John Francis Hanley
DURHAM — John “Jack" or "Poppa Jack” Hanley, 88, peacefully passed away on July 2, 2014 with his daughters, Karen and Joan, by his side. A special thank you to the Durham VA Medical Center Hospice Unit for their loving care and support.
Jack was born on January 13, 1926 in Philadelphia, Pa. and spent the last six years of his life in Durham, NC. Jack was a proud U.S. Army veteran, serving in both World War II and the Korean War. His civilian career in Sales excelled through his integrity, enthusiasm, and love of people. Jack had a passion for life, always wore a smile, and had kind words for everyone. He enjoyed music, dancing, reading, yoga, and had a daring sense of adventure displayed when he went skydiving at age 70.
Poppa Jack is survived by his beloved daughters, Joan Hanley and Karen Menna; son-in-law, Ron; two granddaughters, Jamie Menna Sanders and Lori Menna; four great-grandchildren, Max, Oliver, Claudia, and Milo; as well as many other extended family and friends.
Funeral service will be held on Wednesday, July 9th, at 11 A.M. at the Griffith Funeral Chapel, 520 Chester Pike, Norwood, PA 19074. Visitation will be on Wednesday from 10 A.M. to 11 A.M. at the funeral home. Burial will be private with full military honors at Washington Crossing National Cemetery in Newtown, Pa.
Memorial donations made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 would be appreciated.

Charles J. Horton
DURHAM — Mr. Charles J. Horton, 81, passed on July 3, 2014. He was preceded in death by his son, Charles E. Horton, Jr.
Survivors include his loving wife, Dorothy M. Horton; sons, Robert, Stanley, Morris and Stephen Horton; daughters, Deborah Conrad, Stephanie (Wayne) Hewlett, Rita, Latoya and Jessica Robertson; and brothers, Walter and William Brown.
Services will takes place on Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at 1 p.m. at Immanuel Temple Seventh Day Adventist Church, 2102 S. Alston Ave., Durham, NC. Evelyn Sleightholm Saunders
DURHAM — Evelyn Sleightholm Saunders, age 99, died July 3, 2014 in Durham, North Carolina. Evelyn was born October 3, 1914, the youngest of three children of Harry and Amy Sleightholm of Turtle Creek, PA. She graduated from Allegheny College, and then moved to Durham, NC to pursue a graduate degree at Duke University. While at Duke, she met her future husband, Max Saunders; they married and moved to Chapel Hill. They lived there for over thirty years, raised two daughters, and retired to Myrtle Beach to enjoy the many golf courses. Evelyn worked first at Eubanks Drug Store on Franklin Street, then at the UNC Purchasing Department, and finally at the UNC Alumni Office.
Evelyn was predeceased by her parents, her brother and sister, and her husband. She is survived by her daughters, Nancy Gabriel of Chapel Hill, NC and Betty Graybeal (Cris) of Charlotte, NC; five grandchildren: Katherine “Casey” Gabriel of Durham, NC, Sarah Graybeal Ruiz (Jose) of League City, TX, David Graybeal of Charlotte, NC, Brian Graybeal (Cindy) of Charlotte, NC, and Katherine “Katie” Graybeal Chalmers (Joel) of Auburn, WA; three great-grandchildren: Emma Ruiz of League City, TX, Daniel Barchi and Lucas Graybeal of Charlotte, NC.
Memorials in Evelyn's memory may be made to University United Methodist Church, 150 E. Franklin Street, Chapel Hill, NC 27514. In accordance with her wishes, no service is planned. Arrangements by Cremation Society of the Carolinas.


Margaret H. Williams
OXFORD — Margaret H. Williams, age 90, died Saturday, July 5, 2014 at Universal Health Care. She was a native of Granville County and was the daughter of the late Henry Abner and Tazzie Daniel Hart. She was the widow of the late Robert Pressley Williams. Mrs. Williams was a member of Mt. Creek Baptist Church.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, July 9, 2014 at 11:00 am in Gentry-Newell & Vaughan Chapel by the Rev. Johnny Richards, Rev. James C. Shelley, Jr. and Rev. Steve Brown. Burial will be in Mt. Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
Survivors include two sons, James R. Williams (Betsy) of Oxford and Gerald P. Williams (Jackie) of Durham; daughter-in-law, Robin B. Williams of Oxford; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Ronald D. Williams; daughter, Jeannette N. Williams; sister, Erma H. Coley. She was also preceded in death by half-brothers, Ervin Hart and Jim Hart, and half-sisters, Jewel Hart, Ruby H. Currin, Janie H. Currin, Pearl H. Frazier, and Lelia H. Pittard.

Roosevelt "Jackie Boy" Williams Sr.
APEX — Funeral services for Roosevelt "Jackie Boy" Williams Sr. will be held Wednesday, July 9, at 12 noon at New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, 581 New Hope Church Rd., Apex, NC. The family visitation will be held one hour prior to service.
