Ralph Edward “Nicky” Campbell
DURHAM - Ralph Edward “Nicky” Campbell passed away unexpectedly Friday, April 26, 2013 at the age of 54.
Ralph is survived by his daughters, Lindsey Nicole Campbell of Cliffside Park, New Jersey and Amy Jo Campbell of Jacksonville, Florida; grandson, Aiden Brunner of Jacksonville, Florida; former wife, Cindy Campbell, of Durham; mother, Ruth Lively Campbell, of Durham; sister, Cathy Ellis and husband, Wayne, of Winterville; brother, Johnny Redmond of Durham; and nephews Chris Ellis, Scott Ellis and Chuck Redmond.
Ralph was preceded in death by his father, Ralph E. Campbell; and brother, Kenneth Campbell.
He adored his grandson, Aiden, and was the best ‘Paypaw’ anyone could ask for. He also loved a winning hand in poker, a sunny day on the golf course, watching his daughters grow up, lighting the grill for the first time each summer, and cheering for the Duke Blue Devils, win or lose. Ralph never met a stranger, was a friend to everyone, and will be dearly missed.
The family will receive friends Monday, April 29th from 6-8 p.m. at Hall-Wynne Funeral Home, 1113 W. Main St., Durham. A private service and interment will be held at Mt Zion United Methodist Church, Hurdle Mills.

Laura Clarice Johnson Croom
DURHAM — Mrs. Laura Clarice Johnson Croom, age 91, resident of Durham, died Saturday afternoon at her home.
Born October 8, 1921 in Durham County, Mrs. Croom was the daughter of the late W.I. and Bessie Colston Johnson. She had been a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church for many years.
Surviving are her husband of 71 years, Marcus J. Croom; three sons, Marc J. Croom Jr. and wife, Jane, Parris M. Croom and wife, Barbara, and Jeffrey W. Croom and wife, Mary Beth; a stepsister, Cordelia Blalock; seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, five great great grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death are a son, Les J. Croom; two sisters, Helen J. Veasey and Jocelyn Mason; and a brother, W.I. Johnson Jr.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Howerton & Bryan Funeral Chapel. Burial will be in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1 to 1:45 p.m.

John Rowland McCurley
DURHAM - Mr. John Rowland McCurley, 83, of Rougemont, died on Tuesday, April 23, 2013.
Mr. McCurley was born in Chicago, Ill, to the late John and Irene Elizabeth Tillmore McCurley. He started Old Hickory Motors in 1981 and owned John McCurley Oxford Ford and several used car lots. He loved the car business, but his passion was his wife and family.
He is survived by his loving wife, Francoise Pasquet McCurley; two sons, John McCurley Jr. and wife, Terry, and Kenny McCurley; one daughter, Sonia Herndon and husband, Michael; three grandsons, Nick McCurley, Anthony McCurley and Chandler McCurley; one granddaughter, Brittany Herndon; one precious great-granddaughter, Rayleigh Raine Herndon; three nieces and a loving dog, Peppi.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Chapel, officiated by Rev. Clarence Parrish. Burial will be in the Ellis Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Bill Gaskins, Nick Piornack, Richard Saverino, Peter Saverino, Sal Ruffino and Steven Ysidron.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home.
The family wishes to thank everyone at Regional Cancer Care for the care of Mr. McCurley and especially Nicki and also Durham Regional Hospital.

Nancy Carolyn Beeker
SPARTANBURG, SC – Nancy Carolyn Beeker, of Richfield, NC and formerly of Durham, passed away Friday, April 26, 2013 at Regional Hospice Home, Spartanburg, SC. Born in Durham County, Mrs. Beeker was the daughter of the late Ernest Whittington and Ruth Johnson Whittington. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Edward Beeker; and a granddaughter, Molly Mitchell. Nancy was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother.
She spent much of her life as a community volunteer with Durham City Schools and NC Extension Homemakers.
Mrs. Beeker is survived by a son, Edward Beeker II and wife, Kirsten; two daughters, Beth Sherron and husband, Michael, and Ann Long and husband, Bruce; two brothers, Cameron Francis and wife, Darlene, and Ernest Whittington Jr. and wife, Pat; a sister, Lynn Saphaugh and husband, Keith; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great, great-grandchild.
A graveside service will be held Monday 11 a.m. at Maplewood Cemetery, Section 3. The family will receive friends at Clements Funeral Home, 1105 Broad Street, prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Spartanburg Regional Hospice House, 686 Jeff Davis Rd., Spartanburg, SC 29303.
