Leonor Ortiz Childers
DURHAM — Leonor Ortiz Childers, 51, of Durham, NC, went to be with the Lord and to be reunited with her parents on June 30, 2014. Leonor was born on May 14, 1963, in Milwaukee, WI, a daughter of the late Augustine Jr. (“Ernie”) and Carmen Reyes Ortiz. Leonor was raised in Tampa, FL, where she excelled in amateur sports and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1981. Leonor went on to graduate from Mercer University in Macon, GA, in 1985, where she was a Mercer Ambassador, was elected to the student government, and went undefeated her senior year in women’s tennis. She then earned a master’s degree from the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill in 1987. Leonor worked as a scientist for ManTech Environmental and its predecessor organizations and then for the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), during which she traveled extensively in Central and South America on behalf of the EPA. While continuing to work for the EPA, Leonor attended the UNC School of Law. After graduating in 2000, Leonor opened a solo law practice, which primarily served the Latino community in Durham and surrounding counties. She received the Excellence in Community Service Award from the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund (MALDEF) in 2004. Leonor also was as an adjunct professor in the Research, Reasoning, Writing, and Advocacy (RRWA) program at the UNC School of Law and served on the Board of Directors of the Carolina Law Alumni Association.
Leonor is survived by her husband Jeff and her beloved children Javier, 8, Miranda, 8, Ava, 6, and Julian, 6, of the home, and her faithful Shar-Pei, Carolina. She also is survived by brother Ernie (Jonna) of Conroe, TX, sister Verna (Lew) of Tampa, FL, sister Punky (Tom) of Hillsborough, NC, sister Peachy (Terry) of Reynolds, GA, and brother Tommy of Tampa, FL, as well as several nieces and nephews and many friends through her different walks in life.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff at Duke University Hospital for their devoted care of Leonor over the past six and a half years, in particular Drs. Carmelo Milano and Joseph Rogers, who gave her the opportunity to see her children grow, and Drs. Chet Patel, Adrian Hernandez, and Michael Felker who followed her over the years; Laura Blue, Kevin Cox, and colleagues in the LVAD office, who were with her every step of the way; her dear friend Dr. Gowthami Arepally; Drs. Jennifer Horan, Andrew Alspaugh, and Cameron Wolfe; Dr. Kimberly Blackwell; Dr. Maria Small; Tracy Berger of the Duke Cancer Patient Support Program; Jean Hartford-Todd and Maureen Soper for their support of the children; and the nurses, nursing assistants, and staff of the 3100 and 3300 units, in particular Belle, Joanna, and Shayne, and those in the 7 East and 7 West towers of the Duke Heart Center. The family also would like to thank Leonor’s caregivers for their loyal support over the years, in particular, Rosemary Chepkwony and Lucy Mata and family.
A service remembering and celebrating the life of Leonor will be held at the Summit Church, 2031 West Club Boulevard, Durham, NC 27705, on July 5, 2014, at 11 am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Ernie and Carmen Ortiz Memorial Scholarship, Mercer University, Office of University Advancement, 1400 Coleman Avenue, Macon, GA 31207 or the Duke Cancer Patient Support Program, DUMC 3139, Durham, NC 27710.

Joseph Glasco Jr.
DURHAM — Funeral Services for Mr. Joseph Glasco Jr. (57) of Durham, NC, will be conducted on Wednesday at 1:00 pm from the United For Christ Church. The family will meet with their friends 30 mins before the funeral services. Survivors are his mother and stepfather, Mrs. Annie Mae Edwards & Mr. J.C. Edwards; 1 sister, Ms. Darlene Glasco; 3 brothers, Mr. Gregory Glasco, Mr. Ray Glasco, Mr. Garry Glasco; 2 sisters-in-law, Mrs. Tracy Glasco, Mrs. Isir P. Glasco; and a host of aunts and uncles and other relatives and friends.
Final care and arrangements are entrusted to Hanes Funeral Service.

Carl Thomas Lyons
DURHAM — Mr. Carl Thomas Lyons, 70, passed on June 29, 2014 at Duke University Medical Center of Durham.
Surviving relatives include his loving mother, Nannie Pearl Daye Lyons; two sisters, Geraldine Lyons and Lynda P. Lyons Thomas.
Funeral service will take place on Thursday, July 3, 2014 at Mt. Level Missionary Baptist Church, 316 Hebron Road, Durham, NC 27704, beginning at 1 p.m. A visitation with family and friends will be held one hour prior to the service.

Freddie Breeze
HILLSBOROUGH — Freddie Breeze, 97, of Hillsborough, NC died on Monday, June 30, 2014.
Funeral will be conducted Thursday July 3, 2014 at 12:00 p.m. at Lattisville Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Visitation will be held 11:30 a.m.
Surviving are daughters, Vera Breeze (Howard), Mary Breeze, Hazel Jones (Henry) and Shirley Wells (Nathaniel), all of Hillsborough, NC.
Public viewing will be Wednesday 10:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Chavis-Parker Funeral Home.

Joseph Byrd
HILLSBOROUGH — Joseph Byrd, age 83, son of the late Irving and Mary Elizabeth Byrd Johnson died Sunday, June 29, 2014, at Strafford House in Chapel Hill, NC.
The funeral will be conducted 2:00 PM Thursday in First Community Baptist Church. Family visitation one hour before the funeral in the church. Burial in Rosewood Cemetery.
Survivors are his wife, Shirley Byrd of the home, sons, Darryl Byrd, Rodney Byrd, Bryon Byrd, Terry Byrd and wife Ann, all of California, and Jeremy Byrd of North Carolina, and daughter, Gayle Byrd of California.
Public viewing will be Wednesday, 10:00 AM until 7:00 PM in Chavis-Parker Funeral Home.


Lisa Renee Staughan Hardie
BROWNS SUMMIT — Lisa Renee Staughan Hardie, 50, of Browns Summit, passed away suddenly on Thursday, June 27, 2014 at her home.
Lisa was a caring and loving daughter, mother and friend. She loved helping people with whatever problem they had and was a friend to all. She was a joy and fun to be around and loved all her extended family. She was an uplifting person to those in need. Lisa was born in Durham County and graduated from Jordan High School. She had just recently gone into nursing and received her medical assistant degree. She was a member of Triad Baptist Church in Greensboro.
Lisa is survived by her son, Blake Greene (Ashley Patterson) of Greensboro; grandchild, Ashlynn Patterson; mother and stepfather, Mary and Dale Howard of Mebane; father, Earl Staughan of Fla.; stepsisters, Sharon Durham of Mebane, Teresa Burns of Fla.
The funeral service will be Thursday, July 3, 2014 at 2:00 PM in the McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Mebane.
Officiating will be Rev. Bobby Tate and Rev. James Tester. Burial will follow in Lebanon United Methodist Church Cemetery in Mebane. The family will receive friends at McClure Funeral Home in Mebane from 12 noon until 2 PM prior to the service. Other times they will be at the residence of Mary and Dale Howard, 7510 York Loop Rd., Mebane, NC.
