Everett Newman Nickerson

September 3, 1933 – November 11, 2013

DURHAM — Everett Newman Nickerson passed away at Chapel Hill Health and Rehabilitation Center on Monday, November 11, 2013 following a brief illness. He was 80.

Everett is predeceased by his parents, Newman and Evelyn (Armstrong) Nickerson, three brothers, and one sister.

Everett is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Beverly (Weeden) Nickerson, and his daughter Sally Merryman and her husband Tad.

Everett is lovingly remembered by his nephew Brian Paulsen and wife Lindsey of Bloomington, IN and niece Vicki Paulsen of Rochester, NY, and by many other friends and family.

Everett was born in Waltham, Massachusetts on September 3, 1933. He attended Waltham High School and worked as a plumber at Honeywell Corporation and as a plumber and stockroom manager at the New England Deaconess Hospital in Boston. After retiring from the hospital in 1987/ Everett enjoyed many full years of retirement until 2011 when his health began to decline. In early 2012 he and his wife moved to Durham, NC to be closer to their daughter and her husband.

Everett was an avid fan of all Boston sports teams, especially the Bruins (hockey) and the Red Sox. He also loved learning about U.S. military history and had a special interest in the Civil War and World War II. His two most favorite hobbies were fishing and tinkering in his workshop.

The visitation will be held at University United Methodist Church, 150 East Franklin Street, Chapel Hill on Saturday, November 16 at 10:00am. A celebration of Everett’s life will occur at 11:00am immediately following the visitation. Interment at Chapel Hill Memorial Cemetery will be private.

John Michael Roberts

DURHAM - Mr. John Michael Roberts, son of Alease R. Watson and the late Robert L. Watson, was born in Durham, NC on August 8, 1948 and departed this life unexpectedly on Sunday, November 10, 2013 at his residence.

Mike, as he was called, was educated in the Durham County School System, graduating from Little River High School in 1966. He attended North Carolina Central University. He worked for GTE in North Carolina and Florida, retiring after 26 years of service. Mike served in the National Guard for six years. He enjoyed traveling, flying, playing musical instruments, computers and living life. He joined Mt. Calvary Baptist Church at an early age.

He leaves to cherish his memory and mourn his loss, his mother, Alease R. Watson, of Durham, NC; one sister, Donna Watson-McDuffie (Kenneth) of Mebane, NC; two daughters, Michelle R. McKiever of Virginia and Nicole Henderson (Titus) of Durham, NC; two grandchildren, Caleb and Lauryn; aunt, Elizabeth Roberts of Durham, NC; uncle, Alexander Watson of Greensboro, NC; along with a host of loving cousins and dear friends.

A memorial service will take place at Mount Calvary Baptist Church, Bahama, NC, on Saturday, November 16, 2013, at 11:30 am. Family will receive visitors thirty minutes prior to the service. Services are entrusted to Scarborough & Hargett Memorial Chapel and Gardens.



Annie Louise Edwards

CHAPEL HILL — Annie Louise departed this life on Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2013 at Hospice Home in Burlington, NC. She is survived by her son, Alphonso (Brenda) Carson, Durham; sisters, Cleo (Alvin) Day, Phila., PA, Edna Heath, Mary Ann (Linwood) Alston, Chapel Hill, NC and Beverly (James) Amerson, Goldsboro, NC; one brother, Earl Jr. (Marie) Watlington.

Viewing will be Friday, Nov. 15, 2013 beginning at noon at Jones Funeral Home, Graham St., Chapel Hill. Funeral service will be at St. Matthews AME Church, 5562 Swepsonville-Saxapahaw Road on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013 at 11:00. Visitation will be 10:00 am-11:00am before the service. The family will receive friends and relatives at the residence of Linwood and Mary Ann Alston, 5015 Old Greensboro Rd., Chapel Hill, NC.

Dorena Foushee Evans

CHAPEL HILL - Dorena Foushee Evans, 84, of Chapel Hill, NC died Tuesday, November 11, 2013 at the Chapel Hill Rehabilitation Center.

Survivors include her daughter, Evelyn Mattox and brother, Jeppie Foushee.

Services will be Sunday, November 17, 2013 at 2:00 pm at First Baptist Church with viewing from 1:00 to 2:00 pm. prior to the funeral.

Curtis Aaron "Mickey" Jennings

HILLSBOROUGH - Curtis Aaron "Mickey" Jennings, son of Sallie Cearnal Jennings and the late Charlie Jennings, born September 25, 1957, died in Peak Resources in Alamance November 11, 2013.

