Haywood Jabbar Downey
DURHAM — Haywood Jabbar Downey, 34, departed his life on August 23, 2014.
He leaves to cherish his memory his mother and father, Jannette and David Harris, Sr., eight children, four sisters, one brother, nine aunts, seven uncles, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Funeral services will be at 1:00 pm on Saturday at Union Baptist Church, Durham, with visitation at 12 noon.

Roger Wade Fara
DURHAM — Roger Wade Fara, 54, passed away Wednesday, August 27, 2014 at Hock Family Pavilion. He was born in Westpoint, NY, son of Larry Aldo Fara and Julia Helon Shepherd Fara.
In addition to his parents, he is survived by his brothers, Steven Ray Fara (Ruth), Marty Jay Fara (Kim); nieces and nephews, Victoria, Constance, Sophia, Chad, and Joseph.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Saturday, at First Pentecostal Church with Pastor Johnny Godair officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 1 to 2 p.m. at the church.
Flowers are acceptable or memorial donations may be made to First Pentecostal Church, 2008 W. Carver St., Durham, NC 27705.

Rachel Ryan
DURHAM — Funeral services for Rachel Ryan will be held Saturday, August 30, at 12 noon at First Congregational United Church of Christ located at 2221 Oakridge Boulevard. The family visitation will be held one hour prior to service.
Survivors include a daughter, Tania Ryan Stokes (Maurice Sr.); 4 grandsons, Maurice Stokes Jr., Ryan L. Stokes, Eric E. Stokes, Ezekiel T. Stokes; 4 sisters, 1 brother; and host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

ORANGE

Charanne Carroll Clarke
CHAPEL HILL — Charanne Carroll Clarke left this world peacefully on August 25, 2014, in Durham, NC, after a lengthy illness. Born May 15, 1936 in Chicago, IL, Charanne was a lover of music, a pianist and sometimes cellist, a writer of fiction, scholarly pieces, and screen plays. She enjoyed photography, was an enthusiast of Ikebana, and she made a mean borscht. Charanne earned her PhD in comparative literature from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, but was most proud of her sons, Will (Lesa) Kurylo of Durham, NC, and Gene Clarke of Paris, France.
Her 99 year-old mother, Anne Carroll of Traverse City, MI, survives her, as do her two sisters, Fleur (David) Wright of Santa Fe, NM, and Cynthia (Gordon) Ciaravino of Rapid City, MI. Additional survivors include Aunts Virginia and Gladys and Uncle David, nieces Angelina (Dan) Mayer and Antonia Ciaravino, great-nephews Joey and Jonathan Mayer, and special friend Di Di Westgate of Paris, France.
The family wishes to thank Carolina House and Transitions LifeCare and their excellent staffs for the personal care and attention they gave Charanne in the final months of her life.

Virginia B. Hardee
HILLSBOROUGH — Virginia B. Hardee died at her home in Hillsborough, NC on August 23, 2014 from complications of Parkinson’s disease.
She was born November 16, 1930 in Ithaca, NY. She was the daughter of Nell C. and Richard D. Baker. She was preceded in death by her two siblings, Clyde H. Baker and Jeanette Hine of Newfield, NY.
Virginia moved to Chapel Hill, NC in 1949 with her brother who was attending UNC on the GI Bill. While in Chapel Hill, she met, fell in love with and married Bob Hardee. They were married 61 years until his death in 2012. She had a career as a bookkeeper in Carrboro, Chapel Hill and Hillsborough.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, Hillsborough, where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir. Many remember her for her smile.
Memorial services will be held at FBC, Hillsborough, NC on Saturday August 30, 2014 at 11:00 am. Visitation will follow the service.
Virginia is survived by her three children, Rick Synder Hardee of Chapel Hill, Wanda Hardee Kidd of Cullowhee, NC and Amy Hardee of Hillsborough; her son-in-law Dan Kidd; and her two grandchildren, Bethany Kidd Merrell of Roswell, GA and Stanton Kidd of Nashville, TN. Her in-laws, Jake and LaRue Hardee, Josie H. Thomas, Billie Hardee and Wilma Hardee, as well as many nieces and nephews, also survive her, as does her dear friend, Jane S. Byrd.

Mary Jane Schreiber
CHAPEL HILL — Mary Jane Schreiber of Chapel Hill passed away at Duke Medical Center on August 23.
She was the daughter of Arthur and Lorena Moorhead and grew up in Indiana and western North Carolina.
Jane attended Valley Springs High School in Skyland, NC and Blanton’s Business College in Asheville, NC. She worked for several years in the business departments of radio stations in Hendersonville, NC and Durham, NC.
Jane met her husband, Jim Schreiber, at Valley Springs High School, and they were married in 1958 when he was a rising senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. They remained residents of Chapel Hill for the remainder of her life.
Jane and Jim became members of the University Presbyterian Church, Chapel Hill in 1966. She was a constant, active member, and it was her joy and passion to serve in numerous functions of the church life.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years, their 3 children Wendy Schreiber Rose (Byron) of Great Falls, Virginia, Leslie Schreiber Hicks (Tom) of Chapel Hill, Eric G. Schreiber of Richmond, Virginia, and Champ the collie. There are four grandchildren: Caitlin and Justin Rose, Jackson and Nicholas Schreiber. She is also survived by a brother, Arthur Moorhead of Knoxville, Tennessee, and a nephew and niece, Michael Moorhead and Suzanne Moorhead Koontz.
The family express profound appreciation for the superb care given Jane by the UNC Hospitals and Duke ICU unit. Nurse Care of North Carolina has our respect and thanks. We have much appreciation for the outstanding providers at Hillcrest Convalescent Center.
Grateful appreciation is extended to two wonderful, talented caregivers, Larry Lee and Diana Yancey. These two caring people contributed remarkably toward bettering the quality of life she had in the past months.
A memorial service will be held on September 20 at the University Presbyterian Church at 11:00 am. The family will receive guests in the fellowship hall following the service.

Mary Elizabeth "Pete" Long Barnette
ROXBORO — Mary Elizabeth "Pete" Long Barnette, age 87, of 392 Barnette-Tingen Road, died Wednesday, August 27, 2014 at her home with her family at her side. She was the daughter of the late Linzie Robert Long and Freddie Dunn Long. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one brother, Bobby Long; four sisters, Hilda Green, Callie Ray Bowman, Joyce Melton, and Sylvia Blalock; two grandchildren, Travis Barnette and Amanda Jordan. Mrs. Barnette was a homemaker, farmer, and gardener. She also worked for Roxboro Manufacturing. She also loved to take care of her children and grandchildren. She graduated from Roxboro High and is a member of Providence Baptist Church.
Mrs. Barnette is survived by her husband of over 65 years, Paul Barnette of the home; two sons, Michael Barnette and Keith Barnette & wife Mary P., all of Roxboro; two sisters, Peggy Davis of Roxboro and Linda Miller & husband Bill of Hurdle Mills; four grandchildren, Whitney Sharlow & husband Mark, Brandy Barnette, Devin Barnette, and Ashley Irby & husband Joseph; three great-grandchildren, Abby Grace Sharlow, Ryan Sharlow, and Virginia Sharlow.
The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 PM, Thursday, August 28, 2014 at Providence Baptist Church and other times at the home.
Funeral Service will be held 11:00 AM, Friday, August 29, 2014, at Providence Baptist Church by the Rev. Dennis McDonald. Interment will follow in Person Memorial Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Howard Smith, Fred Fox, Jr., Mark Sharlow, Joseph Irby, Keith Burnette, and Kenneth Long.
