Baptist Church.
Visitation: 1:30 until 2 p.m. in the church. Burial in Markham Memorial Gardens, 4826 Trent Drive, Chapel Hill, NC 27517.
Surviving are brothers, George Cates (Virginia) of Pittsboro, NC, Walter Cates (Bonnie) of Person County and Johnny Cates (Ruby) of Hillsborough, NC.
Public viewing: Sunday, 10 a.m. until 6 p.m. in Chavis-Parker Funeral Home.

William F. Grice Sr.
CARRBORO — William F. Grice Sr. passed away peacefully at the Brian Ctr. in Durham on Wednesday Oct. 9, 2013. He was born Nov. 25, 1923. 
William was educated in Richmond County, NC and married Mary Crabtree Hines of Carrboro in 1953. He retired after a career with Liggett Myers.
He loved his family and playing Crazy eights and going fishing with Mr. Henry Wilson. 
He was preceded in death by his parents, Zack and Lucy Grice; his wife, Mary Hines Grice; daughter, Agnes Hines Browning; and sisters, Elizabeth, Lucy Mae, Evelyn, Elmire, Nellie, Lizza and Anne.
William leaves three daughters, Theresa H. Riggsbee, Dianne H. Davis, Sharon G. Allen; two sons, William Grice Jr., W. Wesley Grice; 13 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and beloved nieces and nephews. 
Visitation will be held Sunday, October 13, 2013 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Walker's Funeral Home, 120 W. Franklin St., Chapel Hill, NC. 
Funeral services will be held Monday, October 14, 2013 at 2 p.m. at Walker's Funeral Home Chapel.
Interment will follow immediately at Westwood Cemetery, Carrboro.

Helen Gayle Hamel Honse
CHAPEL HILL — Helen Gayle Hamel Honse, 103, passed away on October 4, 2013 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina at the home she shared with her daughter, Mary Lu Salmon. Gayle was born on January 2, 1910 in Mount Pleasant Pa. to the late Jessie Hays Hamel and the late William Karl Hamel. She grew up in Laurelville Pennsylvania and graduated from Ramsey High school and Slippery Rock College.
Gayle was preceded in death by her husband, Jay Goodwin Honse Sr.; and five siblings: Karl Hamel, John Hamel, Dana Hamel, Ruth Scheidemantle, and Lillin Hoke.
She was an elementary school teacher in Pennsylvania in the Mount Pleasant area schools and also at Ruffsdale Elementary. She loved her students and in later years enjoyed telling stories about them and the rural schools she taught in. After living in Pennsylvania and raising her family she moved to Greensboro, North Carolina and then Chapel Hill, North Carolina to be close to her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was always interested in everything the children were doing and loved seeing and talking with them.
She is survived by her daughter, Mary Lu Salmon of Chapel Hill, NC; and her son, Jay G Honse Jr. and wife, Betty of Fincastle VA; two grandsons, Jay G Honse III of Midlothian, VA and Jon Bradburn Honse and wife, Jenea of Youngsville, NC. Great grandchildren include: Rosslyn and Lillian Honse of Midlothian, VA, Helen Honse, Jack Honse, Peter Honse and Charles Honse of Youngsville, NC.
She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, October 27, 2013 at Carrboro United Methodist Church, 200 Hillsborough Road, Carrboro, North Carolina 27510. 919-942-1223.

David Alexander Mayse
HILLSBOROUGH – David Alexander Mayse left us on October 10 due to a tragic car accident. He was 19 and graduated from Partnership Academy. He was awarded the Principal’s Award of which he was very proud.
He went to heaven to be with his father, Raeford Mayse, who preceded him. David joined him on his birthday. Happy Birthday Raeford.
He left behind his mother, Gisela Mayse; birth mother, Tina White; sisters, Morgan, Becky, Peggy, Pam; and brother, Ronald, as well as many cousins and friends. He will be missed.
Visitation will be 3-5 p.m., Sunday at Walker’s Funeral Home in Hillsborough. A memorial service will be 3 p.m., Tuesday, October 15 at Mt. Hermon Baptist Church, 4511 Old NC 10, Durham, NC 27705. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Mt. Hermon Baptist Church.

George Wynn
CHAPEL HILL - George Wynn, 42, son of the late Alice Alston and George Wynn Sr., died Monday, October 7, 2013, at UNC Hospitals
The funeral will be conducted 1 p.m., Tuesday in White Rock Holy Church, 932 White Rock Church Road, Chapel Hill, NC. Family visitation: 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. in the church.
Survivors are his partner, Stephanie Nicholson; sisters, Patricia Wynn, Teresa Wynn; and brother, Donald Wynn; father, George Wynn Sr.; aunts and uncles, Talbert, Rosco, Andrew Alston; and aunt, Flossie Alston. Public viewing: Monday, 10 a.m. in Chavis-Parker Funeral Home.

Kenyatta Pulliam
COLUMBUS, GA — Kenyatta Pulliam, age 31, formerly of Hillsborough, NC died October 7, 2013 in Columbus, Ga.
The funeral will be Saturday 2 p.m. at Chavis-Parker Funeral Home Chapel. Visitation will be Saturday 1 p.m. at the Funeral Home. Burial will be in Bradsher Cemetery.
Survivors are one daughter, Kenisha Pulliam; two sons: Taylor Hamlett and Camden Hardy, all of Columbus, Ga.; mother, Brenda Pulliam of Columbus, Ga.; sisters: Shena Pulliam of Columbus, Ga. and Shenika Pulliam of Hillsborough, NC.
