Martha Percy Boatright

DURHAM — Mrs. Martha Percy Boatright passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2013 after several years of declining health. She was born August 14, 1927 in Hendersonville, N.C. to the late Daisy S. and Victor Percy Sr. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Alyce Green; and brothers, Willard Percy and Victor Percy Jr.
Martha lived in Durham since 1939, graduating from Durham High School in 1946 and Durham Tech in 1971. She retired after 34 years from the American Tobacco Company as a Research Inspector. After retirement she did volunteer work at Lenox Baker Children’s Hospital.
She was a member of Bethesda Baptist Church and The Martha Sunday School Class. She enjoyed cooking, needle work, sewing and cake decorating, having made wedding dresses for her daughters and oldest granddaughter. She also made wedding cakes for her three children, several grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She is survived by her husband of 66 years, Thomas (TJ) Boatright; three children, Sandra Davis (Bill) of Mocksville; Dan Boatright (Pam) of Carterville, IL; and Janet Wheeler (Russell) of Efland; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren; also surviving are three sisters, Olive Hilliard, Eleanor Rigsbee and Donna Percy; two brothers, Ralph Percy and Jerry Percy.
The family would like to thank neighbors Bob and Ann Bailey, and Ron and Sally Duffy for their help over the years. Also special thanks to Tommy’s Caregivers, Shirley Sneed, Margaret Curtis and Gwen Alston.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Chapel. Rev. Hugh O’Shields and Rev. Earl Echols will officiate. Burial will be in Brier Creek Memorial Gardens.

Gary Wayne Crawford
DURHAM - Mr. Gary Wayne Crawford, 53, of Durham died on Sunday, May 5, 2013. He was the son of the late Carlon Crawford. He attended Cornerstone Community Church.  
He is survived by his mother, Louise D. Crawford; two sons, Bradford James Crawford and Christopher Blake Crawford, both of Durham; two brothers, Carlon Crawford Jr. and John Crawford; two sisters, Rita Crawford and Lynn Shields.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 2 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Chapel. Rev. Phil Clark will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens.

Lillian Caroline Toraine Doles
DURHAM - Mrs. Lillian Caroline Toraine Doles, 73, of 2700 Atlantic St., died Saturday, May 4, 2013 at her home.
Her service will be held at 12 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, 2013 at Burthey Funeral Chapel, 1510 Fayetteville St. Interment will follow in Beechwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday evening at Burthey Funeral Chapel.  Mrs. Doles can also be viewed from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. on Thursday, one hour prior to the service.
Mrs. Doles is survived by her husband, John W. Doles Jr.; four children, Arthur Royster, Cil Royster Johnson, Teressa Johnson and John W. Doles III; and one sister, Mary Toraine.

Eugene Elvin Rudd
DURHAM — Mr. Eugene Elvin Rudd, 68, of Durham died on Saturday, May 4, 2013. He was a native and lifelong resident of Durham, the son of Harold Elvin Rudd and Estelle Ray Rudd. He retired after 25 years of service from GTE as an Installer/Repairman. He was a member of Bible Baptist Church for 37 years, he loved his friends and his Church family.
He is survived by his wife, Marie R. Rudd who he married on August 17, 1965; two daughters, Regina R. Philpot of Durham; Lisa R. Hall and husband, Joey of Puyallup, Wa.; two sisters, Katherine Mann of Durham; and Ruby Williams of Durham; six grandchildren, Quentin Philpot, Morgan Philpot, Trevor McCants, Marisa Lomas, Steven Lomas and Kariss Marie Hall.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at Bible Baptist Church. Rev. Greg Allison and Rev. Jimmy Hall will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park.

Edwin J. “Jack” Way
DURHAM — Edwin Jackson, “Jack” Way, age 76, lifelong Durham resident died Sunday at his home.
Born April 19, 1937, Jack was the son of the late Thomas Elwood and Lee Anna Mangum Way. He attended the Durham public schools, graduating from Lowes Grove High School, and also attended Durham Technical Institute, where he received an Associate Degree in Business Administration. Jack served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, and was a retired employee of Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company, where he worked for 30 years.
Surviving are his son, Martin J. Way, of the U.S. Army, stationed in Korea; his nephew, Randy Way of Durham; his niece, Wendy 
Howlett of Eden; and his two best friends, Mike Hayes and Mary McMillan, both of Durham. His wife, Phyllis Harris Way, and  son, Bradley Edwin Way preceded him in death.
Graveside funeral services will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in Raleigh Memorial Park, Chaplain Ronald R. Currin officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a favorite charity.

