Marion Boyd
DURHAM - Mr. Marion Boyd, 77, departed this life on Tuesday, July 16, 2013.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Hazel Boyd; two sons, Kelvin W. Brodie Sr. (Joanna) and Marion D. Boyd; one daughter, Quarron L. Boyd; two sisters, Nettie Kirkland and Daisy Seage.
Services will take place on Tuesday, July 23, 2013 at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph AME Church, 2521 Fayetteville Street. A visitation for family and friends will be held one hour prior to the service.
Arrangements are entrusted to Scarborough and Hargett Memorial Chapel and Gardens.


Lillie Mae Bowen Clayton
DURHAM - Mrs. Lillie Mae Bowen Clayton, 81, formerly of Durham, died on Tuesday, July 16, 2013.
Mrs. Clayton was a native of Durham, the daughter of the late Edgar and Thelma Bowen. She was previously employed with the American Tobacco Company and Murdoch Center in Butner. She was preceded in death by her husband, Alvis Clayton.
She is survived by her sons, Monty Clayton and John Clayton; daughters, Wanda Ambrose and Tonya Clayton; brother, Wayne Bowen; two sisters, Ruby Winston and Myrtle Strayhorn; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Chapel. Rev. David Akers will officiate. Burial will be in South Granville Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends on Saturday from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home and other times at 317 28th Street in Butner. Flowers are acceptable. Online condolences can be made at www.hudsonfuneralhome.com.

Louise Hawley Daye
DURHAM - Born on Dec. 8, 1931 in Oxford, NC to the late William and Katherine Bass-Hawley, Mrs. Louise Hawley Daye passed away on July 18, 2013 at Duke Regional Hospital. She was 81 years old. Louise received her education in the Person County Public School System. She was united in holy matrimony September 17, 1945 to Lawrence Daye Jr. From this union, two daughters and four sons were born.
Louise leaves to mourn her loss her husband, Lawrence Daye Jr.; two daughters, JoyceAnn McAdoo (Dr. Harold) of Pinehurst, NC and Elvira (Angel) Bostic (Joe) of Raleigh, NC; four sons, Dexter of Butner, NC, Donnell Daye (Stephanie Barnes), Alexander (fiancé, Dorothy) of Durham, NC and Lawrence III (Bonnie Lee) of Rougemont, NC.
Services will take place on Sunday, July 21, 2013 at Mt. Level Baptist Church, 316 Hebron Rd., at 2:30 p.m. Visitation will begin at 2.
Scarborough and Hargett Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.


Haywood “Pinky” Ellis
BAHAMA - Mr. Haywood “Pinky” Ellis, 80, died Wednesday, July 17, 2013 at Hock Family Pavilion. Mr. Ellis was born in Durham Co., the son of the late Zackary Ellis and the late Vesta Lee Roberts Ellis. Prior to his retirement, he was employed as a Foreman by the Department of Transportation.
Mr. Ellis is survived by his sons, Chuck Ellis, Mark Ellis, Jay Ellis; grandchildren, Haley Gelbert, Blake Ellis, Hunter Ellis, Lacey Ellis, Zackarie Ellis, Jezzi Ellis; great granddaughter, Taya Gelbert; sister, Barbara Garrard; brothers, Harold Ellis, Bobby Ellis, Gene Ellis.
A graveside service will be held 2 p.m., Sunday at Riverview United Methodist Church Cemetery with Rev. Marilyn Shipman officiating. Family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m., Saturday at Clements Funeral Home in Durham.

Mary Ann Harrell
DURHAM — Mary Ann Harrell, 81, died Sunday, July 7, 2013 at Wilson Medical Center in Wilson, N.C. She had been at the coast with family.
A Durham native, Mary Ann was the daughter of the late Stanley C. Harrell and Alberta Boone Harrell. She graduated from Durham High School in 1948 and from Wellsley College in Wellsley, Ma. in 1952. She returned to the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill where she graduated from the School of Journalism. She was a long time resident of Bethesda, Md.
Mary Ann had a long and illustrious career with the National Geographic Magazine in Washington, D.C. from 1958 to 1994. Her work included in-depth invaluable research, which led to the writing and publishing of many geographic books. Mary Ann traveled extensively, both for her profession and enjoyment. As Senior Managing Editor of the Geographic, she received many awards and honors. She was an avid supporter of Carolina basketball.
Mary Ann truly enriched, entertained, and enlightened the lives of her many family members and friends.
She is survived by her three cousins, Bill Boone and Myra Boone Harris, both of Durham, and Stanley Boone of Pittsburgh, Pa.
A graveside funeral service will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2013, at 11 a.m. in Maplewood Cemetery, Section 1. Memorials remembering Mary Ann may be made to the Boone-Harrell Organ Fund at Pilgrim United Church of Christ, 3011 Academy Road, Durham, N.C. 27707.

Shelia Runkle
DURHAM — Shelia Runkle, 63, died peacefully on Sunday, July 14th, 2013. She was born in Portsmouth, Va and lived in Durham for over 35 years.
She was a wonderful mother of six and beloved grandmother of eight. Her life ever evolved around her children, grandchildren, and extended family. Her husband was Mike Runkle. She was actively involved in Therapeutic Horseback Riding for the disabled and the Special Olympics.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary Elva Boyce Alverson; and her father, Worthy Eli Alverson. Survivors include her brothers, Jerald and Steve Alverson; her daughters, Cora Blinsmon and husband, Tim, Naomi Farley and husband, Derek, Robin Rogers and husband, Jeremy, Kelly Watson and husband, Bruce; and her sons, Michael Joseph Runkle and Jeremy Runkle. Her precious grandchildren are Timothy, Juli-Anna, Ray Thomas, Jon Michael, Jacob, Asher, Kaitlyn, and Elijah.
A Celebration of Life service was held on July 18th at 6 p.m. at West Club Blvd/Summit Church campus.

Marian J. Brooks
CHAPEL HILL — Marian J. Brooks, 85, loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, died July 17, 2013 at Carolina Point nursing home after a long illness.
Mrs. Brooks was born November 23, 1927 in Lansing, Michigan. She was a graduate of Michigan State University. She married Wally Brooks on March 3, 1951. They raised their family in Ossining, NY and moved to Chapel Hill, NC in 1986 after Wally retired from IBM.
Mrs. Brooks enjoyed painting, playing bridge, photography, spending time with her family and was an avid golfer. She loved cats and owned them for most of her life. She was especially fond of Siamese cats. She was an active member of University United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her daughter, Donna Hrebik of Milford, CT; her son, David Brooks and daughter-in-law, Deanna Brooks, of Chapel Hill, NC; her grandchildren, Jennifer Hrebik, Anthony Brooks and Amanda Brooks, many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased in death by her parents, Carl and Geneva (Kirk) Hess; her sister, Lois Britton; her brother-in-law, Robert Britton; her husband, Waldo E. Brooks Jr.; and a daughter, Barbara Brooks.
Services will be held on Saturday, July 20th at the University United Methodist Church. Visitation will be at 1 p.m., service will be at 2 p.m. and reception will be held after.
