Edward Allen Jr.
DURHAM — Edward Allen Jr., 81, departed his life on May 28, 2013.
He is survived by one sister and one brother; a loving grandfather; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
Services will be at Holloway Memorial Funeral Home, Saturday at 1 p.m. with visitation at noon.
Linnie R. Fletcher Jr.
DURHAM — Mr. Linnie R. Fletcher Jr., (Ben), 91, died Tuesday evening in Durham Regional Hospital. He was born in Durham, the son of the late Linnie R. Fletcher Sr. and Ola Elizabeth Oakley Fletcher. Mr. Fletcher was retired from Liggett & Meyers Tobacco Co. with 36 years of service. He was a member of Oak Grove Free Will Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife of 71 years, Mrs. Helen Holder Fletcher; two daughters, Shirley Fletcher Moore and Peggy Fletcher Sessoms both of Durham; three grandchildren, Shelia Moore Hall and husband, Michael; George Allen Moore Jr. and wife, Janet and Shelley Lyn Sessoms and fiancé, Clarke Limbert; and three great grandchildren, Will and Amber Hall and Allen Moore. His brother, Robert (Duck) Fletcher preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. on Friday at Clements Funeral Chapel by Rev. Billy Keith, graciously filling in for Rev. Eddie Dollar. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday evening.

Michael "Boss Hogg" Garrett
DURHAM - Mr. Michael "Boss Hogg" Garrett, 36, of 901 Chalk Level Rd., died Sunday, May 26, 2013 at Durham Regional Hospital. His service will be conducted at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 1 at Burthey Funeral Chapel, 1510 Fayetteville St. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 12-1 p.m. at the chapel one hour prior to the service.

Pauline Ferguson Rogers Goodwin
DURHAM - Mrs. Pauline Ferguson Rogers Goodwin passed away Memorial Day, May 27, 2013 at the age of 97. She was preceded in death by her first husband of 61 years, Emmett Winston Rogers; their son, Charles Winston Rogers; parents, Raleigh N. and Rosa H. Ferguson; four brothers, Walter, Elvin, Melvin and Woodrow Ferguson; and three sisters, Pearl DuBose, Clara Brown and Ruth Royster.
She is survived by her second husband, S. Jackson Goodwin; two grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two stepchildren, one step-grandchild, a sister, Naomi MacCaughelty; and numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
Polly lived her life in the Durham area. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church and sang in the choir for many years. She and Winston owned and operated Rogers Sheet Metal Co. She worked for many years at First Federal Savings and Loan. She remained active until recent years, working at Measurements, Inc. until well into her eighties.
Family will receive friends Sunday from 1 to 2 p.m. at Clements Funeral Home in Durham with a memorial service to follow at 2 p.m. at Clements Funeral Chapel.

DURHAM — Eric Franklin "E" Holloway, 43, departed this life suddenly on May 23, 2013 at Duke Medical Center.
He is survived by his father and mother, Franklin and Frances Holloway; a brother; a devoted aunt; four children; two stepchildren; and other relatives and friends. Funeral services will be Friday, May 31, 2013 at West Durham Baptist Church, Athens St. Wake at 11 a.m., services follows.

DURHAM - Funeral service for Lewis Christmas Locust will be held Friday at 1 p.m. at Mt. Calvary United Church of Christ, Rev. J.C. Cheek, officiating. Visitation will be from 12 noon to 1.
Locust was a graduate of Durham Public Schools, North Carolina Central University; US Army veteran; automotive sales representative for GM; veterans representative for ESC of NC. Survivors include; daughter, Christina L. Locust; grandson, Austin Lewis; close friend, Magdelene Lee.

Cleo J. Melvin
DURHAM - Cleo J. Melvin passed away on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at the Hock Pavilion.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas G. Melvin; three daughters, Harriett M. Alston, Rose M. Strong and Jacqueline Renay Melvin.
Surviving children, five sons, Thomas C., Garland, Samuel, Ronnie and Stephen Melvin; three daughters, Doris M. Lewis, Julia Melvin and Dardanella McMillan; 22 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2013 at the Scarborough & Hargett Memorial Chapel, 923-B Old Fayetteville Street. Saturday visitation from 1 to 2 p.m. Services will begin at 2 p.m.

Winnifred Allen Newnam
DURHAM — Winnifred Allen Newnam, passed from this Earth to be with her savior on May 18, 2013.
Mrs. Newnam was preceded in death by her husband, R.D. Newnam; her mother and father; her sister, Wilma; and her brother “Jack”, whom she adored.
Mrs. Newnam is survived by her three sons, Ray III of Oxford, NC, Daniel and John, of Durham, NC; six grandchildren, Jessica, Elizabeth, Chris, Ben, Victoria, and Alexis; daughters-in-law, Rexanne and Tommy; and her canine companion, Oscar.
A memorial service will be held Friday, May 31, at 11 a.m. in the Howerton & Bryan Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations be made to the Fishewr Center for Alzheimers Research Foundation, 199 Water Street, 23rd Floor, New York, NY 10038.

