Ruth Hood Bennett
DURHAM - On Friday, August 30, 2013, Ruth Hood Bennett was called home to receive her eternal reward.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Atlas Bennett; and a son, Harold Atlas Bennett. She leaves seven children to cherish her precious memories, Beverly Bennett, James (Ella) Bennett, Jonathon Bennett, Thomas (Jacqueline) Bennett, Brenda (Lonnie) Miles, Vanessa (Allen) Jones and Phyllis Bennett; one brother, Dr. William Hood (NY); brother-in-law, Bracie Washington (Gastonia); 25 grandchildren, 30 great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren and host of other relatives and friends. 
Funeral service will be Thursday at St. James Baptist Church at 12 noon with visitation at 11 a.m.

Lucius “Bob Jack” Hedgspeth Sr.
ROUGEMONT – Mr. Lucius “Bob Jack” Hedgspeth Sr., age 96½ , son of the late Frank and Vena Hedgspeth of Granville County, was born May 11, 1917 and departed this life on August 31, 2013 peacefully at Hock Family Pavilion/Duke Hospice, at 7:35 p.m.
He leaves to cherish his memory four sons, Lucius Jr., Wallace, Stanley, and Linward; two daughters, Mary Lee Hedgspeth Outlaw and Janice Hedgspeth Hester; two sisters, Mrs. Annie H. Collins and Mrs. Kathalena H. C. Foster; 13 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at the Greater Clegg’s Chapel Community Missionary Baptist Church in Timberlake, NC on Saturday, September, 7, 2013. Viewing will be from 11 a.m. until 12 p.m. Family will receive visitation from 12 p.m. until 1 p.m., with funeral services starting at 1 p.m. Final rest will be in the Harris Family Cemetery on Poole Road, Rougemont, NC.

Joanne Gmaz Vann
DURHAM — Mrs. Joanne Gmaz Vann, 91, of Durham NC, passed away peacefully at the Carolina House of Chapel Hill, Sunday, September 1, 2013.
Born February 7, 1922 in Dayton, Ohio, she was the second of two children born to Anna and Peter Gmaz. Raised in Dayton, she was a first generation American, both parents having immigrated from Croatia, Yugoslavia. She attended Duquesne University as an arts and science major and was a featured performer with the university’s world famous Tamburitzans. It was performing for visiting air cadets where she met Arthur Vann II, and they were married January 4, 1944.
She is survived by 11 of her 12 children, Cynthia, Susan Galluzzo (Tino), Ellen Pearsall (Phillip), Sarah Wyne (Chris), Gooche Stricklin, Liza Smith (Cameron), Woody (Lisa), Peter (Cari), Amy Efland (Mark), John and David/Doobie; 17 grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Vann II; her son, Arthur Vann III; her parents, and brother, Bill Gmaz.
Visitation will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, September 5th, at Immaculate Conception Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11. The burial will be private.
The family will join friends immediately following at a reception at the Washington Duke Inn. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's organization of your choice.
The family would like to express our heartfelt thanks to the staff and caregivers at Carolina House of Chapel Hill for their compassionate and professional care of our extraordinary mother over these last several years.

Lorena Chambers Winburn
BURLINGTON — Mrs. Lorena Chambers Winburn, age 89, of Burlington, died Monday, September 2, 2013 at Alamance Regional Medical Center after several months of failing health.
Born in Person County, she was the daughter of the late Wilcie Chambers and the late Etta Whitt Chambers and was married for 69 years to Edward Lee Winburn, who survives. She was a career homemaker and also was a sitter for children and medical patients.  She was a longtime and very active member of Wicker St. Baptist Church and enjoyed gardening and tending to her roses. 
Mrs. Winburn is survived by her husband, Edward, of the home; a daughter, Caroline McKeithen and her husband, Dave, of Live Oakes, FL; two sons, Vic Winburn and his wife, Joyce, of Hickory, NC and Dennis Winburn Sr. and his wife, Debra, of Burlington; six grandchildren, Nicole Heiser, Amy McLaughlin, Kameron Winburn, Jonathan McKeithen, Allie Rae Winburn and Dennis “Ray” Winburn, Jr.; two step grandchildren, Joshua Patton and Joanna Patton; nine great grandchildren; three step great grandchildren; three sisters, Ethel Aiken of Bahama, NC, Irene Mooney of Durham and Ann Abernathy and her husband, John, of Miami, FL; and two brothers, John Chambers and his wife, Nell, of Burlington and Mack Chambers of Rougemont, NC. She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Wilcie Edward Winburn; and twin daughters, Mary Lou Winburn and Betty Sue Winburn.
The funeral service will be conducted at 11, Friday, September 6, 2013 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Ricky Lewis. There will be a graveside service at 3 p.m., Friday at Blalock and Chambers Family Cemetery in Rougemont, NC. The family will receive friends from 6-8, Thursday evening at the funeral home and other times at her husband, Edward’s, residence: 2680 S. Mebane St, Apt 308. The family will also receive friends following the graveside service at her sister, Ethel Aiken’s, home, 7121 Blalock Rd., Bahama, NC.

