James Walter Goodwin Jr.
DURHAM - James Walter Goodwin Jr., 65, affectionately known as “Lance”, passed away at his home of 11 Zelko Court, Durham, NC, Thursday, June 13, 2013.
James “Lance” is lovingly remembered by his wife, Tira; his children, DeWanda Allen, Sabrina Alston Sumpter (Dwight), Karen Alston McNeil (Jonathan), Vincent Dixon (LeJeania) and James Kendall Dixon (Reecak), all of Durham, NC; three step-children, Elijah Harris of Brooklyn, NY, LaCole Harris and Velvet Harris-Williams (Corey), both of Durham, NC; four sisters, Clara Jones (Wallace), Brenda Mosier, Angela McKnight, all of Durham, NC, Frances Geer of Greensboro, NC; three brothers, Edward Goodwin, Bernard Goodwin, and Anthony Goodwin, of Durham, NC.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 22 2013 at New Bethel Baptist church at 1 p.m. The family will receive friends one hour before the service at the church and at other times at the home.

John Thomas Holman "Slim"
DURHAM - John Thomas Holman "Slim", son of the late Robert and Ethel J. Holman, was born on June 8, 1944 in Durham County. He departed this life Tuesday morning, June 18, 2013 in the comfort of his home.
"Slim" is survived by one sister, Edith H. Hester; one daughter, Cheryl D. Holman; former wife and lifelong friend, Irma J. Holman; five step children; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 22, 2013, at Burthey Funeral Chapel, 1510 Fayetteville Street.

William Lona Alexander Jr.
CHAPEL HILL — William Lona Alexander Jr., 87, died peacefully on June 19, 2013 in Chapel Hill, NC. He was born in Buie, NC and raised in Raeford, NC but has been a “Chapel Hillian” since 1946. He is survived by his beloved wife, Mary of Chapel Hill, NC; three children, (Joe of Chapel Hill, Marc of Kinston, NC, and Kim of Richmond, VA); a sister, (Lois Austin of Raeford); and three brothers, (Tom of Edmonds, WA; Jim of Wallace, NC; and Bob of Dublin, GA). He was predeceased by his daughter, (Ann); by his sisters, (Ann, Edna, and Sally); and his parents, (William Sr. and Bessie).
Mr. Alexander was known locally as William, Bill, Mr. “A”, “Chief,” and affectionately by his family as Dad, Daddy, Pops, and “Paw-Paw”.
A veteran of WW-II, he served as a flagman on the destroyer USS Southerland (DDR-743) in the Pacific, where his ship was the first to drop anchor in Tokyo Bay after the Japanese surrender. Following the War, he settled in Chapel Hill to attend UNC. He managed A&P stores in Chapel Hill, Durham, Raleigh, Raeford, and Roxboro. In this work, he was most satisfied with his role as a mentor to many young people. Later in his career he worked at Belk in University Mall in Chapel Hill. For many years, he proudly held the role of Santa for the Chapel Hill Christmas Parade. An avid Tar Heel fan, he rarely missed any games broadcast on the radio and kept score of games on his own score card.
He and his family were charter members of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Chapel Hill where his services will be held on Saturday morning, June 22. Visitation will start at the church at 10:00 and the service will follow at 11:00. A family grave-side service will be held at the Raeford City Cemetery on Saturday afternoon at 4:00. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in his honor to enrich Children and Youth Ministries at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 632 Laurel Hill Road, Chapel Hill, NC 27514 or a charity of choice. Appreciation is extended to the staff at the Chapel Hill Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center who lovingly cared for Mr. Alexander for nearly two years.

Ernestine K. Edwards
CARRBORO — Mrs. Ernestine K. Edwards of Carrboro, NC passed away Tuesday, June 18th at Chapel Hill Rehabilitation Center. Mrs. Edwards was preceded in death by her husband, James G. Edwards. Mrs. Edwards is survived by one daughter, Chandra Edwards; two sons, James Edwards and Elliott Edwards; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at Jones Funeral Home, 112 S. Graham Street, Chapel Hill, today, June 21 from 6 to 7 p.m. A graveside service will be conducted at 12 noon on Saturday, June 22nd, 2013 at Carrboro Cemetery.
Donald Eugene Boswell
WILMINGTON — Donald Eugene Boswell, 78, of Wilmington passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2013 at home.
He was born on August 12, 1934 in Durham, NC to the late Luther and Jennie Clegg Boswell.
Donald is survived by his wife, Wilma Rudder Boswell; his three children, Russell Boswell of Fresno, CA, Andrew Boswell of King of Prussia, PA and E. Randy Boswell of Wayne, PA; grandchildren, Jeremy Boswell and Arleigh Boswell; brother, Randy Boswell of Durham, NC; niece, Karen Boswell of Durham, NC.
Donald was a graduate of Duke University where he received his BS Degree. He received his Masters Degree and PhD from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Donald retired from Quaker Chemical and then upon moving to Wilmington in 1988 he began his second career in real estate.
Donald was a good son, great husband, father and grandfather and a friend to many.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, June 22, 2013 at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 2107 Liberty St., Durham, NC 27703.
