Hazel Janet Blackwood

DURHAM — Mrs. Hazel Janet Blackwood, 89, a former resident of Durham, died in Dickson, Tenn. on Saturday, February 2, 2013.
Mrs. Blackwood was born in Durham, the daughter of the late James Newton Street and Lillian Mae Blalock Street. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Blackwood.
She is survived by her two brothers, Rev. Tommy Street and Bruce Street; one sister, Trenis Bennett; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Lowes Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, officiated by the Rev. Hugh O’Shields. Online condolences can be made at www.hudsonfuneralhome.com.


Dorothy M. Godbee
DURHAM — Dorothy M. Godbee departed this life on January 30, 2013. She is survived by four children; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; one sister; and a host of nieces, nephews and other family members and friends.
Funeral services will be held at Mt. Level Missionary Baptist Church on Thursday, February 7, 2013 at 1 p.m. The family will receive friends an hour before the service.

Danal Lee Hunt
DURHAM — Danal Lee Hunt, age 76, died Sunday, February 3, 2013 in his Durham home surrounded by his loving family. A Durham native, he was born to the late Wilmer L. Hunt Sr. and Nellie Long Hunt on November 15, 1936. Dan was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy and a member of Angier Ave. Baptist Church. He worked as a field engineer for IBM where he retired in 1993 and later worked for Security Electric for eight years.
Dan is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 39 years, Donna Martin Hunt of Durham; his five children, Connie Hunt Reeves and husband, Harrell, of Timberlake; Linda C. Hunt of Franklin, NC; William L. Hunt Sr. and wife, Michelle, of Timberlake; Amy E. Hunt of Franklin, Tenn.; and Beth M. Hunt of Durham; his brother, W.L. Hunt Jr. and wife, Myrtle, of Hillsborough; his sisters, Geraldine Bumpass and husband, Jesse, of Durham; and Peggy Hunt Tilley of Goldsboro; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and his special and devoted friends, Chris Richardson, Jordan Griffin and Leah Harrington.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, February 7, from the Chapel of Hall-Wynne Funeral Service with the Reverend Hugh O’Shields presiding. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
Friends may visit Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service in Durham.

Owen Melvin Jr. 
DURHAM - Mr. Owen Melvin Jr., 78, of 128 Wicklow Lane, died Friday, February 1, 2013, at Hock Family Pavilion. His service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Thursday, February 7, 2013 at Smith Chapel AME Zion Church, 7485 Old Mintz Hwy, Garland.  Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, February 6, 2013 at Burthey Funeral Chapel, 1510 Fayetteville St.
Mr. Melvin is survived by his wife, Naomi H. Melvin; three children, Calvin Roberts, Lisa Melvin and Sarina McDonald; and three grandchildren, Joshua Neal, Christopher Roberts and Tiffany Wilson.

Hazel Rich Newton
DURHAM — Mrs. Hazel Rich Newton, 90, of Durham, died on Sunday, February 3, 2013.
Mrs. Newton was born in Wake County to the late Tommie and Sarah Hopson Rich. She retired from Blue Cross Blue Shield of NC. She was a very active member of Calvary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Guy Phillips and Linwood Newton; and her brothers, Clifton, Alton, Jessie Claborn, and Archie Rich; and three sisters, Ollie, Polly and Pearl Rich.
She is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Chapel, officiated by Dr. Gerald Goodwin. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 1 to 2 p.m., before the service at the funeral home. Interment will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park. Dexter Michael Turner
11/04/1963 – 02/03/2013

HURDLE MILLS — Mike was born to Charlie Dexter Turner and Betty Jean Rigsbee. He graduated from Orange High School in 1981 and from UNC Wilmington in 1986. He was a scout in the Oconeechee council and was the second scout in the history of the council to receive his Eagle Scout Badge at the age of 13.
He was employed by and enjoyed working for First Security Service for the past 20 years. He was well respected by his co-workers and customers.
He was very handy and talented at work and home. He completed many home renovations to include a just finished back deck and woodshop. He loved to work outside in the yard and kept several flower gardens blooming. He also enjoyed a rousing card game.
Mike was vivacious with an outgoing personality. He had a tenacious love of life and a wicked sense of humor, which served him well in his courageous battle with cancer.
A celebration of his life will be held for family and friends at 2 p.m on Wednesday, February 6th, 2012 at Duke Chapel on Old Oxford Hwy. in Durham.
Mike was much loved and will be sorely missed by many.
He is survived by his Wife, Cathy Rhew Turner; his parents; his sister, Debbie and her husband, John; and two daughters, Brittany Turner of Selma and Arden Bullard of Santa Barbara, Calif. He also leaves to cherish his memory his step-mother, Jo Turner; step-siblings, Peggy Salazar, Susan Castiglia, and Buddy Helms; and many close cousins, friends, and customers.