Maggie Mildred Brogden Currin
CREEDMOOR - Maggie Mildred Brogden Currin, 84, a lifetime resident of Granville County, went home to be with the Lord Sunday, September 1, 2013 at Duke Regional Hospital in Durham.
A native of Granville County, the daughter of the late Coy Lewis and Pinkie Grissom Brogden, she lived her life to serve the Lord and was a devoted member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Creedmoor. She retired from Murdoch Center in Butner after 25 years of service.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, September 6, 2013 at Fellowship Baptist Church, 1512 Beaver Dam Road, Creedmoor, N.C. 27522 by Scottie Currin, Rev. Dan Hill and Rev. Thomas Lamm. Burial will be in Carolina Memorial Gardens in Creedmoor.
Surviving are her loving husband of 67 years, R.M. Currin of Creedmoor; two sons, Terry Currin (Nancy) of Durham, Richard Currin of Creedmoor; a daughter, Jeanette Bass (Kenny) of Durham; grandchildren, Scottie Currin (Allison), Anita Watkins, Crystal Hicks (Al), Chad Bass (Sarah), Adam Bass, Anna Bass; great grandchildren, Meagan Watkins, Emily Watkins, Alyssa Currin, Zachary Currin, Emma Currin; and a brother, William Brogden.

Robert Keith Evans (Bobby)
CREEDMOOR — Robert Keith Evans (Bobby), 57, of Wake County passed away Monday, September 2, 2013 at his home. 
A native of Durham County, he was the son of Shirley Keith Evans and the late John Evans. He enjoyed riding motorcycles and was a past President of the Concerned Bikers Association of Creedmoor.
Funeral Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 5, in the Eakes Funeral Chapel, 834 Main Street, Creedmoor, NC. Burial will be in the Olive Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, 3024 Olive Grove Church Road, Creedmoor, NC. Fillice Revels-Tyler
OXFORD — Fillice Revels-Tyler, 80, a resident of 609 New Commerce Dr., died Monday at Hock Family Pavilion. She was the daughter of the late William Hester Sr. and Mary Kittrell Hester. She was a retired nurse.
She is survived by a husband, Eddie Tyler; a son, Marshall "Barry" Revels, Durham, NC; seven grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, September 6, at 1 p.m. at Orange Grove Missionary Baptist Church by Rev. Hubert Dickerson. Burial will be in Beechwood Cemetery.
Viewing will begin Thursday, September 5, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Wright Funeral Home in Oxford. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to services at the church.

