Preston "PD" Daniels Jr.
DURHAM — Preston Daniels passed away in the early wee hours of the morning in his sleep October 13, 2013. He was just 70 years old. He was born November 29, 1942 to Preston B. Daniels Sr. & Mary Frances Mills Daniels in Durham, NC. Preston was raised in Durham most of his life after the death of his mother. When he was a small child Preston went to live with his father in Bakersfield, Calf. until he was 16 and returned to Durham, NC to be with his grandmother until her death. Preston worked various jobs. As a young man he worked with the Scarborough & Hargett Funeral Home for many years until he came to work for the State of North Carolina and the County of North Carolina until his retirement in 2005. Preston started his own business at Friendly City Barber shop shining shoes until his death.
Preston met his wife of nearly 20 years where she worked. They started out as friends and bloomed in to marriage. They have no children together. His parents and grandmother preceded him in death. He leaves to mourn his death his wife; and many cherish friends over the years.

Catherine "Sis" Nunn Dill
DURHAM — Catherine "Sis" Nunn Dill died on October 18, 2013. She is survived by a daughter; two grand children; and three great grand children; one sister; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The service will be held at Holloway Memorial Funeral Home Chapel on Wednesday, October 23, 2013 from 6 until 8 p.m.
DURHAM — Funeral services for Raymond Jones, 66, "The Photographer", will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Victory at Calvary Covenant Ministries, 500 N. Driver Ave. Family visitation will be held an hour prior to the service.
Survivors include: wife, Patricia L. Jones; son, Bryant Jones; daughter, Harriett Jones; five grandchildren; sisters, Rhoda Blunt, Patsy Green.

Bennie William Meeks
DURHAM — Bennie William Meeks, 70, departed his life on October 17, 2013. He is survived by his step mother, Katrina Meeks; two daughters, Jacqueline Meeks and Cathy Meeks-Jackson; two sons, Terrence Meeks and Bryan Ellison; three step-children, Tanya Dennis, Tracy Drinker, and Torey Drinker (deceased); two brothers; William Hopson and Michael Peaks; three grand children, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Services will be at Mount Gilead Baptist Church, Durham, N.C. on Tuesday, October 22nd at 1 p.m. with visitation at noon.
Ollie Mae Scott Peterson
BAHAMA - Mrs. Ollie Mae Scott Peterson, 72, died on Thursday, October 17, 2013 at her home. She was born in Williamson, WV to Fay and Esther Scott. Mae was born into a family of four children, three girls and one boy.
The family was very active in the Chattaroy Old Fashioned Baptist Church. Mae went on to attend Chattaroy High School where she was active as a cheerleader, and she played sports. She met her husband, Corbin Peterson, in Portsmouth VA. They had one daughter, Alicia, who died at birth, 6/12/1973, and one son, Andrew Lee Peterson of Creedmoor, NC. He is an attorney in Raleigh, NC. She loved her grandchildren dearly, Alexander Taft and Kelcey Grier. The sun rose and set on them. She is survived by two sisters, Elizabeth Gay Holloway of Newport News, VA and Pansy Joyce Belcher of Appomattox, VA.
No services will be performed, and her request was no flowers.

