Michael E. Butts, Jr.
DURHAM — Michael E. Butts, Jr., 34, passed away on April 16, 2014 at his home after a long illness. Mike was a loving person with a giving heart who loved life! He lived for every moment--all gas no brakes, and never met a stranger. To know him was to love him. He will truly be missed.
Mike was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Eugene D. Butts, and maternal grandmother, Barbara J. Rogers, as well as a favorite cousin, Erica Johnson.
Surviving are his wife, Syreeta Butts; 4 children, Dameon, Destiny, Myles, and William; paternal grandmother, Barbara J. Butts; parents, Michael E. Butts, Sr. and Angela Butts; 2 sisters, Nikisha Butts and Jessica Guidon; 2 brothers, Aaron Butts and Malik Butts; goddaughter, Cyreeta Hannah; special cousins, Tremayne Butts and Isaac Brown; special friends, Rob Gray, Craig Watson, Brad Hambric, and Ronald Yarborough; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, as well as multitude of other family and friends.
A memorial service will be held on April 25, 2014 at 1pm at The New Shiloh Holiness Church located at 2507 S. Alston Avenue, Durham, NC 27713.

Liston Gore Jr.
DURHAM — Mr. Liston Gore Jr., age 61, passed at Duke Regional Hospital on April 15, 2014. He is survived by his devoted wife, Brenda Hinton Gore; parents, Mr. and Mrs. Liston Gore Sr.; one son, Liston T. Gore III; two daughters, Kimberly Taylor and Ebonie Hinton; six grandchildren; one brother, Reginald Gore; three sisters, Mildred Logan, Ann Baker and Gwendolyn Gore.
Services will take place on Monday, April 21, 2014, at First Calvary Baptist Church, 1311 Morehead Avenue, Durham, NC at 12:00 noon. One hour prior to the service, family members will be available to greet friends.
Scarborough and Hargett Funeral Home, Inc. is assisting the family during their time of need.

Teresa Ann Royster
DURHAM — Teresa Ann Royster, 55, departed this life on April 10, 2014.
She leaves to cherish her memory one son, one sister, three brothers, one aunt, three uncles, and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 21, 2014, at St. Joseph AME Church at 2:00 pm. Visitation at 1:00 pm.

Velton Pierce Thompson
DURHAM — Velton Pierce Thompson departed this life on April 14 at the Durham VA Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held Monday, April 21 at 12 noon at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church. The family visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
He was one of the ten original African-American Durham Firefighters.
Survivors include wife, Edna Brewington Thompson; 2 sons, Lather Pierce Thompson (Patti) and Michael Anthony Thompson; 3 grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.

Rick L. Love
BUTNER — Mr. Rick L. Love, 59, a lifelong resident of Butner, passed away Thursday, April 17, 2014 at his home.
Rick was born on July 22, 1954 to the late Thurman L. and Erika P. Love. He was preceded in death by a son, Christopher R Love. He worked at Nortel Networks as Systems Engineer, was owner of Butner Florist and Garden Center, and in recent years employed with the NC Dept. of Public Safety. Rick was of the Presbyterian faith. He served as vice-president and board member for many years at South Granville Country Club. He enjoyed golf, NASCAR racing, RVing, and being with friends.
He is survived by his wife, Janet, and beloved grandchildren, Garrett and Caitlin Love who were of his greatest joy and loved as his own. He also is survived by grandchildren Corey Justin Self, Tessa and Gabby Cleaver, sister Lilian Hammond, sisters-in-law Kim (Mike) Wilson, Teresa (Randy) Stone, Wanda (Jim) Overstreet, Michelle (David) Johnson, along with many nephews and nieces.
The family would like to acknowledge all the wonderful support from the community, LabCorp friends and especially friends Wendell and Denise Fain along with the many friends since childhood who have been by his side during this illness. Rick was blessed with a friend everywhere he went and was admired for his honesty and integrity. The family would also like to express thanks for all the wonderful care by Duke Cancer & Hospice Center, Dr. Hope Uronis, Margot O’Neil P.A., and Dr. Eugene Linfors.
Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, April 21, 2014 at First Baptist Church in Butner at 200 West ‘D’ Street by Rev. Charlie Bryan and Rev. Lenny Rogers. In lieu of flowers memorial tributes can be made to First Baptist Church in Butner, P.O. Box 44, Butner, NC 27509, and/or Duke HomeCare & Hospice ( in memory of Rick Love.

Edna Opal Miller Hicks
TIMBERLAKE — Mrs. Edna Opal Miller Hicks, 82, daughter of the late William Davis and Zona Byars Miller, died Thursday afternoon at Duke University Hospital.
Mrs. Hicks was born and raised in Durham, NC. She attended the Durham public schools. She was employed for many years and most recently was employed with North American Aerodynamics in Roxboro as a seamstress, sewing parachutes. Mrs. Hicks was a longtime member of Ephesus Baptist Church.
Edna is survived by her daughters, Deborah Hicks Malinowski, and her husband, Danny, of Butner, NC, Margaret Elaine Hicks Johns, and her husband, Mike, of Chatsworth, GA; son, Carl Edward Hicks, and his wife, Betty, of Loganville, GA; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and her sister, Viola Miller Fairley of Sanford.
Mrs. Hicks was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Edward Hicks, and her son, Ronnie Milton Hicks.
A graveside memorial service will be held on Sunday, April 20, 2014 at 3:00 p.m at Ephesus Baptist Church Cemetery, Dr. Harry Byrd officiating.
The family will receive visitors Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m. at Howerton & Bryan Funeral Home.
