Josiah Cecil "JC" Cheek
DURHAM - On Sunday morning, November 24, 2013, a zealous and humble servant, Rev. Dr. Josiah Cecil "JC" Cheek, 79, was called to his heavenly reward by our Lord.
Dr. Cheek was born in Liberty, NC on September 12, 1934 to the late Rev. J.R. and Mrs. Queen Esther Bowden Cheek. He graduated from Graham High School in 1954 and one year later he married his high school sweetheart, the late Emma Marie Tate Cheek. To this union a daughter, Angela Kaye, and a son, James Cecil, were born.
Before becoming a full-time servant for close to 44 years at Mount Calvary UCC, he was employed with Burlington Industries, Piedmont Natural Gas Company and Frissell Fabrics for a number of years.
After he accepted God's call on his life to preach the gospel, in September 1968, Rev. Cheek enrolled in the Union Christian Bible Training Institute.
He was called to pastor Mount Calvary United Church of Christ in January 1970. In 1974 he received his Master of Divinity degree and in 1991 Rev. Cheek received an Honorary Doctorate of Ministry, both from the Union Christian Bible Training Institute.
After the death of his first wife in 1983 and more than 5 years of being a widower, in 1989, he was married to the former Priscilla A. Brown and together they were the parents of Angela, James and Deborah Brown; the grandparents of Antonio and Meiko Brown.
He was also preceded in death by his sister and brothers-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. KC and Katherine Foxx and Mr. Carl D. Torain.
Left with the delightful and precious memories of this great man are his loving wife and constant companion, Mrs. Priscilla Cheek of Graham, NC; two devoted daughters, Ms. Angela Cheek of Burlington, NC and Ms. Deborah Brown of Charlotte, NC; one caring son, Mr. James Cheek of Statesville, NC; two wonderful grandchildren, Mr. and Mrs. Tony and Meico Brown of Pleasant Garden, NC; two affectionate great-grandchildren, Kyndall and Kayson Brown; an attentive adopted daughter, Ms. Yolanda Watson of Durham, NC; four doting brothers and one sister-in-law, Mr. Edward Cheek of Greensboro, NC, Mr. James Cheek of Baltimore, MD, Rev. and Mrs. George and Katrina Cheek of Pleasant Garden, NC and Mr. Robert Moore Jr. of Graham, NC; two considerate sisters, Mrs. Ethelyne Headen of Liberty, NC and Mrs. Dora Moore Thompson of Greensboro, NC; two helpful sisters-in-law, Mrs. Minnie Margaret Nichols and Mrs. Velvet Torain both of Durham, NC; an adoring adopted sister, Ms. Joyce Bowling; a kind nephew and nieces, Rev. and Mrs. Rodney Elizabeth Foxx of Liberty, NC; Ms. Whitney Torain and Mrs. Deondra Torain, both of Greensboro, NC.
Funeral service will be held Saturday at noon at Mount Calvary UCC, 1715 Athens St., Durham, NC. Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to noon, with the family present from 11 a.m. to noon. Family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Children's Chapel UCC, 334 W. Harden St., Graham, NC.

Doris Brady Crabtree
DURHAM — Mrs. Doris Brady Crabtree, 85, died early Wednesday at Duke University Hospital. Mrs. Crabtree was born in Durham County, the daughter of the late Shafter B. Brady and the late Mary Ellen McDonald Brady. Prior to her retirement, she was employed by Duke University. Mrs. Crabtree was a member of Pleasant Green United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Horace Crabtree, and a daughter, Elizabeth Crabtree.
Mrs. Crabtree is survived by daughters, Terri Crabtree Godwin and husband, Kent, and Sheila Crabtree Witt and husband, Jeffrey; and grandchildren, Jason Godwin, Alex Witt, Will Witt and Sara Witt.
Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Saturday at Pleasant Green United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.

DURHAM - Norman Ira Margolis, age 64, died Thursday at his home. Graveside funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 1:00 pm at Judea Reform Congregation Cemetery, Rabbi Laura Lieber officiating. Malinda Pickard O’Brient
DURHAM - Mrs. Malinda Pickard O’Brient, age 91, died Wednesday at her home.
Graveside funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. at Maplewood Cemetery.