Ophelia Grandy Spells
DURHAM — Mother Ophelia Grandy Spells, 94, passed peacefully on October 16, 2013 at her home.
She leaves to cherish her memory, four children: Leroy Spells (Mary) of White Plains, NY, Pastor Verla Spells Hamm of Richmond, VA, Patricia Spells Springs (Donald) of Durham, NC, Chester R. Spells Jr. (Pam) of Durham, NC; 17 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; eight great great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be on Monday, October 21, 2013 at Union Baptist Church, 904 N. Roxboro St, Durham, NC at 12 noon with visitation at 11 a.m.
Arrangements are entrusted to Scarborough and Hargett Memorial Chapels and Gardens.
Helen Mae Penland Blalock
HILLSBOROUGH — Mrs. Helen Mae Penland Blalock, 70, died Friday, October 18, 2013, in UNC Hospitals. She attended the Orange County school. She was a health care aide where needed.
Surviving are her husband, Larry V. Blalock; her daughter, Susie Burgner (Richard), Hillsborough; two granddaughters, Emily Burgner and Erin Burgner; six brothers: Billy Penland (Barbara), Bobby Penland (Patricia), Doug Penland (Sandra), Wayne Penland (Mary Alice), Donald Penland, and Glenn Penland. She was predeceased by her brother, Danny; and her sister, Patricia.
The graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday in Little River Presbyterian Church Cemetery.
Gloria Campbell Britton
CHAPEL HILL — Funeral Services For Ms. Gloria Campbell Britton (67) of Chapel Hill, N.C. will be conducted on Monday at 12 p.m. at Faith Tabernacle Oasis of Love. The family will meet with their friends one hour before the funeral services.
Survivors are one son, Mr. Thomas W. Britton; two daughters, Ms. Angela Britton & Mrs. Laveta Massey (Daron); three sisters, Ms. Stella Clark, Ms. Gloria Oldham, Ms. Mary Snipes; 10 grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Chester Lloyd Crabtree
HILLSBOROUGH — Chester Lloyd Crabtree, 85, of 4609 Saint Mary's Road, Hillsborough, NC, passed away October 19th at his home after an extended illness.
Born December 9, 1927, Chester was the son of the late Artelia Holden Watkins Crabtree and Thomas Frank Crabtree.
Chester spent most of his life in Orange County and was a member of New Sharon United Methodist Church. He was a retired truck driver, farmer and factory worker. Chester was a long-distance truck driver for Pilot Freight Carriers and received several awards for safe driving. Chester attended Hillsboro High School and served in the U.S. Army 1946-49. He was a graduate of the N.C. State University Truck Driver Training School.
Chester loved NASCAR, good food, bluegrass music, vegetable gardening, mowing his lawn and sharing stories from his decades as a truck driver. He also loved going to Highway 70 Barbecue in Hillsborough to see his "breakfast buddies." Their friendship to Chester is appreciated deeply.
Chester was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Sue Hill Crabtree; a sister, Ollie Mae Roberts; and a brother, Thomas Rhone Crabtree. He is survived by a large extended family including sons, Robert Lloyd Crabtree of Hillsborough, and Thomas Hill Crabtree and wife, Gayle of Spartanburg, SC; grandchildren, Travis Lloyd Crabtree and wife, Lisa of Haw River, Lauren Crabtree Anderson and husband, Alex of Spartanburg, SC, and Kayla Hill Crabtree of Spartanburg, SC; and great-grandchildren, Hunter and Ryan Crabtree of Haw River. Survivors also include Chester's brothers, Doug Crabtree and wife, Pat, and Lewis Crabtree and wife, Faye, all of Hillsborough; sisters, Mildred Thompson of Burlington, Clara Roebuck of Conroe, TX, Betty Rose Allison and husband, Earl of Chapel Hill, and Louise Yow and Lib Davis, both of Hillsborough; and brother-in-law, Richard Roberts of Hillsborough. Chester also had numerous nieces and nephews.
The family also wishes to thank Chester's caregiver, Jennifer Daily, for her tireless work and dedication, as well as her friendship.
Graveside services will be held Tuesday, October 22nd, 11 a.m., at New Sharon United Methodist Church cemetery, 1601 New Sharon Church Road, Hillsborough 27278. Reverend Jeff Nash will officiate. Following the services, the family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall.

CHAPEL HILL — Born Dec 27, 1940 to the late Blanche Baldwin and John E. Morgan, John Edward Morgan died Sunday, Oct 13, 2013. Services will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, Oct 26, 2013, at St Paul AME Church, 101 N. Merritt Mill Rd., Chapel Hill.
There will be a viewing from 5 to 7 p.m. at Jones Funeral Home on Fri, Oct 25, 112 S. Graham St.
Ed, best known as “Squeaky”, is survived by daughter, Adonica Morgan; brothers, Benjamin Morgan & Lannie Parrish; sister, Richelle P. Watson; and many nieces, nephews, relatives & friends.
