John Lenning Mashburn Jr.
DURHAM - Mr. John Lenning Mashburn Jr., 85, of Durham died on Sunday, July 28, 2013. He was the son of the late John Lenning Mashburn Sr. and Eva Harden Mashburn. He retired from Overnight Trucking as a truck driver.
He is survived by two sons, Keith Mashburn (Natalie) of Rougemont, J.B. Mashburn (Donna) of Durham; two daughters, Wanda Summey (Spencer) of Hillsborough and Yvonne Scarlett (Ron) of Hillsborough; one sister, Betty Cockrell of Durham; four grandchildren, Amanda Scarlett, Adam Scarlett, Andrew Scarlett and Nikki Mashburn.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Hudson Funeral Chapel. Pastor Betty Bunn will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m., one hour prior to the service at Hudson Funeral Home and other times at the home. Flowers are acceptable. Online condolences can be made at www.hudsonfuneralhome.com.
Kinazia Leshea Newman
DURHAM - Funeral services for Miss Kinazia Leshea Newman (8), of Durham, N.C., will be conducted on Tuesday at 12 noon from Bethel Tabernacle United Holy Church, and the interment will follow in the Glennview Memorial Gardens. The family will meet with their friends one hour before the funeral service.
Survivors are her mother, Ms. Tameka Jackson; her father, Mr. Christopher McNeill; two brothers, Mr. Debron McNeill, Mr. Omaree Owens; five uncles, five aunts, grandparents, Ms. Tammie Jackson (Samantha), Mr. Rodney Feaster (Takenya), Ms. Carrie Newman; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Peggy Elaine Johnson Tapp
DURHAM — Peggy Elaine Johnson Tapp, 69, of Durham, died Saturday, July 27, 2013, at her home. Mrs. Tapp was born in Alexandria, VA, to the late Lillie Mae Ellis Benton and Oscar David Johnson. She was a homemaker and wonderful mother who will be missed by her family.
Surviving are three daughters, Christy T. McDonald, Sherry T. Buchanan and husband, Waldo, and Lorrie T. Powell and husband, Melvin, all of Durham; a son, Harold David Allen Tapp of Carrboro; a sister, Joyce King of Rougemont; two brothers, Shelton Johnson of Henderson and David Glenn Johnson of Durham; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Clements Funeral Chapel officiated by Pastor Jason Vernon. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Clements Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Joshua Williams, Ray Williams, Steven Connolly, Samuel Parker, Brian King, Mike Adams, Lee Davis and Grey Holloman.

Christine Riggsbee Trice
CHAPEL HILL— Christine Riggsbee Trice, daughter of the late Fonnie and Eva Riggsbee, was born June 23, 1928 and departed this life on Saturday, July 27, 2013.
Surviving are two nieces, Delois Harding, Winston Salem, NC, Joan Spencer, Durham, NC; three nephews, Wallace Council (Millie), Chapel Hill, NC, James Council (Loretta), Durham, NC, Stephen Council (Linda), Chapel Hill, NC; a devoted caregiver (niece-in-law), Mildred Riggsbee, Chapel Hill, NC; 14 great nieces and nephews, and a host of great great nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Service, Tuesday, July 10, at 12 noon at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 530 Lystra Road, Chapel Hill, NC. Viewing at 11:30 a.m.-12 noon.

A. Floyd Hicks Jr.
TIMBERLAKE — A. Floyd Hicks Jr., 87, of Timberlake, passed away on July 27, 2013. Floyd was born October 12, 1925, the son of Albert Floyd Hicks Sr. and Minnie Belle Averette Hicks. He grew up on a farm in Person County, always recounting the hard work, risks, and family tales. One of his proudest stories was about serving for his country. He was a member of the Army Air Corps, 4th Squadron during World War II, serving as a cartographer, mapping war zones over the world. He was an honored veteran all his life, often lamenting the treatment of vets. Upon leaving service, he studied Agriculture at, then, State College. After graduating with a BS in 1949, he married Aleine Jones Hicks that same year. They began a life in Timberlake, serving in many capacities and making dear friends along the way. In 1972, he received a Masters of Science from NC State University in Horticulture, driving weekly to Raleigh for many months. Mr. Hicks was a highly respected teacher of Vocational Agriculture and Horticulture for many years at Helena High School and then at Person High. He then joined the Board of Education as county vocational education director. Many trees around the Person County schools are growing because of him. After retirement, Mr. Hicks set on a real journey of lifelong education. He was a man of much knowledge and skill, always rigging and building and tearing down things to improve his community. He was a lifelong member of Helena UMC, where he served on many committees and as a valued Sunday School Teacher. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather who will be much remembered for his service to his family, his church, his community, and his country.
He is survived by a daughter, Marie Hicks Pulliam and husband, Albert (Beater) Pulliam of Cary, NC; a son, Ray Floyd Hicks and wife, Ginny Rogers Hicks, of Apex, NC; grandsons, Matt Pulliam and wife, Jessica, of Wendell, NC and Michael Hicks of Raleigh, NC; granddaughter, Austin Hicks Pulliam of Cary, NC; great grandson, Zan Pulliam; one brother, Wilton (Toot) Hicks of Roxboro and many loving nieces and nephews of the Hicks-Jones Family.
He was preceded in death by wife, Aleine Hicks; brothers, Ronald, Archie, Harold Hicks; and sister, Ann Whitfield.
The family will receive friends from 6-7:30 p.m. on Monday, July 29 at Brooks and White Funeral Home, Roxboro, NC. A service of remembrance will be Tuesday, July 30 at 11 at Helena UMC in Timberlake, NC. Graveside rites at Person Memorial Cemetery following the service. Memorial contributions may be made to Helena UMC, 290 Helena-Moriah Rd., Timberlake, NC 27583.
Pallbearers will be Berk Jones, Dr. Tim Pearce, Joseph Hicks, Larry Hicks, Larry Oakley, Rick Chambers, John Duncan, and Mark Garrett. Honorary pallbearers will be Ted Webb and Bernard Gentry.
