Melvin “Wayne” Brinkley
DURHAM - Melvin “Wayne” Brinkley, 71, died on Thursday, January 24, 2013 at his home. Wayne was born in Durham on June 26, 1941. He was preceded in death by his parents, Peggy Utley Edmonds, Louis Dwight Edmonds and James Robert Brinkley.
If you ever met Wayne, you would know, without a doubt, his incredible love for his family especially his children and grandson. Throughout the years, one of his favorite things was playing golf. Later in life, he began to share his love of golf with others by making custom golf clubs to give to most of the kids he met and coaching golf for the Special Olympics.
Wayne was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Shirley Nelson Brinkley.
He is survived by his daughter, Beth Brinkley Shepard of Durham; son, Dwayne Brinkley and wife, Heather, of Durham; grandson and best friend, Max Shepard of Durham; sister, Bonnie Smith of Durham; and niece, Audrey Smith Rorer, husband, Jared, great nephew, Evan of Charlotte. He is also survived by many other cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
A Memorial Service will be offered 1 p.m. Tuesday, January 29, 2013 from Page Road Baptist Church, 1912 Page Rd., Durham 27703.
Friends may visit from 11:30 – 1, prior to the service at the church and, other times, at the home of Bonnie Smith.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Wayne’s name may be made to the Special Olympics North Carolina, 2200 Gateway Centre Blvd., Ste. 201, Morrisville 27560.

Frances Lydia Chamberlain
DURHAM - Frances Lydia Chamberlain, 82, of Durham died peacefully at her residence on Thursday, January 24, 2013. Born Sept. 4, 1930 in Harnett County, she was the daughter of the late Kermit and Clara Smith Cotton. She was a devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
Frances is survived by her daughter, Kay Haun of Durham; her son, Harry Utley of Durham; her sisters, Betsy Russell of Maggie Valley, N.C.; Letha Sears of Fuquay-Varina; her grandson, Robert A. Haun III and wife, Wendy, of Apex; and her great granddaughter, Natalie Haun.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Patricia Utley.
Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at Maplewood Cemetery with Pastor Richard Leader officiating.
Friends may visit with the family following the service at Maplewood.

Maynard James "Kool" Crawley
DURHAM - Mr. Maynard James "Kool" Crawley, 71, of 1105 Lowry Ave, died Wednesday, January 23, 2013. His service will be conducted at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at Burthey Funeral Chapel, 1510 Fayetteville St. The family will receive friends from 2:30-3 p.m. on Tuesday at the chapel one half hour prior to the service.
Mr. Crawley is survived by his wife, Mrs. Letha J. Crawley.


Elder Hal Joel Royster Sr.
DURHAM — Elder Hal Joel Royster Sr. of Durham passed on January 21, 2013.
Elder Royster was pastor of Robinson Memorial United Holy Church in Eden for over 45 years and retired from Duke University Medical Center after 32 years of service.
He is survived by five children: Ronald D. Royster (Mildred), of Shallotte, Hal J. Royster Jr. (Gail), Michael D. Royster, William F. Royster and Sharon McMillon (Lewis), all of Durham; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs Jean Miller, Mrs. Laura Walker; and twin brother, Harry J. Royster, all of Durham.
The family will have visitation from 11 a.m. to 12 noon on Monday, January 28, 2013, at Fisher Memorial United Holy Church, 420 E. Piedmont Ave, Durham. The funeral will take place at noon immediately following visitation. Burial will be in Beechwood Cemetery.
