Lucille Harris Cates

Mrs. Lucille Harris Cates, 87, departed her life on November 8, 2013. 
 
She leaves her legacy of love to four generations; one son, Leon Harris, one daughter, Bettie Harris Epps (Haskel), one brother Eddie Harris, one sister Margaret Harris Burton (Edgar) all of Durham.
 
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Dr. Wilma Harris Yellock and Christine Daye.
 
The family will receive friends at her grandson's home, Mr. Kevin Yellock at 5424 Kemmont Dr., Durham, NC 27713
Funeral services will be at 1:00 pm on Thursday, November 14 at Union Baptist Church .  The viewing will be from 12 to 1:00 pm prior to funeral service.

Jacqueline Ann Johnson Hancock

Jacqueline Ann Johnson (Jackie) Hancock , 67, of Durham, passed away on Sunday, November 10, 2013.
Jackie was a native and lifelong resident of Durham. She worked as Office Manager at Hillcrest Convalescent Center in Durham from 1964 to 2003. She was preceded in death by her father, Jack Ellis Johnson.
 
Surviving are her mother, Agatha Hurley Johnson; her husband, Donald Lee Hancock; brother, David Earl Johnson; children, Darryl Lee Hancock (Gail), Kimberly Hancock Oakley (David), and Donald Scott Hancock (Carrie); grandchildren, Emily Anne Hancock, Alan Michael Hancock, Bobby Oakley; two great-grandchildren, Kymberlee Oakley and Hunter Oakley.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Hudson Funeral Chapel. Rev. J. B. Ellis will officiate.  Burial will be in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Tony Hurley, Barry Oakley, Vic Oakley, Mickey Ashley, Ricky Ashley and Mike Byrd. 
 
The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home and other times at the home, 2015 Medallion Drive.
 
The family wishes to thank Dr. Leslie Foreman, Dr. Kombiz Kline, the 6th Floor MICU Staff and the staff of Duke Hospice.

David Kent Jackson

David Kent Jackson, 67, of Durham passed away unexpectedly on October 28, 2013 at his residence.  David was born June 23, 1946 in Kalamazoo, Michigan to John R. Jackson and Jean E. Jackson.  Growing up in Kalamazoo, he graduated from Loy Norrix High School in 1964.  He then went on to graduate from Kalamazoo College, and The Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, Calif. receiving his MA in Divinity.  He entered Duke University pursuing his PHD in the Sociology of Religion before becoming an employee of Duke University where he worked for 26 years, retiring in 2010 as an IT Coordinator.

David was a sports enthusiast and a true student of the game of baseball, writing several published articles relating to the subject. His other loves included music and animals.

He is survived by a son, Joseph B. Jackson of Durham, NC, a sister, Kathleen Feezor and husband Charles of Davidson, NC, a niece, Nikole Kennerly, her husband, Timothy and their three children, Karoline, Krista and Jackson of Lexington, NC and several aunts, an uncle and cousins.  He will be missed by all.

David's family wishes to express thanks to his "Durham family" of friends and colleagues who are honoring is memory Tuesday, November 12 with a celebration of his life at Devines in Durham.  A private family memorial service will be held at a later date.

ORANGE

Betty Sue Stutts Coleman

Mrs. Betty Sue Stutts Coleman passed away peacefully Saturday, November 9, 2013, at Hock Family Pavilion.   She was a native of Orange County and attended the Orange County schools.  She retired from Liggett and Myers Tobacco Company.   Mrs. Coleman was the widow of the late Frank Coleman.

Surviving are two daughters:  Lisa Coleman Brame, Florida, and Regina C. Jones (Johnny), Hillsborough; her brother, Larry Stutts, Durham; 9 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.  She was predeceased by her parents, Omie and Frank Stutts, husband Frank, and her daughter, Vickie C. Woods.

Funeral services will be held 2 PM Wednesday in Walker’s Funeral Home Chapel.  Interment will be in Hillsborough Town Cemetery.  Visitation will be 12:30 PM-1:45 PM  Wednesday in the funeral home.

Lois Louise Pettiford

Lois Louise Pettiford, 73 of Hurdle Mills, NC, daughter of the late Doc Ragland and Onie Jones Ragland died on Monday, November 11, 2013, at Home.

The funeral will be conducted 1:00 PM Thursday in Union Grove Baptist Church with family visitation one hour before the funeral. Interment will be in Union Grove Church Cemetery.

Surviving are son, Tracy Pettiford of Greenville,SC., sisters, Catherine Ragland and Hazel Moore (Willie) of Hurdle Mills, NC; and 2 grand children.