Jerrie Frances Claire Wright Flaugher
CHAPEL HILL - Jerrie Frances Claire Wright Flaugher, born May 1, 1925 in Mt. Moriah, Missouri, died September 2, 2013 at her home in Chapel Hill, NC. A graduate of the University of Minnesota, she was a flight attendant with Continental Airlines. She was married in 1946 to William J Flaugher  She taught elementary school in Indiana, Virginia, Alaska and Okinawa, Japan. The family moved to North Carolina in 1970 after her husband retired from the U.S. Air Force as a Lt. Col. For many years as director of the Carrboro Red Cross, she provided water safety instruction and lifeguard training. She was preceded in death by her husband. She is survived by her daughter, Jo Carrol Elaine Hill; and her sons, William Robert Flaugher and wife, Sol Maria, Brigadier General Jonathan Scott Flaugher, USAF and wife, Merle, Steven Michael Flaugher and wife, Michele, Thomas Carlton Flaugher and wife, Amee, David James Flaugher and wife, Alison, Maj. Douglas Bryan Flaugher, USA and wife, Tammie, Sgt. Mark Alan Flaugher, Apex P.D. and wife, Kimberli; by  grandchildren, Frank, Capt. USA, Jordan, 2nd Lt. USAF, Hannah, Carlie, Evans, Hunter, Will, Maggie, Samantha, Laney, Eli Bean and Alaina; and by great grandchildren, Miles and Irene. Her ashes will be interred with her husband, Lt. Col. William J Flaugher, USAF, in Arlington National Cemetery. She was first diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2008 and survived five and a half years, thanks to the staff of the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. Bettye Thompson Johnson
HILLSBOROUGH — Bettye Thompson Johnson, age 73, born to the late James and Lena Thompson, died in Hillcrest Convalescent Center in Durham, August 30, 2013.
The funeral will be conducted Thursday, 1 p.m. in Russell Memorial Church in Durham, NC. Burial in Paynes' Chapel AME Church Cemetery in Hillsborough, NC.
Survivors are her husband, Theodore R. Johnson; daughter, Sheree' Harshaw Parker; and son, Shelton Thompson, all of Hillsborough, NC; step daughters, Diane Tam of Howell, NJ and Lisa Dailey of Brooklyn, NY; one sister, Ruth Sneed of Hillsborough, NC; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Garl Edwin Nichols
CHAPEL HILL — Mr. Garl Edwin Nichols, 69, husband of Barbara Hogan Nichols, died Monday morning at Duke University Hospital.
Mr. Nichols was born in Olive Hill, KY. He was educated in the Olive Hill schools, and from high school enrolled in the United States Air Force. He spent 20 years serving with the USAF, and upon retiring, embarked on a new career as a Deputy with the Orange County Sheriff Department. After 20 more years of service, Garl retired a second time. He was a member of Orange United Methodist Church in Chapel Hill. He would have celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary in December.
In addition to his wife Barbara, Garl is survived by his sons, James Edwin Nichols, and his wife, Connie, and Glen Hogan Nichols, all of Chapel Hill, NC; sister, Diane Nichols Beane of Olive Hill, KY; grandchildren, Trey Ryan Nichols, and his wife, Savannah, Chelsey Abigail Nichols, and Tyler Clay Nichols, who were the love of his life; several aunts and uncles; and his nephew, Brian.
Mr. Nichols was preceded in death by his father, Ernest Nichols; mother, Stella Carrol Nichols; and numerous aunts and uncles.
A graveside memorial service with full military honors will be held on Wednesday, September 4, 2013 at 1 p.m. in the Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens. Officiating will be Rev. Ned Thorpe and Rev. Ken Hall Jr.
The family will greet friends and visitors immediately following the service. Flowers are acceptable, or memorials may be directed to Orange United Methodist Church, 1220 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd, Chapel Hill, NC 27516.

Merle E. Earnest
TIMBERLAKE - Mr. Merle E. Earnest, 77, passed away early Tuesday morning, September 3, 2013 at his home. He was born in Goodsprings, Alabama to the late John and Quille Earnest. He served in the Air Force. Prior to retirement, Mr. Earnest was employed by GTE. Merle enjoyed playing golf, gardening, hunting, and fishing. 
Merle is survived by his wife, Madeline Earnest; son, Jack Burgess Jr.; grandchildren, Jack Burgess III and Brian Burgess; and a sister, Billie Ruth Dorning.
A memorial service will be held 12 p.m., Friday at Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham with Rev. David Pryor officiating. Family will receive friends prior to the service from 10:30 a.m. till 11:4 5a.m.

Rev. Prince Keith Shaw Sr.
KINGSTREE, SC - Funeral service for Rev. Prince Keith Shaw Sr., will be conducted on Wednesday, September 4, 2013, from the St. Paul United Methodist Church, Thurgood Marshall Hwy., Kingstree, South Carolina.
Rev. Prince Keith Shaw passed on Friday, August 31, 2013 at his residence in Kingstree, South Carolina after an illness.
He was a son of the late General Shaw Sr. and Sullar McCrea Shaw and the husband of the late Ruby Lee McFadden Shaw.
Local survivors include one sister, Vavian Morris; and two brothers; Phillip Shaw and Isaac Shaw, all of Durham, NC.
