DURHAM — Gert Berman died on May 10 2013. She was 97 years old. Gert lived a very active life involved in a variety of communities. She spent many years with Jacksonville Little Theatre/Theatre Jacksonville in Florida and The Lost Colony in Manteo. Her last active community was with the downtown Durham YMCA family. In her 90's, the YMCA would celebrate her birthday each year with a party and all the fixin's. Gert always loved a good party!
The family will be honoring her in a private gathering. In lieu of sending flowers, a donation can be made to the Alzheimer’s association or the charity of your choice in her name.
Joe Russell Farned
DURHAM — Joe Russell Farned passed away peacefully at Suburban Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland, on Tuesday, January 15, 2013, in his 87th year. Loving husband of 53 years of Polly Richardson Farned. Beloved father of Joe Jr. and his wife, Angela of Atherton, California, and Laura and her husband, Fred Tan of Potomac, Maryland. Proud grandfather of Joe III, Eric, Caroline and Jenna. He was educated at Delta State College in Mississippi and The University of Tennessee. Joe was a long time resident of Durham, where he retired from the Internal Revenue Service in 1986.
A Memorial Service at Duke Memorial United Methodist Church in Durham is scheduled for May 11, 2013 11 a.m.
William Arnold “Bill” Holleman
Durham – Mr. William Arnold “Bill” Holleman, age 85, died early Tuesday morning at Duke University Hospital.
Born April 17, 1928, Bill was preceded in death by his parents, R. Hugh and Esper Baldwin Holleman; and his son, W. Douglas Holleman. He lived in Chapel Hill almost his entire life, graduating from Chapel Hill School, and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Bill served in the US Air Force from 1952 – 1956 and was stationed in Texas, Japan, and South Carolina. He owned Matthews and Farrow Automotive Repair, retiring in 1985. After his retirement, he enjoyed his hobby of working with lamps and antiques at Lamps Unlimited and also at Heirlooms.
Bill was very active in the Southwest Durham Rotary Club and, for his outstanding service, was honored twice with the Paul Harris Fellowship Award. He spent a lot of time with his son in Boy Scouts, becoming a Boy Scout Leader. He was a strong believer that life was a gift and lived each day to the fullest. He always gave everything his best effort and enjoyed life’s journey.
Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Jean Farrow Holleman of the home; daughter, Karen Holleman Burris and her husband, Buddy; granddaughter, Jennifer Morgan Burris; grandson, Michael Douglas Burris; great grandson, Jeremiah Steven Burris, all of
Virginia Beach, VA; brother-in-law, Joseph A. Farrow Jr. and his wife, Emma, of Raleigh, NC; and his daughter-in-law, Sandra Greene Holleman, of Greensboro, NC.
A funeral service will be held on Monday, May 13, 2013, at 11 a.m. at Epworth United Methodist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Hope Vickers. Burial will follow in Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Brent Blaylock, Marvin Carver, Joe Jernigan, Mal King, Dan Minor, Ben Mixon and Richard Watson. Honorary Pallbearers will be members of the Southwest Durham Rotary Club.
The family will receive visitors Sunday afternoon from 3 – 5 p.m. at Howerton & Bryan Funeral Home.

Harry M. Pickett
DURHAM - Harry M. Pickett, age 85, died Thursday morning at Durham Regional Hospital.
Born July 28, 1927 in Durham, Mr. Pickett was the son of the late Milton Henry and Nannie Smith Pickett. He was a graduate of Bragtown High School and was a veteran of the U.S. Army. Mr. Pickett was employed with the A&P for forty years where he became a manager and later with Town and Country Foods, Kerr Drugs and Eckerd Drugs.
He was a member of Temple Baptist Church and was a former member and deacon of Edgemont Baptist Church where he also taught Sunday school to junior high school boys.
Surviving are his son, David C. Pickett of Durham; his daughter, Debbie P. Bridges and husband; Wayne; of Clayton; two grandsons, Jason Bridges and Jarred Bridges; and one great-grandson, Brandon Bridges. Preceding him in death was his wife, Marie Carter Pickett. Mr. Pickett was the last surviving child in a family of ten children.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in Howerton & Bryan Funeral Chapel, the Rev. Forest M. Gale Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Maplewood Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the service from 12:30 to 1:45 p.m.
The family would like to thank Ena Baker, nurse manager of Unit 5-2, Durham Regional Hospital, and the staff of nurses and assistants for the wonderful care given to Mr. Pickett during his hospitalization there.

Mary "Seabird" Lee Reid
DURHAM — Mary "Seabird" Lee Reid, age 75, departed this life on May 8, 2013.
She leaves to cherish her memories, sons, Howard Reid, Clayton Reid and Eddie Reid; daughters, Lynette Trice, Nelea Reid and Linda Reid; one brother, Horace Reid; two sisters, Hattie Reid and Patsy Owens.
Services will take place on Tuesday, May 14, 2013 at 1 p.m. at Mt. Calvary Church, 1715 Athens Avenue. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.

Bertha Hustede Whitmore
DURHAM — Bertha Hustede Whitmore, 93, died May 9, 2013 at Duke University Hospital. She was born in Weimar, TX to the late Gustav Charlie Hustede and Mary Louise Koehn Hustede.
Bertha was an avid gardener. She was raised on a farm in southeast Texas and always loved farm life. She constantly monitored the weather and worried about how it was affecting the farmers. She was always more concerned about others than herself, keeping in touch with many former co-workers and childhood friends. She shared generously the fruits of her gardening. She always loved to have flowers around; they raised her spirits. We thank the Lord that she was able to live independently, had a sharp mind right up to the last days of her life, and passed peacefully in her sleep.
Bertha is survived by her son, Roy Walter Whitmore and wife, Marilynn Turner Whitmore of Durham, NC; her grandchildren, Aaron Turner Whitmore and Amy Marie Maynard; and her great-grandchildren, Emma Marie Maynard and Abigail Turner Maynard.
Friends are invited to visit from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, May 11, 2013, at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service in Durham.

Walter "Shy" Wilson Jr.
DURHAM — The Life He Lived......"
Early Monday morning, May 6, 2013 at 5:00 a.m. at VA Hospice, Durham, NC, God called WALTER "SHY" WILSON JR. home to rest. Walter was born September 27, 1930 in Durham County to the late Walter and Sadie Wilson Lipscomb.
Walter leaves to cherish his memories: four daughters, Shirley Ann Harper, Linda Daniels, Robin Tharrington (James) and Mamie Watson; six sons, Tyrone Wilson (Tara), Anthony Wilson, Marcus McCormick, Lamont Bolden (Suama), Marvin Bolden (Haime) and Dehaventon (Glenda); two grandsons that he raised, Derek Meekins and Antwan Wilson; 16 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren.
Services will be Monday, May 13, at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church. Viewing at 12 noon and services at 1 p.m.
Family will be receiving visitors at 11 Lullwater Court, in the Grove Park subdivision, 919-596-5103.

Daphene Lacock Dobson
CHAPEL HILL — Daphene Lacock Dobson of Chapel Hill passed away on May 9, 2013.
She was the daughter of the late Lula Johnson and Forrest Lacock. She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Miriam and Norman Tripp; grandsons, Garrett, Britton, and Connor Tripp; a sister, Myrtis Williams of Whitsett; a brother and sister-in-law, Wayne and Carolyn Lacock of Chapel Hill; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Monday, May 13 from 7 to 9 p.m. at Damascus Congregational Christian Church. Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 14 at 3 p.m. at the church with burial following in the church cemetery.
