DURHAM
Rhonda Hope Cheek Carroll
DURHAM — Mrs. Rhonda Hope Cheek Carroll, 59, of 8228 Wake Forest Hwy, died on Tuesday, July 2, 2013.
Mrs. Carroll was a native of Granville County and lifelong resident of Durham. She was preceded in death by her mother, Hyacinth Williams Wiley; and two brothers, Jimmy and Ray Cheek.
She is survived by her husband, Clarence “Smokey” Carroll; her father, Robert Wiley Sr.; son, Shane Cheek (Christie); two brothers, Tony Cheek, Robert Wiley Jr.; sister, Sandra Scott; and grandchild and Nana’s #1 baseball player, Holden Cheek.
Graveside services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at the Creedmoor Town Cemetery. Rev. Tim McCreight will officiate.
The family will receive friends on Friday at the cemetery following the service and other times at the home of Shane and Christie Cheek, 603 24th Street in Butner. Flowers are acceptable. Online condolences can be made at www.hudsonfuneralhome.com.


Joyce R. Childress
DURHAM — Mrs. Joyce R. Childress, 70, passed away Sunday, June 30, 2013 at Hock Family Pavilion. She was born in Bland Co., VA to the late Lenora Miller Jarrell and Claude Ramsey. Mrs. Childress worked as a secretary for the City of Durham Water Resources.
Mrs. Childress is survived by her spouse, William “Bud” Childress; son, William “Billy” Childress Jr. (Tina) of Knightdale; grandchildren, Grant, Jordan, Cailey and Kasey Childress; sisters, Claudine Vickers of FL, Bethel Brodie of FL, Peggy Holt of VA; half-brother, Charles Jarrell of VA.
A funeral service will be held Saturday July 6, at 11 a.m. at Clements Funeral Chapel in Durham. Burial will follow at Markham Memorial Gardens in Chapel Hill. Family will receive friends at Clements Funeral Home in Durham Friday July 5, from 6 to 8 p.m.

Takoreio Jackson
DURHAM - Takoreio Jackson, 19, departed this life on June 27, 2013. His memory will be cherished by his mother, Spandora Jackson; his father, Christopher Smith Sr; six sisters, four brothers, one nephew, aunts, uncles and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held Friday, July 5, 2013 at Holloway Memorial Funeral Home at 1 p.m. with visitation at 12 noon.


Billie Lee Thorpe
DURHAM — Mr. Billie Lee Thorpe, 71, passed away on Friday, June 28, 2013 at the Durham VA Medical Center. He was born in Durham to the late Eural and Bessie Thorpe on December 4, 1941. He was a life-long resident of Durham and a graduate of Hillside High School and NCCU. He is a Vietnam veteran and served in the Navy from 1962-71. Billie worked in the Clinical Support Labs and Administration at Duke Hospital for 32 years until he retired in 2003. He was married to the late Maxine Bledsoe Thorpe for 38 years and is survived by 2 children: Valerie Thorpe Gill (Ralph Larry) and Timothy B. Thorpe (April); 3 grandchildren (Torey & Kiara Thorpe, Larry Gill); 2 siblings (Clarice E. Thorpe of Durham & Charles Thorpe of Sacramento, CA); and a host of relatives and friends.
The Wake will be held Friday, July 5th from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and the Funeral Services will be held Sat. July 6th at 12 Noon.  Both services will be held at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church, 404 Dowd St, Durham.
Viewing will take place on Friday from 9:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. at Scarborough & Hargett Chapel. 
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Mt. Gilead Baptist Church Scholarship Fund (c/o Billie Thorpe).

Ya'nesha Mo'nay Williams
DURHAM - Ya'nesha Mo'nay Williams, 21, entered into eternal rest on June 29, 2013. She is survived by her mother, Devona Hines; and father, Elisha Williams; one sister, three brothers, one maternal and one paternal grandmother, one great-grandmother, two aunts, two uncles, 13 cousins and four special friends and a loving special friend and mentor Charles Moody. 
Funeral services will be Saturday, July 6, 2013 at Holloway Memorial Funeral Home, at 1 p.m. with visitation at noon.

Tevera Gilbert Davis
CREEDMOOR — Tevera Gilbert Davis, 51, a longtime resident of Granville County, passed away Wednesday, July 3rd, 2013 at her home.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 6th, 2013 in the Eakes Funeral Chapel in Creedmoor, NC by the Rev. Thomas Lamm. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery in Charlottesville, Virginia on Sunday, July 7th, 2013 at 2 p.m.
Visitation will be held Saturday July 6th, 2013 from 11:30 to 1 p.m. prior to the funeral service at the Eakes Funeral Home in Creedmoor.

