David William Blue
DURHAM — Early Thursday, June 12th, 2014, God saw the road was getting rough, and the hills were hard to climb. So the angel of death peacefully and quietly came and took our loved one David W. Blue at the Hock Family Pavilion.
He leaves behind his mother, Gloria Smith-Blue; 2 uncles, Howard "Red" Smith and John Henry Smith; other relatives and friends.
His memorial service will be held Saturday, June 21st, 2014 at 3:00 p.m. The family visitation will be held 30 minutes prior to service.
In lieu of flowers make contribution to the White Rock Baptist Church Scholarship Fund in memory of David William Blue.

Margaret B. Burton
DURHAM — Margaret B. Burton, 90, departed her life on June 16, 2014.
She leaves behind her daughter, Theresa Burton Richmond (Darryl), and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Mrs. Burton’s only living brother, Eddie Harris, also passed away on June 16th.
Funeral services will be held for both at 1:00 pm on Friday at New Red Mountain Missionary Baptist Church with visitation at 12:00 noon.

Linda Rose Dennis
BAHAMA — Linda Rose Dennis, age 67, a resident of Bahama, NC and the wife of the late William Burl Dennis, died Tuesday June 17, 2014 at Vidant Inpatient Hospice of Greenville, NC.
A memorial service will be held 2 pm, Monday, June 23, 2014 at Union Grove United Methodist Church of Bahama.

Eddie Louis Harris
DURHAM — Mr. Eddie Louis Harris, 86, departed his life on June 16, 2014.
He leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, relatives and friends. Mr. Harris’ only living sister, Margaret Burton, also passed away on June 16th.

Jessie L. McClain
DURHAM — Jessie L. McClain, age 73, passed at Duke Regional Hospital on Sunday, June 15, 2014. She was born in Badin, NC to Westley and Lanie Bailey McPhail.
Surviving are sons Russell (Tanya), Booker T. Jr. (Delores) and Bernard (Helaine) McClain; daughters Sylvia McClain and Marion Piper; brothers Paul (Johnnie) and Willie McPhail; sisters Zerline Turner, Eula M. Lewis, Mae Frances McPhail, Vera Mitchell; and brother-in-law Levell (Martha) McClain.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12 noon, Friday, June 20, 2014 at Mt. Level Baptist Church, 316 Hebron Road Durham, NC 27704. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. til 12 noon prior to the service. Interment will follow in the Beechwood Cemetery. Shirley Ann Brown Merritt
DURHAM — Shirley Ann Brown Merritt, 82, passed away Monday, June 16, 2014 at her home. She was born in Durham County to the late Connie Mack Brown and the late Annie Mae Crabtree. She was also preceded in death by her sons, William Alan Merritt, Connie Wayne Merritt; granddaughter, Rebecca Anne Merritt and a brother, David Leroy Brown.
Mrs. Merritt retired from the American Tobacco Company. She was a former Sunday school teacher and church historian at Guess Road Baptist Church. Shirley was a loving and devoted wife, caring mother and adoring grandmother. She was a provider, homemaker, hard worker, and had a thoughtful soul. Shirley always had a kind word and quick wit, fast to laugh and love.
Mrs. Merritt is survived by her loving husband of 65 years, William “Bill” Merritt; grandchildren, Michael and Dana Merritt of Coral Springs, FL, David and Abigail Merritt of Durham, Ashlyn Merritt of Graham, Phillip Murray of Graham; great-grandchildren, Joshua Merritt, Jacob Merritt, William Parker Merritt, William Matheson Merritt and brother, Carl and Joan Brown of Durham.
A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Thursday, at Guess Road Baptist Church with Rev. Daniel Tilley officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday at Clements Funeral Home in Durham.

Patricia King Moore
DURHAM — Mrs. Patricia King Moore went home to be with her Lord on Tuesday, June 17, 2014, after an extended battle with cancer. She was born in Durham, the daughter of James “Ed” King and the late Frances Stanton King. Mrs. Moore retired from General Telephone in 2002. She was a lifelong member of Liberty Baptist Church and attended regularly until her illness.
Mrs. Moore is survived by her husband of 48 years, William “Bill” Moore; daughter, Carla Moore (Tyler); her father, Ed King; two sisters, Donna K. Cribb (Paul) of Luray, VA, Pam K. Campbell; one brother, Jimmy King (Tena); and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, June 20, 2014 at Oak Grove Memorial Gardens with Pastor Dr. Scott Gray and Gary McCorkle.

John L. Saunders
DURHAM — John L. Saunders, born Nov. 16, 1937 in Durham, N.C. to the late James & Rosa M. Saunders, passed June 12. He attended Merrick Moore High School preceding his career in the military. Lewis was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Rosetta Saunders and Sarah McCloud. He is survived by two brothers, James and Joseph Saunders; sister, Christine Perry; and loving nieces, nephews and cousins. DURHAM — Samuel C. Sowell Jr., 79, departed this life Friday, June 13, at his home at 3016 Mossdale Ave. in Durham, NC. Samuel was born March 27, 1935, in Durham, NC, to Samuel and Mary (Daye) Sowell.

