Douglas Ray Knight Sr.

DURHAM - Douglas Ray Knight Sr., age 79, a resident of 1315 Doc Nichols Road, died Saturday afternoon at his home.
Born March 12, 1934, in Harnett County, Douglas was the son of the late Otho and Lecta Goodwin Knight. He had been a resident of Durham for about 65 years and was a veteran of the Korean War, where he served in the U.S. Navy. Douglas was employed as an electrical contractor for the city of Durham, before establishing Knight Electrical Company in 1972, which he owned and operated until 1988. He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church.
Helping people in any way he could was a very important part of his life. He did this not for the praise and recognition it would bring him but because he genuinely cared about the well-being of others.
Surviving are his wife of 57 years, Evelyn Loyd Knight; three daughters, Vickie Knight Eason and Darla Knight Olson and husband, Fred, both of Durham and Mitzi Knight McLaurin and husband, Thad, of Greensboro; his son, Douglas Ray Knight Jr. of Wilkesboro; his sister, Betty Knight Delceg of Durham; six grandchildren, Michael Douglas Stanton, Melissa Lauren Stanton, Troy Daniel Eason, Duncan Knight McLaurin, Rayna Claire McLaurin and Ellery Lane McLaurin; and one-great-grandchild, Cameron Michael Thompson.
A memorial service will be held today at 11 a.m. in Calvary United Methodist Church, Rev. Jen Anderson officiating. A reception will be held in the church fellowship hall following the memorial service.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to Calvary United Methodist Church, 304 East Trinity Avenue, Durham, North Carolina 27703, or the Urban Ministries of Durham, 412 Liberty Street, Durham, North Carolina 27703.

Harrell Ross Perry
DURHAM — Mr. Harrell Ross Perry, 80, passed away Monday, May 20, 2013, at Brookshire Nursing Center. He was born in Durham County to the late Frank Bertis Perry and Mary Frances High Perry. He served in the U.S. Army, then worked at American Tobacco Company as a machine adjustor before he retired.
Mr. Perry is survived by his wife, Norma Jean Perry; daughter, Andrea Wallace (Anthony); sons, Joel Perry (Karen), Martin Perry (Kim); grandchildren, Beth Boycher (Ken), Brad Perry, Becky Parker (Jimmy), Amanda Perry, Beverly Wallace; great-grandchildren, Alana Boycher and Hayleigh Parker.
A funeral service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at Shady Grove Free Will Baptist Church. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Family will receive friends Wednesday, from 6 to 8 p.m., at Clements Funeral Home in Durham.

Cpl. David Michael Sonka, USMC

DURHAM — Corporal David Michael Sonka, United States Marine Corps, 23, of Parker, CO was killed May 4th, 2013 in Farah Province, Afghanistan when a soldier from the Afghan Army working with US Forces turned his weapon on the US Marines. These attacks are known as "insider attacks" and account for over 60 US deaths during Operation Enduring Freedom.
David joined the Marines following his high school graduation in 2008. His first deployment to Afghanistan was in 2011. Among many decorations he received were the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Afghanistan Campaign Medal and Purple Heart. David was a multi-purpose canine handler whose dog, Flex, was also killed.
David is survived by his mother, Donna Francis Beine of Parker, CO and formerly of Durham, NC; wife, Torey; and brother, Matthew, both of Parker; grandmother, Nancy Jones Francis of Cary; and uncle, Dennis Francis of Raleigh. David was predeceased by his grandfather, Linwood Francis.
A full military funeral was held in Colorado on May 16, 2013 with interment at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver.

Jerry Arnold Yeatts
DURHAM — Jerry Arnold Yeatts born August 28, 1933, he passed away on Sunday, May 19, 2013. Mr. Yeatts was a graduate of Durham High School and was a Veteran of the Korean War. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Ruby Yeatts.
He is survived by four children, Jason, Sheila, Sky and Dallas Yeatts; one grandchild, Julianna Yeatts; and his daughter-in-law, Christi Yeatts.
