Joy Hales Boyette
DURHAM — Mrs. Joy Hales Boyette, 72, of Durham, died on Thursday, April 25, 2013.
Mrs. Boyette was born in Johnston County to the late Rolan Hales and E.J. Creech Hales. She retired after 30 years with IBM Corp. She attended Gorman Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Edgar Boyette.
She is survived by her daughters, Pamela Truell and husband, Paul of Durham, Heather Jennings and husband, Barry of Raleigh; one brother, Wallace Hales and wife, Glenda of Wilmington; sister-in-law, Laverne Hales of Goldsboro; brother-in-law, Paul Boyette of Durham; and one grandson, Jordan Truell.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday at 3 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Chapel, officiated by Rev. Tim Wheeler. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
The family would like to thank Bonnie Mulchi, Lisa Furman, Lee and Terri Mae Green and Dr. Kelli Brooks for their care of Joy during her illness.

John Rowland McCurley
DURHAM - Mr. John Rowland McCurley, 83, of Rougemont, died on Tuesday, April 23, 2013.
Mr. McCurley was born in Chicago, Ill, to the late John and Irene Elizabeth Tillmore McCurley. He started Old Hickory Motors in 1981 and owned John McCurley Oxford Ford and several used car lots. He loved the car business, but his passion was his wife and family.
He is survived by his loving wife, Francoise Pasquet McCurley; two sons, John McCurley Jr. and wife, Terry, and Kenny McCurley; one daughter, Sonia Herndon and husband, Michael; three grandsons, Nick McCurley, Anthony McCurley and Chandler McCurley; one granddaughter, Brittany Herndon; one precious great-granddaughter, Rayleigh Raine Herndon; three nieces and a loving dog, Peppi.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Chapel, officiated by Rev. Clarence Parrish. Burial will be in the Ellis Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Bill Gaskins, Nick Piornack, Richard Saverino, Peter Saverino, Sal Ruffino and Steven Ysidron.
The family will receive friends on Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home.
The family wishes to thank everyone at Regional Cancer Care for the care of Mr. McCurley and especially Nicki and also Durham Regional Hospital.

Frances Sanders Moorhead
CHAPEL HILL — Frances Sanders Moorhead, 81, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 25, 2013 surrounded by her three daughters. Born in Gastonia, NC, on December 24, 1931, she was a beloved wife and mother who spent much of her adult life in Chapel Hill, NC. She was married for nearly 60 years to her high school sweetheart, Robert Burns Moorhead, who survives her, and was a wonderful mother to her daughters, Lynn Morton (Ric Morton), Jane Lyonnais (Mike Lyonnais), and Becky McGrath (Scott McGrath), as well as the beloved grandmother of nine grandchildren. Frances was a gifted elementary school teacher who began her teaching career in a one room schoolhouse in Wadena MN in 1953 and ended it at Ephesus Elementary School in Chapel Hill in 1993. She was also a talented homemaker who did her best to pass along her vast knowledge of cooking, sewing, and gardening, to her three daughters, with varying success. Known for her wonderful sense of humor, Frances was still making her family and friends as well as the UNC Hospital staff laugh at the end of her life. 
The family would like to especially thank the staff and caregivers at The Cedars Retirement Community, the DuBose Health Center at The Cedars, and the physicians and nurses at UNC Hospital. A celebration of the life of Frances Moorhead will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 29, 2013 at Olin T. Binkley Memorial Baptist Church, 1712 Willow Drive, Chapel Hill, NC. In accordance with Frances’ wishes, memorial contributions may be made to the North Carolina Highway Wildflower program by writing to NC Department of Transportation, Roadside Environmental Unit, 1540 MSC, Raleigh NC 27699-1540.

Luvenia J. Parrish
DURHAM - Luvenia J. Parrish, 95, departed her life on April 25, 2013.
She leaves behind her husband, McKever Parrish; two daughters; two sons; eight grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild; two brothers; and two sisters.   
Visitation will be Sunday at 1:30 p.m. with services at 2 p.m. at New Red Mountain Baptist Church in Rougemont, NC.

Nancy “Banana” Gray Powell
DURHAM — Mrs. Nancy “Banana” Gray Powell, 71, passed away Thursday, April 25, 2013 at Croasdaile Village Retirement Community.  She was born in Durham Co. to the late William Robert Gray and Mary Magdalene Malone Gray. Mrs. Powell was a registered nurse at Duke Medical Center and she attended Grey Stone Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Earl Powell; daughters, Rebecca Blackwell (Bill) of Durham, Christina Farrell (Jeff) of Durham, and Deborah Powell of Raleigh; grandchildren, Brittany Powell, Mitchell Farrell, and Mary Henson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Monday, April 29, 2013 at Grey Stone Baptist Church with Dr. Clay Waters and Dr. Malbert Smith Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery. Family will receive friends 5 to 7 p.m., Sunday, April 28, 2013 at Clements Funeral Home in Durham.

