Joe Louis Alston

DURHAM - Funeral services for Joe Louis Alston will be held Friday at 12 Noon at First Calvary Baptist Church, 1311 Morehead Avenue, with family visitation from 11 to 12 Noon.

Survivors include wife, Maxine Bouknight Alston; several daughters and sons including Joseph Bernard DeShawn Alston, Janice Rainey, Candice Alston; sisters, Gladys Alston Graves, Paulette Fogg Davis; brother, Wilmer White; grandchildren, great-grandchildren.

Public viewing 12 to 7 p.m. Thursday at Fisher Funeral Parlor.

Robert Brandon

DURHAM - Robert Brandon, 39, departed his life on November 3, 2013. He is survived by his mother Barbara Jean Brandon, father Robert Leon Talley, Sr. (deceased), a loving grandmother Madie Waters Brandon, one sister, four brothers, nine nieces and nephews, three aunts, three uncles, six cousins and a host of other relatives and friends.

Services will be at Holloway Memorial Funeral Home, Friday, November 15, 2013 at 11:00 a.m.

Visitation at 10:00 a.m.

Flora Mae Goss Carver

DURHAM - Mrs. Flora Mae Goss Carver, 91, of Durham, died on Tuesday, November 12, 2013. Mrs. Carver was a native of Durham, the daughter of the late Augustus Graham Goss and Lorena McGee Goss. She was a homemaker and loved playing bridge, golf, bowling and gardening. She was of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Thomas Goss, Bobby Goss, Mack Goss, Nick Goss, Augustus Goss Jr. and one sister, Edna Goss Mitchell.

She is survived by her husband, Marvin E. Carver; son, Ricky Carver (Tracey) of Bayboro NC; daughters, Jean Carver Kelley of Burlington and Joyce Slinger (Malcom) of Angier; one sister, Merita Goss Clegg of Durham; grandchildren, Carol Jarman, Bryan Carver, Eric Carver and Barry Renwick; two great-grandchildren, Zachory and Mackenzie Higgins.

Funeral services will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. in the Few Chapel at Croasdaile Village, 2600 Croasdaile Farm Parkway. Chaplain Laurie Hays Coffman and Denise Waters will officiate.

Interment will be in the Lowes Grove Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Barry Renwick, Bryan Carver, Eric Carver, Mike Goss, Ernie Batchelor and Robert Dale Moore.

The family will receive friends on Friday from 1 to 2 p.m., before the service at Few Chapel. Flowers are acceptable or donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Eastern North Carolina, 3739 National Drive, Suite 110, Raleigh, NC 27612.

Freddie Louis Ferrell

DURHAM — Funeral service for Mr. Freddie Louis Ferrell (66) of Durham, NC. will be conducted on Friday at 1:00 p.m. from the City of Joy Church. The family will meet with their friends one hour before the funeral service.

Survivors are his two daughters, Teresa Dickey, Deborah Crews; three sons, Fredrick Ferrell, Freddie Ferrell Jr., Quinton Ferrell; six sisters, Deborah Hemingway, Stacy Ferrell, Terrie Jones, Beverly Ferrell, Tammy Ferrell, Toni Reams; five brothers, Thomas Ferrell, David Ferrell, Ricky Ferrell, Mark Ferrell, Wayne Ferrell; nine grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

Dominic Joseph Marino

DURHAM — Dominic Joseph Marino, 95, of the Croasdaile Community died Monday, November 11, 2013 at Duke University Hospital. Dominic was a native of Atchison, KS. Born on April 21, 1918 to the late Pete Marino and Josephine Modica-Amore.

He was preceded in death by his sisters, Cecilia Marino, Carmela Marino, Mary Frances Sparks and his brother, Samuel Marino.

Dominic is survived by his wife of 69 years, Vivian Marino, his daughters, Josephine Ann Goeckner of Reno, NV; Nina Hornberger of Silver Springs, NV; his son, Peter Marino and wife, Christine of Durham; his 10 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10:00 AM Saturday, November 16, 2013 from St. Matthew Catholic Church with Fr. Thanh Nguyen, presiding.

Friends may visit from 9:00 – 10:00 am Saturday prior to Mass at St. Mathew Catholic Church.

Anthony “Andy” Charles Morris

DURHAM — Mr. Anthony “Andy” Charles Morris, 49, a former resident of Durham, died in Kokomo, Indiana on Sunday, November 10, 2013.

Andy was born in Wake County and spent most of his life in the Durham area. He was a graduate of Southern High School. He was a former member of Bethesda Baptist Church. He was employed with the Dollar Tree. He is preceded in death by his father, Elliott “A.C.” Morris.

He is survived by his mother, Carolyn Morris; two sisters, Lisa Vaughan (Kevin) of Virginia and Sheila Ann Morris of Durham; one niece; Emily Ann Morris; two nephews, Zachary Vaughan, Matthew Vaughan and a large extended family.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Hudson Funeral Chapel. Rev. R. W. Hudgins will officiate.

The family will receive friends on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home and other times at the home, 2811 Cascadilla Street. The family request only table flower arrangements.

Mary Frances Taylor Patterson

DURHAM -- Mary Frances Taylor Patterson, 85, daughter of the late Levy and Mary Taylor, departed her life on November 12, 2013. Frances was united in marriage to the late George W. Patterson, Jr. She leaves to cherish her memory: three sisters, Emma Taylor, Doris Pierce, Shirley Walker and one brother Levy (L.C.) Taylor.

Funeral Service will be at 2:30 pm on Friday at Union Baptist Church with visitation from 1:30-2:30.

Betty Hayes Sharpe

HILLSBOROUGH -– Betty Hayes Sharpe died October 20, 2013. She was born December 14, 1925 in Asheboro, NC to Moody T. and Glada Yow Hayes. She retired from the Orange County Tax Supervisor’s Office in Hillsborough.

She is survived by a daughter, Ellen Sharpe Diana and husband Phil of Lakeland, FL; and son Hayes Sharpe and wife Marian of Matthews, NC; brother-in-law Malcom C. Parnell and sister-in-law Grace Sharpe Parnell of Raleigh, NC; one niece and four nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 45 years, C. Wayland Sharpe; her sister, Mary Ellen Pickard and brother-in-law Morris Glenn Pickard.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, November 16th at 11 a.m. at the Hillsborough Town Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hillsborough United Methodist Church.


Sally Ann Schumacher

PINEHURST -- Dr. Sally Ann Schumacher, 78, of Pinehurst died Thursday, November 7, 2013 at home.

She was attended by Comfort Keepers and soon joined by her brother and his wife.

She was born July 23, 1935 in Washington, D.C. to the late Dr. Francis X. and Muriel Schumacher. Sally received her doctorate at Washington University, Saint Louis, taught at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond and retired as a Professor Emeritus in 2002. She co-authored a best-selling college textbook on Research Methods which has been through 5 editions.

She is survived by her brother, Donald F. X., and his wife, Marcia Black Schumacher of Seven Lakes North.

Sally requested that no funeral should take place and that her ashes be scattered.

Claude Samuel “Tic” Suitt

LYNCHBURG, VA. – Claude Samuel “Tic” Suitt entered into eternal rest on Sunday, November 10, 2013. He was born to the late Claude and Beatrice Suitt.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday, November 15, 2013, at New Vine Baptist Church, Lynchburg, Va.

Claude is survived by his wife, Sophia H. Suitt; sisters, Virgiline S. Fuller of Essex, Md., and Rebecca Suitt Gray (Harry), niece and nephew, Anita Satterfield Torian and Anthony Satterfield all of Durham, and the late Steve Satterfield.
