James Quentin Davis Mallard
DURHAM — James Quentin Davis Mallard died surrounded by his family Tuesday evening in Chapel Hill. He was born on June 3, 1949 to the late Junius Henry Mallard, Sr., and Elizabeth Davis Mallard. Q, as he was known by his family and friends, grew up in Durham and graduated from Jordan High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of South Carolina and an MBA from Wake Forest University. He worked in mortgage banking until his recent retirement.
Q was a Renaissance man. He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed cooking and baking for his friends and family, was an accomplished woodworker, and a natural gardener. He excelled at making and keeping friends. Above all else, he valued time spent with his family, loving them with his whole heart and cherishing their love in return.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy McKee, and his loving children, Davis, John (wife Taylor), Anna, and Maggie. Also, his devoted stepsons, Winder Holeman (wife Estefi Elias) and Ran Holeman (wife Katie), and his stepgrandsons, George, and James, to be born May 2014. He is also survived by his brother, Henry Mallard, and his wife, Lou.
Q made the world a better place by his presence.
Memorial Services for Q will be celebrated 3 pm Saturday at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, 82 Kimberly Dr., Durham. The Reverend Robert K. Kaynor will preside. Sarah Lucile Amey Malone
DURHAM — Sarah Lucile Amey Malone, 92, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 30, 2014 at the Brian Center in Durham. She was born to the late Levi and Emma Amey on November 20, 1921. Over her career she worked for United Van Lines packing household goods. She also served as a housekeeper and a health care provider for the elderly. She was a faithful member of Mt. Calvary Church of Christ and also attended First Congregation Church of Christ in her later years. She was best known for her amazing sweet potato pies. Surviving Lucile are her nieces, Mary (Edward) and Eunice (Edward); great-niece, Annelyse Amey (Chris); great-nephew, Lonnie Amey; great-great-nephew and -niece, Anthony and Nia Amey; one adopted niece, Gwendolyn Claiborne; cousins, Emma Gentry, John Daye, Allen Harris, and Dwight Pettiford. She was predeceased by her sister, Burma Amey, and nephew, Edward L. Amey. The family will receive friends for viewing from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Thursday, April 3, 2014 at Burthey Funeral Services. The funeral will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, April 4, 2014 at Burthey Funeral Services, officiated by Rev. Kelvin Belle. Interment will follow at Glennview Memorial Park, Durham, N.C.


Michael Joseph Allender
HILLSBOROUGH — Michael Joseph Allender, 54, died Wednesday, April 2, 2014 at Duke Regional Hospital. He was born in Lexington, KY, son of Mary Ellen Gentry Allender and the late John Spalding Allender. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his brother, Matthew Spalding Allender. He was an Electrical Engineer with Star Electric in NC.
Mr. Allender is survived by his wife, Shirley Hughes Allender; daughter, Ashley Marie Allender; son, Aaron Michael Allender, all of Durham; brothers, John Rodes Allender (Cynthia) of Brentwood, TN, Stephen Gentry Allender (Gay) of Johnstown, OH; sisters, Nancy A. Jones of Versailles, KY, Lynn A. Tipton (Wesley) of Corbin, KY; mother-in-law, Avenell Hughes; several nieces, nephews and many friends.
A memorial service will be held 1 p.m., Saturday at Clements Funeral Chapel in Hillsborough with Rev. Leah Rade officiating. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The family would like to thank the many nurses, doctors, family and friends who provided such great and loving care for Michael.

Frances Hartwick Tibbo
CHAPEL HILL — Frances Hartwick Tibbo, widow of Thomas Morris Tibbo, died in Chapel Hill, NC at age 91 on Friday, March 28, 2014 after a long illness. She was born in Brockton, Mass. on April 27, 1922 to Helen Robbins Kiel and Frank Kiel and grew up in Avon, Mass. with her brother, George Robbins Kiel. Frances was a graduate of Framingham State College and a US Army Veteran of World War II. She worked as a dietitian for more than 30 years for the Veterans Administration. She is survived by her daughter, Dr. Helen Ruth Tibbo of Chapel Hill, NC, and was much beloved. Edith “Allene” Walker
HILLSBOROUGH — Allene Walker was diagnosed on March 21, 2014 with advanced lung cancer. It was her wish to have hospice care at her daughter Susan’s home, where she had lived the last four years. She was surrounded by family at her passing.
She was predeceased by her parents, Edmond Hendricks Walker and Leola Doris White; her brothers, James, Cecil, and Clyde (infant); and son-in-law, Donald Duncan.
Surviving are daughters, Diane McGhee (Phillip) Walker and Susan McGhee Duncan, both of Hillsborough; sisters, Frances Walker and Doris Finley, both of Hillsborough; grandchildren, Brandy Duncan (Shawn) Garrard, Angie Duncan (Erik) Cook, Jennifer Walker (Timmy) McCormick; great-grandchildren, Samantha and Paige Garrard and Austin Cook; along with her pet dog “Tink” who gave her unconditional love and companionship.
Allene was of the Baptist faith and was a member of Mars Hill Baptist. She was a seamstress and ran a cleaning service where she had many special customers who became her friends.
A celebration of her life will be held Friday at 3 PM at Lawrence Road Baptist Church with visitation to greet the family in the fellowship hall afterwards. Archie Stanfield, Jr.
ROXBORO — Mr. Archie Stanfield, Jr., age 82, of Roxboro, North Carolina passed away on Monday, March 31st, at Duke Hospital in Durham, NC.
Archie Stanfield is survived by his daughters, Teresa Pettiford (husband Joseph) and Sandra Stanfield Drumgold. He is also survived by two grandsons, Joseph Michael Pettiford (wife Helen) of Raleigh, NC and Darrick Lee Pettiford of Greensboro, NC.
Archie Stanfield is also survived by three sisters, Nellie Ray Battle, Mary Bernice Wells (husband Henry) and Margaret Jackson, all of Roxboro, NC, in addition to a host of other relatives and friends.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 5th at Union Grove Baptist Church in Hurdle Mills, NC. A wake will be held at the church 1 hour prior to the funeral on Saturday from 11 AM until 12 noon. A viewing will be held on Friday, April 4th, from 1 PM until 8 PM at the Hester, Whitted and Daye Funeral Home in Roxboro, NC. At other times, the family will receive visitors at his home at 724 Houston Blalock Road in Roxboro.
