Sarah Elma Braxton
DURHAM - Funeral services for Sarah Elma Braxton will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church, 2508 Crest St., Durham 27705. Visitation at the church at 1 p.m. on Friday.
Survivors: daughters, Gladys B. Wortham (Wally) and Emma B. Riley-Farrington (Howard); brothers, Archie Tilley and Arthur Tilley; sister, Alberta Wade; 11 grandchildren; six great grandchildren.
DURHAM - Ms. Celestine Stanfield, 77, of 801 Massey Ave., died Saturday, February 9, 2013 at Carver Living Center. Her service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Thursday, February 14, 2013 at Burthey Funeral Chapel, 1510 Fayetteville St. Interment will follow in Glennview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12-1 p.m. on Thursday at the chapel one hour prior to the service.
Ms. Stanfield is survived by three brothers, McCoy Stanfield, Algene Stanfield and Melvin Stanfield.

Dr. Paul Gene Strassler
DURHAM — Dr. Paul Gene Strassler died in Durham December 30, 2012, at the age of 87.
Gene, as he was known, was born November 30, 1925 in Indiana, PA, to Paul and Elsie (Townsend) Strassler. He was Chair of the NCCU Music Department (1966-85), Emeritus. Gene earned among others, undergraduate and graduate degrees from Juilliard and Columbia University, New York City, and the Ph.D. from UNC Chapel Hill.
Gene was active within the NC cultural and music field beginning in the 1950s as choir director, Community Church of Chapel Hill, and in the 1960s as choir director, St. Titus Episcopal Church, Durham; and by directing and performing in musicals and operas at UNC, ECU, and NCCU. Gene was inducted into the Order of the Golden Fleece honorary society at UNC in recognition of contributions to musical and theatrical productions, April 11, 1960. Strassler's voice was featured in UNC opera productions, most notably as Alfredo in Verdi's La Traviata opposite the Metropolitan soprano Phyllis Curtin, 1961.
He enjoyed volunteering at the Nearly New, where he served for many years, and developed many friendships.
Gene is remembered by close friends and care givers: Dennis Jones of MD/NC, Pat and Ray Moulton and Family, Cecil (Provost Emeritus, NCCU) and Vivian Patterson, and Norman Pendergraft among a host of other friends.
His friends from St. Titus Episcopal Church have been most supportive during his years of declining health and in their preparations for the celebration of his life to be held at the church. The Rev. Dr. Stuart Hoke will be the officiant at St. Titus Episcopal Church, 400 Moline St., Durham, Saturday, February 16, 2013, at 2 p.m. St. Titus Episcopal Church will sponsor a fellowship hour at the church after the service.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Titus Episcopal Church or NCCU.
Interment will be private.
Georgia Scarborough Watkins
DURHAM — Georgia Scarborough Watkins, born November 22, 1950, in Lee County, SC. Her life's journey ended February 7, 2013 at Duke University Medical Center.
She leaves to cherish and honor her memory, her son, David S. Watkins of Durham; her daughter, Kim Watkins Suitt of Knightdale; one granddaughter; two great-granddaughters; one sister; and a host of family and friends.
A memorial service will be held today at 1 p.m. at Lincoln Memorial Baptist Church.

Jason Lydell Hargrove
CHAPEL HILL — Jason Lydell Hargrove, born April 10, 1987, departed this life on February 10, 2013. He is survived by his parents, Alphonso Hargrove and Karen Ingram Pettiford; one sister, four half sisters, one half brother, and a host of other family members and friends. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 14, 2013, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Chapel Hill. Visitation will be held from 1 to 2 p.m.