The funeral will be conducted 1:00 PM Friday in Chavis-Parker Funeral Chapel with a family visitation at 12:00PM. Burial in Mount Zion AME Memorial Gardens.

He is survived by daughters, Monique Jennings and Ashley Poteat and two grandchildren, his Mother Sallie Jennings, sister, Frances Christine Villines and two brothers, Purcell Jennings (Joan) and Nathan Jennings(Janice).

Robert "Bobby" Earnest McGhee

CHAPEL HILL - Mr. Robert “Bobby” Earnest McGhee, 57, of Chapel Hill passed away on Wednesday, November 13, 2013 at UNC Hospitals. He was the son of Frances Markham McGhee and the late James Robert McGhee.

Bobby worked at UNC Facilities and Services for 30 years before retiring in 2005. He also served as a volunteer fireman and First Responder for North Chatham Fire Department for 25 years before retiring due to illness. Bobby served on the Board of Directors for many years until his death.

He is survived by his mother, Frances McGhee of Chapel Hill; two brothers, Ray McGhee and wife Brenda of Mebane and Chris McGhee of Chapel Hill; and nephews, Wesley McGhee and Matt McGhee.

The funeral service for Bobby McGhee will be held at three o’clock Sunday, November 17, 2013 at Merritt’s Chapel United Methodist Church, with Dr. Richard Tysinger presiding. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be held before the service, at the church, from 2:00 – 2:45 pm.

Memorials may be made to the North Chatham Fire Department, 45 Morris Road, Pittsboro, NC 27312; and also to Merritt’s Chapel UMC Cemetery Fund, 1090 Farrington Point Road, Chapel Hill, NC 27517.

Bruce Delano Jones, Sr.

MATTHEWS - Bruce Delano Jones, Sr., completed his life’s journey on Tuesday 11/12/2013 at the age of 80 full active years.

He served his country in the Air Force in Army Language School where he learned to interpret Russian. From there he traveled to Japan to intercept Russian communications during the launch of Sputnik. He also served time in Turkey where he fell in love with the people and language.

He made many lifelong friends during his 30+ years at IBM, and his decades of church music director in Carrboro, NC and Kannapolis, NC and many other churches in NC. He was a Morehead finalist at the University of Chapel Hill, NC.

His final swan song was his performance of the four services hymns, which he performed for Veteran’s Day, the day before he passed. God has delivered him into a new dimension of life, and into the arms of Jesus.

He is survived by his family of son Bruce Delano Jones, Jr. (Amy), grandchildren Keegan, Preston, Hershel, Gilliann, daughter Lisa J. Aaron (Michael), and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial Service will be held Saturday 11/16/2013, 3:00 p.m. at Mineral Springs United Methodist Church. Donations in lieu of flowers will be given to his favorite charity, Union County Senior Nutrition at 610 Patton Ave, Monroe, NC 28110.

Wesley Bryant Parrish, Sr.

SANFORD - Mr. Wesley Bryant Parrish, Sr., age 89, of Sanford, NC, died Thursday, November 14, 2013 at his home.

He was born in Lee County, NC on August 29, 1924 to the late Alton Lee Parrish and Lydia Jane Dalrymple Parrish. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by brothers Gordon, Stanley, Alton and Ernest Parrish and sisters Gerline McNeill, Nettie Reid Smith and Leola Calcutt. Bryant was a self-employed plaster contractor. He served our country in the US Army during WWII.

He is survived by two sons Wesley Bryant Parrish, Jr. and wife Patti, Dwight Lee Parrish; daughter Debbie Parrish Allen; one sister Almeta McNeill all of Sanford; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Hester B. Rascoe

WINDSOR — Hester B. Rascoe of Windsor, N.C., died Nov. 7, 2013, in Greenville, N.C.

She was born June 13, 1936 in Bertie County.

She is survived by her seven children: the Rev. Diane Dash of Timberlake, Celestine Hill of Windsor, Dora Cash of Apex, Lemuel Rascoe of Pleasantville, N.J., and Theodore, Larry and Samuel Rascoe, all of Durham, 15 grandchildren, two sisters, three brothers and one aunt.

Visitation is today from 4 to 6 p.m. at Cherry’s Funeral Home, 306 E. George St., Windsor, N.C.

The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Indian Woods Missionary Baptist Church, 2330 Indian Woods Road, Windsor.

The family is being assisted by Cherry’s Funeral Home in Windsor.