DURHAM - Mrs. Julia L. West, 66, passed away Friday, April 26, 2013 at Hock Family Pavilion. She was born in Durham Co. to the late Howard Moody Sr. and Rachel Lloyd Moody.
Mrs. West is survived by her son, Charles Kraciuk (Robin); daughters, Donna Paschall and Diane Brackett; grandchildren, Courtney Paschall, and Adam and Jessica Kraciuk; five brothers and three sisters.

R. Leon O'Briant
August 20, 1934 to April 24, 2013

MEBANE — R. Leon O'Briant died on the evening of Wednesday, April 24 after a brief illness. He was born in Greenville, SC, resided in Raleigh, NC for most of his adult life and had lived in Mebane, NC since 2007. He had two years of honorable service in the US Army in the 1950's and was a graduate of East Carolina University. He retired as a supervisor of corporate out-of-state tax auditors for the NC Department of Revenue.
He enjoyed reading and studying history and he was also an avid collector of antiques, specializing in the restoration of early electric clocks. He was beloved by family and friends for his generosity, kindness, wit and his gift of story-telling. He is survived by his son, James; daughter-in-law, Janete; brother, Guerry; and sisters, Alene Thomas and Linda Justice.
A viewing will be held at Walker's Funeral Home (919-942-3861) at 120 W. Franklin St., Chapel Hill, NC from 12 to 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 28, to be followed by cremation.

Mozelle Blythe Ray
HILLSBOROUGH — Mrs. Mozelle Blythe Ray, 94, passed away Thursday, April 25, 2013 at Carillon Assisted Living Center. She was born in Harnett County, NC to the late Charlie Floyd Byrd and Florence Barbour Byrd. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Coley Ray; and grandson, Kyle Ray. Mrs. Ray was a member of First Baptist Church in Hillsborough and a member of the Fidelis Sunday School Class.
She is survived by her sons, Sam Ray (Joyce), Mike Ray (Mary), Larry Ray (Sheri); brother, David Byrd (Shirley); grandchildren, Pam Ray, Coley Ray (Lauri), Leigh Cramer (Justin), Charlie Ray (Anna), Mandy Parker (Mike); and six great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. on Monday, April 29 at Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham with Rev. Randy Carter officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow at Maplewood Cemetery.

Leonie Hatcher Mundy
ROXBORO — Leonie Hatcher Mundy, 96, of 106 Allgood Street, died Thursday April 25, 2013. Born in Charlotte County, Va., daughter of the late James Goode Hatcher & Mary Willie Ferrell Hatcher, wife of the late Fleming H. Mundy & sister to 12 other siblings & one grandchild, Randall Horner, who have preceded her in death. Mrs. Mundy worked in Longhurst Cotton Mill as a Spinner until retiring. She was also a Caregiver to many elderly people and loved to clean for people. She loved to work in her flowers and was a member of Grace United Methodist Church.
Surviving are her daughters, Mary Ann Horner & husband, Richard of Roxboro, Jean Regan & husband, Rassie of Roxboro; five grandchildren, Donald Horner & wife, Vicky, Richard Horner & wife, Inez, Michael Horner & wife, Anna, Ronald Regan Sr., & wife, Bonnie, Tammy Whitt & husband, Doyle; eight great-grandchildren, Kelli Horner & fiancée, Scot Brooks, Ronald Regan Jr. & wife, Jenna, Brian Horner, Alan Regan, Taylor Whitt, Dalton Whitt, Samantha Horner; two great-great-grandchildren, Ronald "Tripp" Regan III & Cayden Kearney.
The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. today, April 27, 2013 just prior to the Service at Brooks & White Chapel and other times at the home of her daughter & son-in-law, Jean & Rassie Regan, 40 John D. Winstead Road, Roxboro, NC 27574.
Funeral Services will be held 2 p.m. today, April 27, 2013 at the Brooks & White Chapel by Rev. Ross Thompson. Interment will follow in Person Memorial Cemetery.

Harvey Edward Ellis
ATLANTA, GA. — Harvey Edward Ellis, 81, died on Saturday, April 13, 2013, of complications following surgery.
He and his wife, Lynda, had lived in Durham, NC, for 28 years until moving to the Atlanta, Georgia area in 2012. He was born and raised in Maine and served in the Navy as an aerial photographer. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Durham, NC, for 28 years and was retired from GTE/Verizon.
A memorial service and burial will be in Winslow, Maine at a later date.
He is survived by his wife, Lynda Ellis of Decatur GA; two daughters, Roxane Ellis and Tracey Ellis-Guss; two stepsons, Steve Eddins and Glen Eddins, and their families; six grandchildren; one brother; four sisters.
