Darryl W. Ballentine
DURHAM - Darryl W. Ballentine has transitioned to the gates of heaven and now dwells in the kingdom of God! Darryl resided in Raleigh, NC where he passed away on Oct. 26, 2013.
He was the son of the late Kenneth W. Taborn and Lula F. Evans; one sister, one brother, and two daughters.
A viewing will be held at Holloway Memorial Funeral Home Chapel at 11:30 a.m. and the home going service at 1 p.m. on Thurs. Oct. 31, 2013. 

Mary Louise Minor Boston
DURHAM — Mary Louise Minor Boston, 77, of 1203 Landon Street, Durham, N.C. died Sunday, October 20, 2013 in Duke Regional Hospital.
Born in Durham County she was the daughter of the late Thelma Garnes Minor and Earl G. Minor.
Mrs. Boston retired from Northern Vance Senior High, Henderson, N.C. and a graduate of North Carolina Central University. She was a member of St. Joseph’s A.M.E. Church.
Mary was a member of the Satterfield Davis Club at St. Joseph’s A.M.E. Church; Future Business Leaders of America; and NCCU Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society.
Surviving are husband, Jesse Boston of the home; two sons, Claude F. Toombs of Newport News, VA and Bryson Boston of Durham, NC.; two siblings to cherish her memory, Yvette Leathers and Earl Minor of Durham, N.C.; two grandchildren, Brianna Toombs and Claude N. Toombs, Newport News VA; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was preceded in death by her sister, Shelia Minor Barnes.
A memorial service will be conducted on November 2, 2013 at 12 p.m. at St. Joseph’s A.M.E. Church, 2521 Fayetteville St. Durham, N.C. with Rev. Dr. Ronald L. Owens officiating. Scarborough & Hargett Funeral Home is assisting the Boston family. The family will receive friends at the home, 1203 Landon Street, Durham, N.C.

Mildred Louise Carden “Granny” Jackson
DURHAM — Mrs. Mildred Louise Carden “Granny” Jackson, 85, formerly of 8715 Wake Forest Hwy, died on Sunday, October 27, 2013.
Mrs. Jackson was born in Durham, to the late Lundy Buck and Ruby Johnson Carden. She was a homemaker and a member of New Grace Baptist Church. She is survived by her son, William R. Jackson Jr. (Kathy) of Durham; daughters, Mildred J. Williams (Don) of Oxford and Mary J. Williams (Thomas) of Durham; brother, Connie Carden of Durham; sister, Lillie Parker of Oxford; four grandchildren, William R. Jackson III (Michelle), Bryan Davis, Tracy Jackola (Jeremiah), Richard Jackson (Meghan); and 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Jackson.
Graveside services will be held today at 1 p.m. at Woodlawn Memorial Park. Rev. Jimmy Pulley will officiate.

Arlene Sargent Sundy
DURHAM — Mrs. Arlene Sargent Sundy, 77, died on October 27, 2013. She was born August 5, 1936 in Coral Gables, Florida to Charles and Lottie Sargent. Arlene grew up in Avon Park, Florida, and attended Avon Park High School before graduating from Florida State University in 1958.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Mason Sundy; and her daughter, Robin Sundy Tingue.
Arlene is survived by and will be missed by her son, John Sargent Sundy and his wife, Cynthia Anne Sundy, and their children, Kristin Lee Sundy and Anna Katherine Sundy of Durham, North Carolina; son-in-law, David Morrison Tingue and children, John Morrison Tingue and Darby Sargent Tingue of Wilmette, Illinois; and many in-laws and friends accumulated over the years.
She and Bob started a family in Atlanta, Georgia and lived in Jacksonville and Miami, Florida before relocating to Weston, Connecticut in 1969. There she was active in the Norfield Congregational Church and other civic activities.
Arlene was trained as a teacher and taught briefly in Jacksonville, Florida before being married. She resumed her teaching career in the 1980's in the Norwalk, Connecticut public schools. She retired to Durham, North Carolina in 1999.
Arlene remained an avid Seminole football fan throughout her life.
A family memorial service will be scheduled in the future.

Clifton Nathaniel Trice 'Mr. Tee'
DURHAM — Clifton Nathaniel Trice 'Mr. Tee',  86, departed his life on October 24, 2013. He is survived by his daughter, Brenda Denise Trice-Jenks (Brie); one stepson; one grandson; one granddaughter; three great grandsons; three great granddaughters; and a host of other relatives and friends. 
Funeral service will be held at Mt. Sinai Missionary Baptist Church on Friday, November 1, 2013 at 3:00 with visitation at 2:00.