Mollie Elizabeth Ellis Davis
CHAPEL HILL — Mollie Elizabeth Ellis Davis died July 2, 2013, surrounded by family, at her residence - The Stratford House of Chapel Hill, NC.
Born January 13, 1925, in Wilson County, NC, Mollie lived most of her life in NC and Virginia. She attended Business Secretarial School after graduating in 1941 from Edgecombe County High School on the grounds of the current South Edgecombe Junior High School in Pinetops, NC. 
In addition to raising her two daughters, she held many administrative jobs and retired in the spring of 1987 as Tax Collector for the City of Havelock, NC to become a full time “Gran”. While actively involved in her church (Norfolk, VA, Piney Green, NC, and Havelock, NC) and her daughters’ schools, Mollie influenced more than one generation of young people who often called her “Mom” and then in later years, “Gran.” Mollie definitely was a woman who loved people and loved to laugh and she taught those around her how to as well.
Surviving is her brother, Hubert Devon Ellis of Pinetops, NC; her daughters and their spouses including Deborah Davis-Noell and her husband, Doug Noell, of Chapel Hill, NC; Darlene Davis Deaton and her husband, David Deaton, of Woodbridge, VA. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Scott Ellis Noell, Wilmington, NC, Katrina Elizabeth Noell, Chapel Hill, NC, Constance Celeste Deaton, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Caitlyn Ellis Deaton, Ferrum, VA; one great grandchild and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Ida Pearl Webb Ellis and Noah Ellis; her sisters, Rosa Pearl Ellis Edwards, Mary Louise Ellis Boseman, Virginia Estelle Ellis, Doris Marie Ellis Dowdy; and her brothers, Paul Dee Ellis and Chester Mitchell Ellis.
Services will be Friday, July 5th at 11:30 a.m. at Walker’s Funeral Home, 120 W. Franklin St, Chapel Hill, NC, with the Reverend Doctor Dennis Hill, officiating. Visitation will be at 10:30 a.m. A graveside service will be held at 4:30 p.m. at the Pinetops City Cemetery, Pinetops, NC.

CHAPEL HILL — Robert Lee Fowler Jr., 77, passed away at his residence on Wednesday, July 3rd, 2013.

George Harlan Lloyd
HILLSBOROUGH — George Harlan Lloyd, born November 3rd, 1930, entered eternal rest at White Oak Manor Nursing Home of Burlington, NC, on Saturday June 22nd, 2013. Mr. Lloyd was a lifetime resident of Hillsborough, NC. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Brandon Lloyd and Ruby Antoinette Oakley Lloyd; and one sister, Nellie Ruth Haithcock. George is survived by one brother, David Lloyd (Carolyn) of Greensboro; four sisters, Annette Adams of Southern Pines, Jeanne Frederick (Frank) of Hillsborough, Mary Alice Robinson (Clifton) of Hillsborough, and Edna Liner of Liberty, NC; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends.
George graduated from Hillsborough High School in 1949. He then spent four years serving in the U.S. Navy, after which, he attended UNC-Chapel Hill.
George was an avid reader, and he loved nature, music, and history. He especially enjoyed taking drives in the country, long walks on beautiful days, and spending time with friends and family.
Having a desire to benefit mankind, he donated his body to medical research.
A celebration of life memorial service will be conducted at a later date.
A special thank you is wished to the wonderful, caring staff of White Oak Manor, who cared for him with love and kindness.

Larry Douglas White
SOUTHERN PINES, NC — Larry Douglas White passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 2, 2013.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Hicks White; his mother, Opal White Brinkley; his sister, Gaynelle Finch; and two nephews, FO Finch III and Jason Finch (wife Julie); a grand-nephew, Brooks Owen Finch; a grand-niece, Sarah Opal Finch; and a beloved pet, Prince.
Larry was born May 21, 1940. He was preceded in death by his father, Douglas White. He graduated from Oxford High School in Oxford and attended Mars Hill College in Mars Hill. He served in the U.S. Air Force from February 1960 until February 1964. After his discharge from the Air Force, he held the position of Clinical Lab Director at Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst until his retirement in 2002 after 32 years of service.
He was in the local Jaycees and served as secretary of the N.C. Jaycees and as president of the Cystic Fibrosis Chapter for two years. He received the Order of the Long Leaf Pine from the late Gov. James Holshouser Jr.
After 30 years of marriage, his first wife Julianna Yancey White, died in 1992. In 1993, he married Joyce Hicks White. He and Joyce enjoyed several years of travelling and memorable times with family and friends.
A celebration of Larry’s life will be held on Monday, July 8, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Brownson Memorial Presbyterian Church in Southern Pines, NC. Following the service, the family will greet friends at a reception in the Fellowship Hall. Interment will follow at Bethesda Cemetery.
