Leo A. Davis

DURHAM — Funeral services for Leo A. Davis, 92, will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. at White Rock Baptist Church. Family visitation one hour before service.
Education: 1939 graduate of Hillside High School; West Virginia State College; North Carolina Central University.
Employment: School system of Troy, Alabama; State of New York Public Schools; Durham City Schools.
Member of White Rock Baptist Church - Choir and Sunday school teacher. U.S. Army Veteran.
Survivors: three daughters, Margo Davis Harper, Rosada Davis-Layne, Marilyn Davis Long (Andre); eight grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; three nephews; sisters-in-law, Gloria Johnson, Theresa Johnson Daye (Paul).
Public viewing today 12 to 7 p.m. at Fisher Funeral Parlor.


Mary Judson Straughan
DURHAM - Mary J. passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, September 29, 2013, surrounded by friends. She was born in Mebane on September 1, 1914.
She was the daughter of Luther Steven Straughan and Katie James Straughan (deceased). She had one sister, Jeter Burton Holt (deceased). She is survived by numerous cousins, including Suzanne Dail (Joey) of Mebane; Teena Petree (Charlie) of Plano, TX; Jeter James of New Braunfels, TX. Her extended families: Barbara and Lee Mitchell of Durham; Sue and Fulton Paris of Burlington. Her special friends were Dianne Wallen, Linda Moore, Renne Little and Sheila Baker.
Mary J. worked in retail sales and as a buyer for Ellis Stone, Belks, and Jones and Frazier's in Durham.
She was the oldest member of First Baptist Church of Durham and was a member of the Loyalty and Friendship class of the Senior Adult Sunday School Dept. and the Judy Hill Mission Group.
Mary J. enjoyed sitting on her porch surrounded by her flowers and birds. She loved her church, her friends, and playing cards with her canasta group. She lived a full life of 99 years.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 2 from Oakwood Cemetery in Mebane, NC. The Rev. Andy Winn will officiate.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m. today, October 1 at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.

Carl Eugene Best II

MEBANE — Mr. Carl Eugene Best II, 37, of 1515 Mill Creek Road, died on Saturday, September 28, 2013.
Mr. Best was born in Durham. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America and was an avid fan of WWE fan. He was preceded in death by his father, Carl Eugene Best Sr.
He is survived by his mother, Barbara Roth Best; two brothers, Steve Allen, Ray Allen; one sister, Valerie Best; nephews, Alexander Allen and Steven Allen Jr.; and niece, Elizabeth Best.

Marie Carver White

ROXBORO — Marie Carver White, 78 of 701 Semora Road, died suddenly Sunday, September 29, 2013 at Duke University Medical Center surrounded by her family. Born in Person County, she was the daughter of the late Guy Clifton and Rosa Tuck Carver. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Guy Carver, James Carver, and Holmes Carver; and one sister, Gloria Davis. Mrs. White retired from Peoples Bank and was a charter member of Westwood Baptist Church where she had served as clerk, treasurer, Sunday School teacher, choir member and youth director. 
Mrs. White is survived by her husband, Marvin White; one son, Gary White and wife, Carol of Roxboro; one daughter, Elaine White of Timberlake; one brother, G.C. Carver of Timberlake; one sister, Linda C. Hanson of Panama City, FL; two granddaughters, Janet White and Allison White.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 2, 2013, at the Brooks & White Chapel by the Rev. Gerald Hodges, the Rev. Jonathan Taylor and the Dr. M. David Chambers. Burial will follow in Person Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation will be held 6 to 7:30 p.m. today at the Brooks & White Funeral Home.

FRANKLINTON — Mr. Clearance Julius “Duwon” Bass, 51, of 3683 Bruce Garner Road, died on Sunday, September 29, 2013, at his home.
Mr. Bass was born in Durham and was a Carpenter. He was preceded in death by his mother, Sallie Currie Bass Overby; and father, Edward James Bass.
He is survived by his wife, Rita Aileen Hicks Bass; step-father, James Vernon Overby Sr.; stepsons, Larry Evans, Isaac Evans, Chris Hicks, David Hicks and Tommy Hicks; daughter, Krystle Starr Bass; brothers, Jimmy Bass, Robert Bass, James Vernon Overby Jr. and Todd Wayne Overby; sister, Heather Overby Bryant; and four grandchildren.
