Ethel Gillis Coleman
DURHAM — Ethel Gillis Coleman, 98, the daughter of the late William Henry and Barbara Goibs Gillis, Concord, Cabarrus County, North Carolina, departed this life on Tuesday afternoon, January 14, 2014 at the Hillcrest Convalescence Center in Durham, N.C.
Mrs. Coleman is survived by her 4 children, Frances C. Walford, Baltimore, Md.; Barbara C. Smith, East Hartford, Conn.; Clinton R. Coleman, Jr., Baltimore, Md.; G. Ray Coleman, Durham, N.C., with whom she lived for the past 7 years; 8 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Coleman's late husband, Bishop Clinton R. Coleman, Sr., predeceased her in 1996.
She attended the public schools of Concord, N.C. and received her bachelor's degree from Fayetteville State College (University) in 1956. Mrs. Coleman taught in the North Carolina public school system and retired in 1976 from the Baltimore City school system. She spent 47 years in the City of Baltimore where her husband was pastor of Pennsylvania Avenue A.M.E. Zion Church, and in 1972 he was elevated to the Episcopacy of the A.M.E. Zion Church and Mrs. Coleman participated in this larger ministry, serving as Bishop Coleman's Missionary Supervisor.
Mrs. Coleman was a gracious and generous woman with a sweet spirit, a radiant smile, and a quick wit. She will be missed by her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and all who knew her.
Her service of celebration will be held Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at St. Mark A.M.E. Zion Church, 531 S. Roxboro St. Viewing 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon, service at 12:00 noon. The family requests, in lieu of flowers contribution be made to the St. Mark A.M.E. Zion Church Building Fund.

DURHAM — Mr. Tommy Collins passed away on January 16, 2014. He is survived by his mother, Ethel Collins; father, Louis Collins; fiancee, La Starr Withers; one son, Timothy; two daughters, Tiffany and Ashley; six brothers, Milton, Victor (Jolynn), Roger, Roland Lee, Jeffrey, Stephen; one sister, Louise Neal (David).
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at Seed Time & Harvest Fellowship, 804 Berwyn Ave, Durham, NC 27704 beginning at 1 p.m. A visitation with family and friends will be held one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are entrusted to Scarborough and Hargett Memorial Chapel and Gardens.
Lillie Eva Bostick Holloway
DURHAM — Mrs. Lillie Eva Bostick Holloway, 85, of 1306 Drew St., died Saturday, January 11, 2014 at her home. Her service will be held at 1pm on Saturday, January 18, at Union Baptist Church, 904 North Roxboro St. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Saturday at the church from 12-1pm one hour prior to the service.
Mrs. Holloway is survived by three children, Brenda Holloway, Dwight Bostick and Wayne Bostick; and two brothers, Eddie and Roy Bostick.

James Robert Gates
HILLSBOROUGH — James Robert Gates, born December 15, 1931, passed away peacefully on the morning of January 15, 2014. James, who grew up in Hillsborough, was born in Caldwell to the late James W. Gates and Ruth C. Gates. He is preceded in death by both parents; his wife, Andrea; his infant son, James E. Gates; and his son-in-law, Larry Marcom. He is survived by his sister, Gladys Boyd and her husband, George; 2 daughters, Susan Marcom and Faye Gates; 5 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; and extended family. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 18, 2014 at 2:00 PM in the Walker's Funeral Home Chapel in Hillsborough.
Judith Nagle Hallock
EFLAND — Mrs. Judith (Judi) Nagle Hallock died at her home in Efland, North Carolina on 12 December 2013, from complications of Parkinson’s disease; she was 68.
Mrs. Hallock was born on 9 February 1945 in Boston, Massachusetts. Her parents were Alexander C. Nagle, Jr. and Mary C. Nagle. She had a twin brother Alexander C. Nagle III and a younger sister Laura Wilson. She was married to Zachariah R. Hallock on 27 December 1966, in Westhampton, New York. She attended elementary and middle schools in Scarsdale, NY and the Knox School (high school) in St. James, NY. She also attended the American School in Switzerland after graduation in 1963. Her main extracurricular activities were horseback riding and teaching riding to children during summers. After marriage she resided in New York City (where she worked as a fashion model, was a travel advisor for AAA, and taught driving in Brooklyn, NY). From 1970 to 1977 she resided in Miami Florida, where her children were born, followed by Long Beach Mississippi from 1977 to 2004. She then moved to Efland, North Carolina in 2004 to be near her children.
Mrs. Hallock’s joys in life were her family, taking care of horses and other animals, as well as teaching riding and boarding horses.
Mrs. Hallock is survived by her husband of 47 years, Zachariah R. Hallock; a son Zeb Hallock, his wife Amanda and their son Darwin; a daughter Deborah Gunter, her husband Matthew and their daughters Emma and Cecilia; and a sister Laura Wilson.
She was preceded in death by her brother Alexander C. Nagle III on 10 September 1981.