Linda Ray Teston
DURHAM — Mrs. Linda Ray Teston, 71, of 3116 Nantucket Ave., died unexpectedly on Tuesday, June 17, 2014.
Mrs. Teston was a native resident of Durham, the daughter of the late James T. Ray Sr. and Henrietta Hatfield Ray. She was formerly employed with Upton’s Department Store as a clerk. She loved gardening, shopping and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Lester Teston, Jr.; son, Michael D. Teston of Buffalo, NY; daughter, Michelle Hickman of Durham; six grandchildren, Brandon W. Hickman, Sean C. Conway, Heather Hickman, Cassandra Conway, Jessica T. Johnson and Michael B. Teston; great-grandson, Colton Johnson; four brothers, James T. Ray Jr. of Raleigh, Brad Ray of Hillsborough, Timothy Ray of Burgaw and Kenneth Ray of Durham; brother-in-law, Joseph Teston; sister-in law, Joyce Teston; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held on Friday at 2 p.m. at Hudson Funeral Chapel, officiated by Rev. Hugh O’Shields. Burial will be in Brier Creek Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Sean Conway, Tyler Johnson, Brandon Hickman, Michael Teston, Rick Hickman and Zack Moore. Honorary pallbearers will be Joseph Teston, Richard Ott and Bob Lee.

Carolyn Ingram Thornton
DURHAM — Mrs. Carolyn Ingram Thornton, daughter of the late Charles J. & Bernice H. Ingram, born on September 6, 1935 in Durham, NC, departed this life on June 14, 2014. She graduated Hillside High School in 1953 with honors. She earned an undergraduate degree in Psychology and Sociology from Bennett College for Women in Greensboro, NC in 1957. She received her master’s in Social Work from UNC Chapel Hill in 1968. She was the first black female probation officer in NC. She was Chief Psychiatric Social Worker at the Cooperative School for Pregnant Girls (1968-1971). She served as director of Social Work/Mental Health at Lincoln Community Health Center for 31 years from 1971 to 2002. While at Lincoln she wrote a grant and developed the Homeless Health Care Project, which continues to operate at the Urban Ministries in Durham. In 1978 she was appointed Durham’s first African American City Councilwoman. She was an active member of White Rock Baptist Church from age 13 until the decline of her health earlier this year. She joined Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in 1963, Durham Alumnae. Over the years, she assisted with numerous projects at the local and national levels. She served as President of the Durham Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. President of the Durham Chapter of the Links, Inc. Carolyn received many awards, accolades and honors during her lifetime. Many loving and dear memories will by cherished by her two sisters, Audrey Ingram Johnson and Dr. E. Lavonia Ingram Allison; one sister-in-law, Carolyn Thornton Walker; three children, Susan (Richard) Kane, Gail Monje’ Thornton, and Rick/ Ted (Kim) Thornton; three adoring grandsons, Richard Hillman & Preston Derek Thornton and Alan Thornton Kane. In addition, she is survived by a host of loving nieces and nephews, extended family and friends.
Family visitation will be held Saturday, June 21, from 6 to 8 p.m. at White Rock Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held Sunday, June 22, at 1 p.m. at White Rock Baptist Church.

Martha Day Watson
ROXBORO — Martha Day Watson, 85, of 1597 Red Oak Dr., Roxboro, died Wednesday, June 18, 2014. Born in Person County, she was the daughter of the late Chuck & Lonie Yarbrough Day and wife of the late Alfred Watson. Mrs. Watson was retired from Collins & Aikman, and was also a home healthcare giver. She was a member of Westwood Baptist Church.
Mrs. Watson is survived by her two children, Deborah Blalock, of Timberlake, and Barry Len Watson, of Roxboro; her half-sister, Betty Ankenman, of Newport News, VA; three grandchildren, Crystal Rose & Husband David, of Clarksville, VA, Tasha Blalock, of Creedmoor, NC, and Nick Bradshaw, of Bakersville, NC; and two great-grandchildren, Jacob & Olivia Rose, of Clarksville, VA.
Visitation will be held 6:30-8:00 PM Thursday, June 19, 2014 at Brooks & White Funeral Home. The family will receive friends other times at the home of the daughter, 275 Antioch Acres Dr., Timberlake, NC 27583.
Funeral service will be held 11:00 AM Friday, June 20, 2014, at Westwood Baptist Church, by the Rev. Gerald Hodges and the Rev. Jonathan Taylor.
Burial will follow in Person Memorial Cemetery.

Chlota Walters Mathews
SALISBURY — Mrs. Chlota Walters Mathews, 95, of Salisbury, NC passed away Monday, June 16, 2014 at the Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks in Salisbury.
Born September 26, 1918 in Slocum, TX, she was the daughter of the late Ella Denson Walters and Hilton Robert Walters, both educators.
Mrs. Mathews embraced her Texas heritage and was proud that her father served in the Texas legislature where he sponsored a bill which successfully provided for free textbooks for school children.
Chlota lived in Kingsport, TN from 1945 until moving to Salisbury where she enjoyed a career in real estate. She enjoyed golf, bridge, gardening, and college football.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Murray Mathews, and grandson, John O. Reynolds, III.
Those left to cherish her memory are daughters, Susan Mathews Spurrier (Wayne), Patsy Mathews Reynolds (Ozzie), and Kathy Mathews; grandchildren, Hilary Gray Spurrier and Chancellor Murray Reynolds; her cats, Leo, Flora, and baby cat Nora.
Memorial service will be held 2PM Friday, June 20, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church in Salisbury. Visitation will be held in Lewis Hall following the service. Burial will be held at a later date.