Jo Ann Austin Wilson
HILLSBOROUGH - Mrs. Jo Ann Austin Wilson, 79, passed away peacefully May 28, 2013 at Duke Hospice at the Meadowlands in Hillsborough. She was born November 29, 1933 to Curtis Raymond and Annie Lou Austin. Jo Ann retired from the American Tobacco Company after 32 years. She was a devoted member of the Palmer’s Grove Methodist Church and an avid Blue Devils fan. She will be remembered for her cheerfulness, beautiful smile, and her love of all children. Jo Ann, with her ever-generous spirit, has left her final remains to the Duke Medical School.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 37 years, Donald Wilson of Hillsborough; children, James Wilson (Kristen) of Sycamore, IL, Mike Wilson of Seattle, WA, Kim Austin of Cedar Grove, Scott Wilson (Brenda) of Battleground, WA, and Kelly Pollock (Ricky) of Efland; grandchildren, Bryce Shuman (Jen) of Brooklyn, NY, Brook Price (Adam) of Durham, Jennifer Wilson of Miami, FL, Leah Wilson of Luray, VA, Ian Wilson of Kalkaska, MI, Kyle Wilson of Battleground, WA, and Rebecca Wells of Efland; and one great grandson, Brandon Mowbray of Durham. She is survived by her brothers, Curtis Austin (Nell) of Hurdle Mills, John Austin (Mabel) of Hillsborough, Norman Austin (Mary Ann) of Kernersville, and Frank Austin (Helen) of Durham, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents and a son, Glenn Wilson.
The family is grateful for the compassionate care provided by hospice and supportive family and friends. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, June 2nd, at 2 p.m. at the Palmer’s Grove Methodist Church in Hillsborough. CHAPEL HILL - Claudia Rankin (88), beloved wife, mother, sister and friend, passed Thursday, May 23, 2013 at the Laurels of Chatham after a long struggle with Dementia. She is survived by six children, three grandchildren, a sister and uncle. Family will receive friends at 315 Brooks Street (Sunday-Thursday) 2-5 p.m.

Marian Wilson Turner
CHAPEL HILL — Marian Wilson Turner died, the evening of May 27, 2013 at the Dubose Assisted Living Center on the campus of the Cedars Retirement Community in Chapel Hill of natural causes. Mrs. Turner was born on September 3, 1919 in Normal, Alabama on the campus of A&M University, the daughter of Exeline Polk Wilson and James H. Wilson, first African-American treasurer of A&M University and a well known cornetist who played with W.C. Handy and the great bands of the early twentieth century. She graduated from Virginia State College with a degree in Business Administration. She married John Brister Turner, UNC Dean of Social Work, in 1948. Dr. Turner passed away in 2009. Mrs. Turner was a much recognized administrative and business manager par excellence, having worked at Atlanta University, Dornback Company in Cleveland, the American Business Institute in Cairo, Egypt and leading up to her retirement, Duke University. She was also a noted enamellist on copper. She was also a champion tennis player and dearly loved jazz music. Mrs. Turner was active and a board member of several organizations.
She leaves two children, Marian Turner Hopkins and Charles Turner; grandchild, Ian Hopkins; son-in-law, Jonathan Hopkins; sisters-in-law, Mrs. Peggye Dowell and Mrs. Ann Wilson; and several nephews and nieces.

Dorothy Marie Bullock Bass
TIMBERLAKE — Dorothy Marie Bullock Bass, age 73, of 55 Willie Mae Lane, Timberlake, NC, died Wednesday morning May 29, 2013 at the Hock Family Pavilion.
Mrs. Bass was a native of Durham County, NC, daughter of the late Norman Branch and Mamie Gertrude Tilley Bullock and wife of 53 years to Randolph Forsyth Bass who survives. She was retired from IBM and was of the Baptist faith.
Surviving in addition to her husband are a daughter, Lisa Ward and husband, Allen, of Rougemont, NC; a son, Chris Bass and companion, Kimberly Mullenex, of Wake Forest, NC; sister, Louise Hines of Henderson, NC; three grandchildren, Josh Bass and wife, Ashley, Kaitlyn Bass, Devan Ward; and a great grandson, Mason Bass.
Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday, May 31, 2013 in the Maplewood Cemetery by the Rev. David Chambers. The family will receive friends Thursday, May 30, 2013 from 6 till 8 p.m. at Strickland Funeral Home and other times at the home.
Pallbearers will be Bobby Bass, Chris Bass, Josh Bass, Ken Bass, Allen Ward and Devan Ward. John Bass Jr. and Mason Bass will serve as honorary pallbearers.