Elizabeth "Pie Baby" Nicholson Wilson
DURHAM - Elizabeth "Pie Baby" Nicholson Wilson, 50, departed her life on May 3, 2013.
She is survived by her Father and Mother, Rev. T.C. Nicholson and Bessie Nicholson; her dear daughter, Kelamatina Wilson; two grandsons; four sisters; two brothers; other relatives and friends.
Family visitation will be held from 1 to 2 on Thursday, May 9, at Glenn's Grove Baptist Church. Homegoing service will begin at 2 p.m.

Fallis Owen “F.O.” Finch II

OXFORD — Fallis Owen “F.O.” Finch II, age 67, died Monday, May 06, 2013 at his home. A Granville County native, he was the son of the late Fallis Owen Finch Sr. and wife, Evelyn Currin Finch.
“F.O.” was a member of the Oxford Baptist Church. He proudly served his country as a member of the US Army and was a Vietnam Veteran. He was founder of F.O. Insurance Agency in 1984. He was a member of Oxford Masonic Lodge #122, past president of Granville County Shrine Club. As a member of Amran Temple, he founded the Amran Ragtop Unit and was a member of Raleigh Court #186 ROJ. 
“FO” served as an integral part of the Oxford business community and served as past president of the Downtown Economic Development Committee, past president of Granville County Chamber of Commerce, and past president of Vance-Granville Home Builder’s Association.
Funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Oxford Baptist Church by Dr. Steven Bolton. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.
The family will receive friends today, May 7, 2013 from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home. At the other times at the home.
Surviving is his wife, Gaynelle White Finch; sons, Jason Douglas Finch (Julie Brooks) of Oxford, Fallis Owen Finch III, of Raleigh; brothers, The Honorable Daniel F. Finch (Jean) of Oxford and Phillip Currin Finch of Henderson; two grandchildren, Brooks Owen Finch and Sarah Opal Finch.

Alvis James Dixon

CHAPEL HILL — Alvis James Dixon, 86, died Sunday, May 5, 2013 at Chapel Hill Rehab. He had been in declining health for several years and had been in rehab after suffering a stroke on April 7, 2013.
He was born in Durham county on June 7, 1926 and had lived in Orange county all his life. He worked as a farm hand early in life and later worked at UNC housekeeping and movers. He served in the US Navy in WWll. He married Ann Williams in 1949, had two sons, Kennth and Alvis Jr. He was an accomplished bluegrass musician and played with a band on a local radio program in the 1960s. He loved whittling and making clocks.
He is preceded in death by his son, Jimmy and wife, Ann. He is survived by his son, Kennth Dixon of the home; a granddaughter, Jessica Dixon of Hillsborough; a sister, Zola Pendergraph of Chapel Hill; and several nieces and nephews. An informal memorial gathering will be held on Saturday May 18th from 2 to 4 p.m. at the home.

Mary Ella Currin Mitchell

ROCKY MOUNT — Mary Ella Currin Mitchell, age 87, passed away May 5, 2013 at Nash Memorial Hospital. She was born in Oxford, NC to the late Sidney Thomas Currin Sr. and Eloise Mayes Currin. She was preceded in death by brothers, Sidney T. Jr., Garland and J. Brent. Mrs. Mitchell graduated from Oxford High School and Greensboro College. She resided in Weldon, NC where she retired from teaching Home Economics at Roanoke Rapids High School.
Mary Ella enjoyed the regular fellowship of the Weldon Thursday Book Club. She also took pride in hosting and baking for family and friend’s celebrations.
Graveside services will be held at Elmwood Cemetery on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at 3 p.m.    
She is survived by a sister-in-law; and nine nieces and nephews.
The family would like to particularly thank Mrs. Doris Tillery, who helped Mary Ella over the years, especially during her declining health. We would also like to thank the staff at Sterling House, Rocky Mount, NC for the care they gave.
