Billy Sherwood Norton, Sr.
DURHAM — Mr. Billy Sherwood Norton, Sr., 77, of Durham, died on Thursday, August 28, 2014.
Mr. Norton was born in Johnston County to the late Aaron and Mabel Strickland Norton. He attended Faith Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Winnie Norton; three sons, Billy S. Norton, Jr. and wife, Rhonda of Oxford, Barry W. Norton and wife, Kim and Brent L. Norton and wife, Mitsi, all of Durham; one sister, Shirley Ferrell of Durham; six grandchildren, Valerie Norton, Chloe Norton, Winston Norton, Brice Norton, Nick Norton and Austin Norton.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Faith Baptist Church. Rev. Shane Smith and Rev. Roger Wall will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends on Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Home. Flowers are acceptable or donations can be made to Faith Baptist Church, 3321 Cheek Road, Durham, NC 27704.

Carolyn Denise (Niecy) Payne
DURHAM — Carolyn Denise (Niecy) Payne, 61, passed on Monday, August 25, 2014.
Carolyn was formerly a resident of Atlanta, GA, residing in Durham, NC for the past 9 years.
She is survived by two sisters and one brother of Atlanta, GA; fiancé, Richard Clinton of Durham, NC; and a host of nieces and nephews, all of Atlanta, GA.
Services will be held on Saturday, August 30, 2014 at Mt. Calvary United Church of Christ, 1715 Athens Drive, beginning at 1:00 p.m., officiated by Dr. Cheryl McNair.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 29, 2014 from 6;00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Mt. Calvary United Church of Christ.

Rev. Thomasine Howze Smith
DURHAM — Reverend Thomasine Howze Smith, age 69, passed on Sunday, August 24, 2014. She was born in Durham County to the late Thomas Lett and the late Hettie Jane Howze.
Reverend Smith is survived by her daughter, Winifred R. Smith (Anthony); brother, Andre Howze; sisters, Palestine Howze, Belinda Howze, Jennie Jones, Hettie Harrington and special sister, Pastor Rachel H. Green.
Services will take place on Saturday, August 30, 2014 at Russell Memorial C.M.E. Church, 703 S. Alston Ave., Durham, NC 27701, beginning at 2:00 p.m. Family will meet friends one hour prior to the service.

Sandra Varner Holliman
MEBANE — Mrs. Sandra Varner Holliman, age 52, of Burlington passed away on Wednesday, August 27, 2014 at the Hospice Home after a three-year battle with cancer. She was a special wife, sister and aunt and loved her family dearly.
Born in Forsyth County, she was the daughter of the late Wilbur Ray Varner and the late Nancy Clark Varner and was married for over 32 years to William Charles Holliman, who survives. She achieved a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from UNC-G and was a certified financial planner through the College of Financial Planning. She was formerly employed as a finance director with Duke University and later employed with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Sandra was a former member of Friedens Lutheran Church and was attending Integrity Church. She was a lifetime member and volunteer with the North Carolina Zoo and was a strong lover of animals, especially her pets.
Mrs. Holliman is survived by her husband of the home; a sister, Sybil (Pat) Goodson of Burlington; a brother, Brent (Mary) Varner of Jackson, TN; a nephew, Brice Holliman; a great-niece and -nephew, Taylor Holliman and Brice Holliman, Jr.; and a special friend, Cindy Ramey. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Deborah Varner.
The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 PM, Saturday, August 30, 2014 at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Ray Crompton. Interment will follow at Alamance Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6-8 PM Friday evening at the funeral home and other times at the residence.

Charanne Carroll Clarke
CHAPEL HILL — Charanne Carroll Clarke left this world peacefully on August 25, 2014, in Durham, NC, after a lengthy illness. Born May 15, 1936 in Chicago, IL, Charanne was a lover of music, a pianist and sometimes cellist, a writer of fiction, scholarly pieces, and screen plays. She enjoyed photography, was an enthusiast of Ikebana, and she made a mean borscht. Charanne earned her PhD in comparative literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, but was most proud of her sons, Will (Lesa) Kurylo of Durham, NC, and Gene Clarke of Paris, France.
Her 99 year-old mother, Anne Carroll of Traverse City, MI, survives her, as do her two sisters, Fleur (David) Wright of Santa Fe, NM, and Cynthia (Gordon) Ciaravino of Rapid City, MI. Additional survivors include Aunts Virginia and Gladys and Uncle David, nieces Angelina (Dan) Mayer and Antonia Ciaravino, great-nephews Joey and Jonathan Mayer, and special friend Di Di Westgate of Paris, France.
The family wishes to thank Carolina House and Transitions LifeCare and their excellent staffs for the personal care and attention they gave Charanne in the final months of her life.

Ray Winfred Daye
PROSPECT HILL — Ray Winfred Daye, age 44, passed away on August 23, 2014. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Saturday, August 30, 2014 at Warren’s Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, 14769 NC 86 South, Prospect Hill, NC with Rev. Robbie Bynum officiating. Interment will follow in the Warren’s Chapel Missionary Baptist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends at 12 noon, one hour prior to the service. Visitation will also be held from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Hester Whitted and Daye Funeral Chapel in Hillsborough, NC.
Ray was born on November 14, 1969, in Chapel Hill, NC to the late Deacon Eddie Sylvene Daye and Odessa Torain Daye, who survives. He attended Orange County Public Schools, graduating in 1988 from Orange High School. He married Revonda Michelle Hurdle on September 6, 2003.
Ray enlisted in the United States Navy shortly after graduation and was based at the Mayport Naval Base in Jacksonville, FL. He served his country from 1989 to 1993 on the naval ship USS Doyle (FFG 39) and upon being honorably discharged, he returned to North Carolina to be with his family and friends.
Ray was employed in Hillsborough, NC as a Store Manager at Vietri, Inc. for 14 years where he gained respect from his co-workers and they all worked together as a family unit. He loved his job and the Vietri family, and it was evident that they felt the same towards him.
Ray was preceded in death by his grandparents, Allen and Maude Daye and Robert and Hallie Torain; father, Eddie Sylvene Daye; brother, Edward B. Daye; daughter, Nia Rae Daye. He leaves to cherish his memories forever, his wife, Revonda Michelle Daye of the home; son, Joshua Hughes of Danville, VA; daughter, Rayla Johnson-Daye of Hyde Park, MA; mother, Odessa L. Daye; sister, Anita M. Daye, both of Hillsborough, NC; mother-in-law, Lessie M. Hurdle of Burlington, NC; brothers-in-law, Anthony Hurdle (Angela) of Graham, NC and Curtis Tinnin of Stamford, CT; sister-in-law, Yvette Slade (Don); very special nieces, Antana Hurdle of Graham, NC, Candice Daye of Newport News, VA and Aliyah Holt of Chapel Hill, NC; aunts, Catherine Cotton, Katherine Johnson and Annie B. Southern; uncles, Dr. Linwood T. Daye and Lucious Daye; and a host of family members and friends.