Raymond Dennis deFriess
MEBANE — Mr. Raymond Dennis deFriess, 60, went home to the Lord on October 28. A native of Rochester, New York, Raymond moved to Chapel Hill in 1960. He graduated from Chapel Hill High in 1971. After high school, he began a 44 year career as a service engineer on X-Ray equipment, finishing as a senior service engineer at Radon Medical Imaging. Raymond dedicated over 40 years of service to South Orange Rescue Squad, serving as chief for 25 years. He was an active member of Cane Creek Baptist Church. His favorite thing to do was cook for those he loved.
Raymond is survived by: his wife of 29 years, Pamela Jenkins deFriess, Mebane, NC; his daughter, Natalie deFriess Rigsbee (Kevin), Haw River, NC; his son, Jonathan Ray deFriess, Mebane, NC; his mother, Lynda Smith deFriess, Asheboro, NC; brothers: Fred deFriess, Robert deFriess, Asheboro, NC, and James deFriess, Morganton, NC; sisters: Frances Fier, Taunton, MN, and Donna Evans, Pittsboro, NC; many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews; and special friends, Paul and Doris Cook, Mebane, NC. He is predeceased by his father, Francis Byers deFriess.

Mack Arthur Harrelson
CEDAR GROVE — Mack Arthur Harrelson, 67, of Cedar Grove, NC died Sunday, October 27, 2013, at home. He was the son of Catherine Torain Harrelson and the late Phillip Harrelson.
The Funeral will be conducted 2 p.m. Friday in Warrens Chapel Baptist Church. Family Visitation one hour before the funeral 1 until 2 p.m.
Survivors are a daughter, Ashley Coble; two grandchildren, Chancellor and Denton Woody of Burlington; and his mother, Catherine Paylor Torain Harrelson of the home; brothers, Phillip Johnson Jr.(Joycelyn) of Baltimore, Md., George Garland Harrelson of Cedar Grove, and Effric Harrelson (Jeraldine) of Jacksonville, FL; sisters, Wanda Whitted (Eddie) of Cedar Grove, Minister  Sandra C. Harrellson of Washington, DC and Jeraline Harrelson of Cedar Grove.

Joseph L. “Joe” Biggs
CHESTERFIELD, VA - Joseph L. “Joe” Biggs, 87, of Chesterfield, went to be with the Lord Tuesday October 29, 2013. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 58 years, Beryl Biggs; and granddaughter, Laura NeSmith Powell. He is survived by his three daughters and their spouses, Sharon and Joe Hoyle, Cathy and Phil Shaw and Jody and Richard Corrigan, all of Chesterfield, VA.; grandchildren, Brittany Hoyle Powell, Keaton Hoyle, Megan NeSmith Watkins, Mark NeSmith and Bronson Shaw; great grandson, Liam Watkins; one sister, Alice Komaromy of Charlotte, NC. After graduating from Durham High, class of 1944, he served two years in the Navy. Upon his return, he attended Duke University. He proudly received his Bachelors Degree in Electrical Engineering and moved to Richmond, VA in 1950, working briefly for Virginia Power. The next 33 years of his engineering career were spent at DuPont working in various areas of the plant as a supervisor. He retired from DuPont and began a second career selling real estate. An avid golfer, pilot and die-hard Republican he had a passion for politics, serving as campaign manager for various candidates for local and state elections. He held a strong belief in giving back to the community and served on the Board of Zoning Appeals in Chesterfield County from 1975-2011. Serving 13 successful years as Chairman of the Board of Zoning Appeals, Joe had a big heart, a wide grin and lived life to the fullest. He will be missed by his family. The family will receive friends 2 to 3 p.m., Thursday at Morrissett Funeral & Cremation Service, 6500 Iron Bridge Road (Rte. 10). His funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be 11 a.m. Friday at Maplewood Cemetery in Durham, NC. Terry Wade Blalock Sr.
SNOW HILL, NC — Terry Wade Blalock Sr., died Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC. He was born on November 30, 1951 to James Gaddis Blalock Sr., and Reba Haddock Blalock of Timberlake, NC, both of whom predecease him. He was also predeceased by his step-fathers, Wyatt L. Parker Jr., and Charlie Carraway of Farmville, NC.
Terry was a member of Marlboro Original Free Will Baptist Church in Farmville.
He is survived by his wife, Vivian Shackleford Blalock of the home; daughter, Renea Blalock of Goldsboro; and son, Terry Wade Blalock Jr., of the home; two sisters, Faye (Mike) Staton of Durham, NC, and Jean (Jimmy) Harrison of Portsmouth, VA; four brothers, James “Buddy” (Cecelia) Blalock and Sammy (Lisa) Blalock, both of Fountain, NC, Randy (Marilyn) Blalock of Farmville, NC, and Wyatt (Joann) Parker of Bogue, NC; one grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.
The family received friends at the Farmville Funeral Home on Sunday evening from 6 until 8 p.m.
Graveside services were held on Monday, October 28, at 2 P.M. at Hollywood Cemetery in Farmville by Reverend Marty Greer.

TABB, VA — Louise B. Spangler, 93, a native & longtime resident of Durham, passed away Tuesday, August 20, 2013. 
A Memorial service will be held 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 1, at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 1320 Umstead Rd., Durham, by Rev. Tara Lain. Her ashes will later be placed in the Columbarium at Maplewood Cemetery.
